It does not mechanically drive the wheels. Horse lists naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, with maximum power of up to 70 kW and 120 kW respectively, and states a 2027 availability target. The phrase “1.5-cylinder” is incorrect: 1.5 liters is the engine’s displacement, and it has four cylinders.
What the C15 does in an electric vehicle
The C15 is a range extender for a battery-electric vehicle (BEV), not a standalone engine accessory or a conventional hybrid powertrain that mechanically sends engine power to the wheels. The combustion engine turns an integrated generator, which provides electricity to replenish the vehicle’s battery; the electric drive remains responsible for traction.
Horse Powertrain describes the concept as “a kind of charger within the vehicle, providing a steady source of energy that can top up a vehicle’s battery.” That explanation appears in Horse’s X-Range C15 explainer, published June 9, 2026. Horse says the system is not connected to the drive shaft.
Horse’s published C15 specifications
The following figures and design details are vendor specifications in Horse Powertrain’s product brochure, not independent vehicle-test results.
#1 Best Overall
- This generator is used in the electric car driving process in the case of non-stop output DC electric energy to drive the electric car motor work, and control the engine running and off, so that the output voltage is stable in the standard range (using rectifier regulator), the remaining power to the battery to supplement the charge.
- This 3kW gasoline range extender directly provides DC power to your electric vehicle's motor while driving, significantly extending your range. It's the ultimate solution for long journeys or trips to areas without charging stations.
- This system seamlessly works with a wide range of electric vehicles (48V, 60V, and 72V systems). Its built-in intelligent voltage regulator ensures the output voltage remains within a safe standard range, preventing damage to the vehicle's battery pack from overvoltage or high-current charging.
- Easy Installation, Suitable for Multiple Vehicles This on-board charging solution is designed for electric sedans, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and utility vehicles. Large silencer exhaust pipe, low noise.
- Electric Start and Continuous Power Equipped with a convenient, enhanced electric start system, operation is quick and easy. The durable motor with pure copper coil ensures strong rotation of the drum and provides stable power output.

Horse presents the two induction options as configurations within the same compact integrated system. The brochure gives maximum output figures, but does not establish a vehicle’s fuel economy, additional driving range or emissions in real-world use. Its regulatory references are design targets; the consulted material does not establish completed homologation or independent validation.
Packaging and intended role
Horse says the C15 package incorporates cooling and exhaust equipment as well as the engine and generator. Horizontal or vertical installation and front- or rear-compartment placement are presented as options for automakers integrating the system into a BEV platform. Horse identifies passenger vehicles from B-segment through light commercial vehicles as target applications.

- Product Name: Strengthen the electric start Gasoline Engine Generator
- Voltage: 48-72V universal
- Power:3-8KW (Optional)
- Size: 350x330x350MM
- Weight:23KG
The product sits within Horse’s X-Range powertrain family, which the company describes as serving dedicated EV platforms with hybrid and range-extender options. Horse positions the C15 as a modular way for automakers to adapt BEV platforms. Its 2025 annual report discusses a modular, compact range-extender strategy for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, including integration flexibility, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) considerations, and certification needs.
What is—and is not—established about availability and performance
Horse’s brochure states 2027 availability. That is the company’s stated target, not evidence that the C15 is already on sale, has entered production, or is fitted to a production vehicle. The materials consulted do not report independent C15 vehicle testing or measurements of fuel consumption, emissions, or extra range.

Horse attributes claims about smooth electric driving, efficient engine operating speed, reduced fuel use and emissions to its range-extender concept. Without vehicle-level results, those claims should be read as the company’s design rationale rather than demonstrated C15 outcomes. A generator’s output specification alone cannot establish how far a particular vehicle will travel or how much fuel it will use; those results depend on the complete vehicle and its operating conditions.
Horse Powertrain’s context
Horse Powertrain was formed on May 31, 2024, as a 50/50 joint venture of Renault Group and Geely, according to Renault Group’s corporate announcement. The company’s 2024 annual report describes earlier range-extender activity, including supply for Chilean electric-bus maker Reborn Electric Motors and a partnership with Lecar. Those milestones show company activity in the category; they do not establish a C15 deployment.

What to compare when automakers assess the C15
The published information supports comparison of the C15’s configurations and packaging, not a ranking by vehicle range or fuel economy.
