The letters alone do not tell you whether the figure was measured at an engine shaft or at the wheels, or whether the engine was tested with gross or net equipment. To compare two ratings, check the measurement location and test conditions—not an assumed percentage difference.
What do HP and BHP mean?
Horsepower (HP) names a unit of power. Brake horsepower (BHP, also written bhp) is a power rating obtained by measuring an engine with a brake dynamometer. So HP and BHP are not necessarily two different units or fixed, competing figures: one names the unit, while the other describes how power was measured.
ISO 2710-1:2026 defines brake power as the “sum of the powers measured at the driving shaft or shafts.” That definition makes the measurement point important: a BHP figure is meaningful only when you know which shaft or shafts were measured and under what test setup. ISO 2710-1:2026
Is BHP measured at the crankshaft or at the wheels?
It depends on the test. Engine power can be measured at the engine’s driving shaft, while wheel power is measured at the vehicle’s wheels on a chassis dynamometer. Those are different points in the power path, so their readings are not automatically comparable. The label “BHP” by itself does not establish that the measurement was taken at the wheels—or tell you the wheel output.

For any quoted figure, look for the dynamometer type and measurement location. An engine dynamometer can measure engine output at its shaft; a chassis dynamometer measures power delivered to the wheels. Do not convert between the two using a default drivetrain-loss percentage: no universal factor applies across vehicles and test setups.
Why can two engine horsepower ratings differ?
Besides the measurement point, ratings can differ because of what was fitted to the engine, how it was tested, and which convention or unit was used. ISO distinguishes indicated power developed in the working cylinders from brake power measured at driving shafts. It also distinguishes net and gross power according to the equipment and auxiliaries specified for the test. These labels are not interchangeable.

Gross versus net power
A gross rating and a net rating describe different test configurations, not two universal formulas for adjusting the same number. The equipment and auxiliaries included depend on the applicable measurement definition and procedure. SAE J1995 is a test code for gross engine power and torque ratings; its page describes a basis for dynamometer determination under reference conditions. SAE J1995
Test procedure, speed, and conditions
Engine speed matters because a power rating is tied to the conditions at which it was measured. Reference or ambient conditions and the named test standard can matter too. For example, SAE describes J1995 as a basis for testing gross power and torque under reference conditions. When comparing figures, check the stated standard and test conditions rather than assuming different published numbers were produced the same way.

Units and conventions
Some specifications use kilowatts (kW), mechanical horsepower (hp), or metric horsepower (PS). A source should identify which unit or convention it uses before you compare or convert figures. A USDA/NRCS California technical glossary gives the rounded relationships 1 hp = 0.7457 kW and 1 kW = 1.3410 hp, in a program-specific glossary citing ASAE D497.7. - Unit and convention: hp, kW, or PS, and which horsepower convention applies.
- Measurement location: engine driving shaft, transmission output, or vehicle wheels.
- Test configuration: gross or net, including the specified equipment and auxiliaries.
- Procedure and conditions: the named test standard, engine speed, and reference conditions where given.
- Rating context: whether the figure is manufacturer-declared or a measured test result, and the circumstances attached to it.
ISO defines declared power as power an engine delivers under a given set of circumstances. A figure without its circumstances may be difficult to compare even when both ratings are expressed in horsepower. ISO 2710-1:2026

No. Torque is twisting force; horsepower is power. A power rating must be read alongside engine speed and its test context. What to remember about HP, BHP, and WHP
- HP is a power unit.
- BHP describes brake-measured power; the test’s measurement point and configuration determine what the number represents.
- WHP refers to power measured at the wheels, a different location from an engine-shaft measurement.
There is no universal numerical gap between HP and BHP, and BHP is not a synonym for wheel horsepower. Compare the unit, measurement location, test setup, and conditions before drawing conclusions.
