The weekend runs from Friday practice through Saturday qualifying and Sprint to Sunday warm-up and the main race; exact start times vary by event.
The 2026 weekend at a glance
MotoGP’s standard 2026 premier-class weekend is spread across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The sessions have distinct jobs: practice provides track time and determines the first qualifying group, qualifying establishes the starting positions, and the two races provide separate chances to score points. Sunday’s Grand Prix is the full-length race; Saturday’s Sprint is shorter.

The table shows the usual order and durations for the premier class. Event timetables give the local clock times, and a full Grand Prix schedule also includes sessions and races for the other championship classes, as well as any additional activities listed for that round.
| Day | Session | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | Free Practice 1 (FP1) | 45 minutes | Initial running and setup work. |
| Friday | Practice | 60 minutes | The timed session that determines the ten riders who advance directly to Q2. |
| Saturday | Free Practice 2 (FP2) | 30 minutes | Further running before qualifying. |
| Saturday | Qualifying 1 (Q1) | 15 minutes | Riders outside Friday Practice’s top ten compete for the two remaining places in Q2. |
| Saturday | Qualifying 2 (Q2) | 15 minutes | The ten direct qualifiers and two Q1 transfers contest the top 12 grid positions. |
| Saturday | MotoGP Sprint | Shorter than the Grand Prix; a specific duration is not stated in the cited official format explanations. | A separate, points-scoring race using the qualifying grid. |
| Sunday | Warm-up | 10 minutes | A final short preparation session. |
| Sunday | MotoGP Grand Prix | Full-length race; a specific duration is not stated in the cited official format explanations. | The main race of the weekend, starting from the qualifying grid. |
For a first-time viewer, the most useful distinction is between the session called “Practice” and the broader idea of practice. FP1 and FP2 are free-practice sessions, while Friday’s 60-minute Practice is the session whose top ten determine direct Q2 entry. The day and session name matter: the direct-Q2 cutoff is not set by FP1 or Saturday FP2.

What happens during Friday practice?
FP1 starts the weekend’s on-track work
Friday begins with Free Practice 1, a 45-minute session for initial running and setup work. It is followed by the longer, 60-minute session simply called Practice. For the 2026 format, that second Friday session has a direct qualifying consequence: its top ten riders go straight to Q2 the next day.
That makes Friday Practice more than a preliminary run. A rider who finishes in the top ten has secured a direct route into the session that decides the first 12 places on the grid. Riders outside that group still have a route to Q2, but must earn one of its two available transfer places in Q1.
Practice and qualifying are not the same thing
The Friday Practice session sorts riders into the Saturday qualifying groups; it does not itself decide the starting grid. That is the job of Q1 and Q2. A useful way to keep the sequence straight is: Friday Practice identifies ten direct Q2 qualifiers, Q1 selects two more, and Q2 ranks the first 12 grid positions.
In other words, a strong Friday result is valuable because it avoids the Q1 route, not because it directly awards a front-row or other grid position. Even the top ten from Friday must take part in Q2 to establish their actual places among the first 12. Friday establishes access to the next stage; qualifying sets the grid.
How Q1 and Q2 decide the starting grid
Q1: two places remain
Saturday’s 15-minute Q1 is for riders who did not finish Friday Practice in the top ten. The two fastest Q1 riders advance to Q2 and join the ten riders who qualified directly. Everyone else remains outside Q2.
That makes Q1 a gateway rather than a second chance for every rider to reset the Friday order. There are 12 places in Q2 in total: ten already secured from Friday Practice and two won in Q1. A rider who does not transfer still has a grid position, placed behind the Q2 qualifiers according to Q1 performance.
Q2: the first 12 positions are set
Q2 is another 15-minute session. Its 12 participants—the ten direct qualifiers and the two Q1 transfers—contest the top 12 places on the starting grid. Riders who remain in Q1 are placed behind those Q2 qualifiers according to their Q1 performance.

So the route is not an elimination bracket in which a rider must complete both sessions: the Friday top ten skip Q1, while the remaining riders have to pass through it for a chance to join Q2. Q2 then determines the order among its 12 participants; Q1 performance establishes the positions for those who do not make the transfer.
When looking at a qualifying summary, keep the two stages together. Q2 supplies the ordering for positions one through 12, while Q1 is relevant both for deciding who earns the last two Q2 places and for placing riders who do not advance behind the Q2 group. This is why a rider’s Friday Practice rank alone is not the same as their eventual qualifying position.
Why qualifying matters for both Saturday and Sunday
In the 2026 format, the Q1 and Q2 sequence sets the starting grid for both the Saturday Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. There is one qualifying process for the two MotoGP races. The Sprint is a separate race, but its finishing order does not reset or determine the Grand Prix grid.
This distinction matters when following the weekend: a rider’s result in the Sprint can affect the points earned on Saturday, but not the rider’s starting position for Sunday. To know where a rider will line up for the Grand Prix, look to Saturday qualifying—not the Sprint result.

First comes qualifying, which establishes starting positions for both races. Later comes the Sprint, which has its own finishing result and points-scoring opportunity. The Sprint does not function as a qualifying heat for Sunday, and a rider’s Sunday grid place is not recalculated from the Sprint finish.
What the Sprint adds to the weekend
The MotoGP Sprint is a shorter, points-scoring race held on Saturday afternoon. It gives the premier class a second race during the weekend, alongside Sunday’s full-length Grand Prix. Its grid comes from qualifying, just as the Grand Prix grid does under the 2026 rules.
Keep the two outcomes separate when reading results or a schedule: qualifying determines starting positions, while the Sprint is a race in its own right. Its result contributes a Saturday points opportunity, but does not set Sunday’s starting order. The 2026 format explanations identify the Sprint as shorter than the Grand Prix but do not establish a single duration here; check the event’s official information for the relevant race details.

