What “switching” means on a hybrid backhoe
There is no single switching sequence shared by every hybrid backhoe. The term describes a machine that combines an engine and electric components, but manufacturers can arrange and control those components differently. A diesel engine may supply power to electrical components, a battery may supply electric drive, and some modes may combine diesel and electric output. The control strategy depends on the model.

Once the engine runs, the machine is no longer operating solely on battery power. That distinction is useful when considering work near people or indoors, but “battery-only” does not by itself establish a job’s total emissions, noise level, or suitability for a particular site.

How HUDDIG describes the 1370T TIGON powertrain
HUDDIG calls TIGON a plug-in hybrid system. Its 1370T information describes a diesel engine and distribution gearbox working alongside three electric motor-generators. The motor-generators charge the battery; the battery, in turn, drives four electric wheel motors. HUDDIG also describes those wheel motors as regenerative, meaning they can return energy to the battery during suitable operating conditions. The manufacturer says the engine starts automatically when the battery needs charging.
This is the broad energy path the manufacturer publishes—not a complete control diagram. It explains how diesel and stored electrical energy are both part of the system, but it does not reveal the exact point at which the engine starts, how much charge is reserved, which actions or loads trigger an engine start, or how the operator can override or change that behavior. HUDDIG’s 1370T product information is the relevant model-specific reference.

The mode names indicate that the operator has named operating choices, but the labels alone are not enough to infer a detailed operating procedure. For example, it would be misleading to claim that ECO always prioritizes battery use, or that PWR necessarily starts the engine at a particular battery percentage: those specifics are not published in the cited material.

What happens when the battery needs charging
HUDDIG says the engine starts automatically when the battery needs charging. That is the documented part of the transition from electric operation toward diesel-assisted operation. The source does not give a state-of-charge percentage, a workload threshold, or a timer. It also does not say whether the machine always starts the engine at the same threshold or whether that point varies with operating conditions.
It is therefore more accurate to understand the system as having an automatic charging function than to picture a fixed rule such as “the engine starts at 20%.” The battery can support electric drive, and the engine can run to recharge it; the manufacturer has not published enough control detail to map the exact sequence for every task or mode. The driver should follow the machine’s own operating instructions and display prompts for the particular model and generation rather than rely on a generic hybrid description.
Regenerative wheel motors are another part of the energy picture, but their presence does not mean the battery will always gain charge while working. The available product information identifies regenerative capability; it does not quantify recovered energy or promise that regeneration can replace charging by the engine or an external supply.

Runtime, battery capacity and model generation
HUDDIG’s current 1370T product information states up to two hours of operation on battery power alone. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result or a guaranteed shift length. The published figure does not specify a standard work cycle, load, temperature, operator behavior, or other conditions, so it should not be read as a promise that every 1370T will run for two hours on every job.
Battery figures also need to be tied to generation. In a September 2026 announcement, HUDDIG said the TIGON G2 battery capacity increased from 44 kWh to 61 kWh. Those figures identify the earlier and newer generations discussed in that announcement; they should not be blended into a single specification for every 1370T TIGON. A larger stated battery capacity does not, by itself, establish a particular increase in operating time. Runtime also depends on how a machine is used, and the cited announcement does not provide a directly comparable controlled runtime test. When comparing a specific machine with a published figure, confirm its generation and ask the dealer which operating conditions the estimate assumes.

Hybrid TIGON versus a fully electric backhoe
A fully electric backhoe is a useful contrast, but it is not another example of hybrid switching. CASE describes its 580EV as an electric backhoe loader with a 72.7 kWh battery. That model’s product information is specific to the 580EV; it should not be used as a battery specification for HUDDIG or as evidence about a hybrid powertrain. CASE’s 580EV product information identifies it as the electric comparison.

The distinction matters when a reader asks whether a machine can work without diesel operation. A hybrid’s battery-only mode can provide periods without the diesel engine running, but the machine also has an engine and a documented automatic charging function. A fully electric machine is a different powertrain category. Neither the battery capacity alone nor a mode name determines how long a machine can perform a particular job.
What the fleet figures do—and do not—show
HUDDIG’s September 2026 TIGON G2 announcement reports that its fleet operated on electricity for 56.68% of operating time and estimates 531,621 liters of diesel saved. These are company-reported aggregate fleet figures, not an independent test and not a universal efficiency rate for a single machine. The announcement’s figures describe reported fleet experience; they do not predict an individual machine’s electric share or fuel savings on a different site, duty cycle, or generation.

The distinction between a fleet statistic and an individual job estimate is important. A reported electric share can reflect the mix of tasks and operating conditions across the fleet. Without details making that fleet comparable to a reader’s job, the percentages and estimated savings should not be used as a guaranteed return, runtime estimate, or expected reduction for a particular purchase.
What to verify for a specific machine
Because the published sources do not provide a precise switching threshold or complete mode procedure, someone evaluating or operating a particular TIGON should confirm the model-specific details directly in its current operating documentation and with the dealer or manufacturer. Useful questions include:
- Which TIGON generation is being discussed, and what battery capacity applies to that machine?
- What operating conditions underlie any quoted battery-only runtime, and is it an estimate or a measured result for that machine?
- How are EV, ECO and PWR selected on the machine’s controls, and what does the display show when the engine starts to recharge?
- Can the operator choose when the engine runs, or does the system manage that transition automatically under specified conditions?
- What charging arrangements and operating limits apply to the machine’s intended site?
These are verification questions, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s operating instructions. The available public product descriptions establish the broad operating concept but do not answer each control, charging, or job-planning detail.
Why manufacturers electrify backhoes
Backhoe work can involve changing demands rather than one constant high-load task. In a March 11, 2020 announcement about the fully electric CASE 580EV, CASE director of global compact equipment product line Eric Zieser argued that varied work cycles can create opportunities to replace diesel-engine running time with battery operation while retaining responsive power when needed. That is CASE’s rationale for electrifying backhoes; it is not a description of HUDDIG’s control logic or independent evidence about the performance of either machine.
The underlying operational idea helps explain why a hybrid can be useful: electric operation can cover some periods of work, while diesel power remains available as part of the hybrid system. But an explanation of that rationale should not be confused with a promise that a particular machine will spend a set share of its time in electric mode. The actual split depends on the machine and the work, and HUDDIG’s fleet statistic is not a forecast for an individual operator.
Bottom line
On the HUDDIG 1370T TIGON, battery power supports electric drive, HUDDIG says the engine starts automatically when the battery needs charging, and PWR mode is described as combining diesel and electric output.