The Sprint is therefore neither a practice session nor a shortened qualifying session. It is a separate race on the Saturday program. Its shorter format gives fans another premier-class contest before Sunday, while the established qualifying grid remains the reference for where riders start both races in 2026.

Sunday begins with a 10-minute warm-up, a short final preparation session before the MotoGP Grand Prix. The Grand Prix is the weekend’s full-length premier-class race and uses the grid already established by Saturday’s qualifying. The Sprint has no role in reshuffling that starting order.
Other championship classes may also have their own sessions and races over the event weekend. The premier-class sequence is therefore only one part of the full circuit timetable, not a complete schedule of everything happening at the event.
For the MotoGP class, the warm-up is the last scheduled preparation before the main race, not another qualifying stage. If you are tracking the Grand Prix grid, carry forward Saturday’s qualifying order; the warm-up and Sprint result do not replace it in the 2026 format described here.
How to follow the weekend without mixing up the sessions
- On Friday: note the top ten from the 60-minute Practice session. They advance directly to Saturday’s Q2.
- On Saturday before the races: Q1 gives two riders a route into Q2; Q2 ranks the top 12 grid places. Riders who stay in Q1 are placed behind them based on Q1 performance.
- For the Sprint: use the qualifying grid to understand the starting order, then treat the finishing result as the result of a separate Saturday race.
- For Sunday’s Grand Prix: use the same qualifying grid from Saturday. Do not use the Sprint finishing order as a substitute.
This sequence also helps make sense of a rider’s weekend progress. A strong Friday Practice can remove the need to race in Q1; a Q1 transfer earns a place in the session for the top 12; and qualifying position carries through to both 2026 MotoGP races.
A quick way to read a weekend report is to ask three separate questions: who made the top ten in Friday Practice, which two riders transferred from Q1, and how did the 12 Q2 participants rank? Then check the Sprint and Grand Prix results as race outcomes, not as further qualifying steps. Keeping those questions separate avoids confusing a practice ranking, a starting grid and a race finish.
Why 2027 changes the explanation
MotoGP announced a different weekend format for 2027 on 7 October 2026. It introduces separate qualifying processes for the Sprint and Grand Prix, so the 2026 rule that one qualifying sequence sets both grids will no longer apply.

Friday: a new Sprint qualifying session
The announced 2027 plan adds a 15-minute Sprint qualifying session on Friday. It will set the starting grid for the Sprint, separating that race’s qualifying from the process for the Grand Prix.
Saturday: separate Grand Prix qualifying and a new FP3
Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying will be a distinct process. All riders will take part in Q1, and the top 12 will advance to Q2. The plan also adds a 20-minute FP3 on Saturday. These are announced format details for 2027, not the 2026 sequence described above.
When checking a schedule or explaining a race weekend, use the season as your reference point. The Saturday qualifying grid applies to both races in 2026; under the announced 2027 format, the Sprint and Grand Prix will have separate qualifying procedures and grids.
One practical consequence is that a summary written for 2026 should not be carried over unchanged into 2027. In 2026, Friday Practice feeds the shared Q1/Q2 process, and that qualifying order covers both races. In the announced 2027 arrangement, Friday’s Sprint qualifying sets the Sprint grid, while Saturday’s separate Q1/Q2 route establishes the Grand Prix grid. The new Saturday FP3 is also a session to look for in that format.

The session order and durations above describe the standard 2026 premier-class format, not a universal set of clock times. Start times are local to the event, and each round publishes its own timetable. For example, MotoGP’s official 2026 Thai GP timetable lists the sessions and races class by class.
For a particular Grand Prix, consult that event’s official schedule rather than assuming that a session starts at the same time as it did at another round. The schedule is also the place to check the full program across MotoGP and the other championship classes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a MotoGP race weekend work in 2026?
The premier-class weekend starts with FP1 and Friday Practice, continues on Saturday with FP2, Q1, Q2 and the Sprint, then finishes on Sunday with warm-up and the Grand Prix. Friday Practice determines the ten direct Q2 qualifiers; qualifying sets the grids for both races.
How many riders go directly to Q2, and how many transfer from Q1?
The ten fastest riders in Friday’s 60-minute Practice go directly to Q2. The other riders compete in Q1, where the two fastest advance to join them in Q2.
Does the MotoGP Sprint decide the Sunday Grand Prix grid?
No. Under the 2026 format, Saturday’s Q1 and Q2 set the starting grid for both the Sprint and the Sunday Grand Prix. The Sprint is a separate points-scoring race, and its finishing order does not change Sunday’s grid.
What changes in MotoGP qualifying in 2027?
MotoGP announced on 7 October 2026 that Friday will include a 15-minute Sprint qualifying session to set the Sprint grid. Saturday will have separate Grand Prix qualifying, with all riders in Q1 and the top 12 advancing to Q2, plus a new 20-minute FP3.
Are MotoGP session start times the same at every Grand Prix?
No. Session order and standard durations describe the premier-class format, but start times are local and each event publishes its own timetable. Check the official schedule for the specific round and season.
The Bottom Line
For 2026, remember the sequence: Friday Practice sends ten riders straight to Q2, Q1 supplies two more, and Q2 sets the starting grid for both Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. The Sprint does not alter Sunday’s order. MotoGP’s announced 2027 format separates the two qualifying processes, so check the season-specific event timetable.
