It is the sixth-generation Honda Prelude, a two-door, four-seat hybrid coupe/liftback that Honda sells in the United States as a 2026 model. Honda began Japanese sales on September 5, 2025, and lists the U.S. Prelude at $42,000 before destination, taxes, registration, and other charges.
The Prelude is a real production car with confirmed specifications. What Honda has not confirmed is a new S2000, a next-generation NSX, a mid-engine sports car, or another named rear-wheel-drive performance coupe. Honda has said the Prelude is intended to serve as a “prelude” to future electrified specialty sports models, but that is a broader product-strategy statement—not an announcement of a specific second sports car.

What Honda’s upcoming sports car actually is
For the U.S. market, Honda’s upcoming sports car is the 2026 Honda Prelude. It is a specialty hybrid model built around a two-door coupe profile, four seats, a liftback-style rear opening, and front-wheel drive.
That combination matters because the Prelude is not a traditional high-powered sports car in the mold of a rear-wheel-drive coupe or roadster. Honda is positioning it as a sporty grand-tourer: a distinctive, relatively efficient specialty car that can still be used for commuting, road trips, and carrying everyday cargo.

Hybrid power, not S2000-style performance
The Prelude combines a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with Honda’s two-motor hybrid system. Honda rates total system output at 200 horsepower. The car is front-wheel drive and uses a direct-drive unit rather than a manual gearbox.

That specification gives the Prelude a very different character from the old S2000. The S2000 was a two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster with a manual transmission. The Prelude is a four-seat, front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe/liftback designed to combine driving engagement with much better everyday efficiency.
Honda’s official U.S. fuel-economy rating is 44 mpg combined, with 46 mpg city and 41 mpg highway. Those numbers are central to the car’s mission: it is closer to an efficient sporting grand-tourer than to a low-volume, high-output performance coupe.
What is Honda S+ Shift?
One of the Prelude’s most important technology features is Honda S+ Shift. It is designed to make the hybrid powertrain feel more like an engaging stepped-transmission sports car by coordinating simulated shift behavior with driver inputs and synthesized sound.
S+ Shift does not turn the Prelude into a manual-transmission car, and it does not change the fact that the vehicle uses Honda’s hybrid direct-drive system. Instead, it is an electronic and sound-management layer intended to give the driver a stronger sense of acceleration events and gear changes.
The U.S. Prelude also offers four drive modes:
- Comfort: intended for relaxed everyday driving.
- GT: intended for longer-distance or grand-touring use.
- Sport: intended to sharpen the car’s responses and emphasize its sporting character.
- Individual: allows the driver to customize selected settings.
Chassis hardware borrowed from Honda’s performance toolbox
Although the Prelude is not a Type R and Honda has not presented it as an S2000 replacement, its chassis specification is more serious than the power figure alone might suggest.
Honda says the car uses a Type R-derived chassis hardware package, adaptive dampers, a dual-axis front suspension, and Brembo four-piston front brake calipers. These components are intended to support steering response, body control, and repeatable braking while preserving the comfort expected from a road-going grand-tourer.

- High-quality car model: Package size: 9.41×4.96×3.46 in. package weight: 1.01 pounds. Made of zinc alloy, plastic and electronics. Safe material. Suitable for children as well as adults to play.
- Cool light and sound: There is a three-position switch on the bottom of the car. When in the middle gear, the front and rear lights are on continuously. When in the sound gear, pressing on the front of the car triggers sound and light effects, pressing the horn also makes a realistic horn sound.
- Exquisite design:It has detailed interior. The doors, hood and trunk can be opened. Mirrors can be folded. The wheels simulates shock absorption.
- Interesting pull back car: Put the car on the ground, press and hold the car body, then pull back, it will drive forward. Very funny.
- Awesome Gift: The car toy is perfect for birthdays, Christmas gifts, party and cake decorations. It can be a valuable reward gift for kids. It is also good for model car collectors.
The result is a car with legitimate performance hardware, but the hardware should not be mistaken for confirmation of a higher-output Prelude Type R or a separate production model. Honda’s currently confirmed U.S. car is the 200-horsepower hybrid Prelude.
Design and practicality: a sports car with a liftback
Honda presents the Prelude as low and wide, with a two-door coupe silhouette. The liftback opening adds a useful distinction: although the car looks like a conventional specialty coupe, its rear cargo area is accessed through a large hatch-style opening rather than a small sedan trunk.
Recommended Free Tools
The rear seatbacks fold in a 60/40 split. Honda says the cargo area can hold two medium-size suitcases. In its Japanese materials, Honda also describes the folded-seat cargo area as capable of accommodating two golf bags or two surfboards. Exact fit will depend on the size and shape of the items, but the point is clear: Honda designed the Prelude to be more usable than a purely low-slung two-seat sports car.
That practicality is also why the Prelude should be understood as a four-seat sporting coupe or grand-tourer. The rear seats provide additional flexibility, but buyers should not assume that they offer the same space or comfort as a conventional sedan or crossover.
Standard U.S. equipment
Honda’s listed standard equipment includes:
- 19-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels
- Bose premium audio
- Leather-trimmed front sport seats
- Flat-bottom steering wheel
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
- Google built-in
- Alexa built-in
- 9-inch touchscreen
- Wireless phone charging
- Remote engine start
- Honda Sensing driver-assistance features
The two U.S. trims are the Hybrid and Hybrid Two-Tone. Honda lists the two-tone model at a $500 premium before destination and other charges. Premium paint may add further cost where applicable.
Prelude accessories and ownership considerations
Honda Genuine Accessories listed for the Prelude include all-season floor mats, a cargo cover, cargo tray, car cover, splash guards, seat-back protectors, door mirror covers, door visors, a tailgate spoiler, black emblems, wheel locks, and illumination-related items.

That dealer-installed route may be useful for buyers who want accessories integrated into the original vehicle purchase, but the warranty terms and installation details should be confirmed with the selling dealer.
For owners comparing protection options, 2026 Honda Prelude all-season floor mats are worth checking against the official accessory catalog and the vehicle’s exact model-year fitment. An aftermarket listing should not be assumed to fit simply because it uses the Prelude name.
The same caution applies to a 2026 Honda Prelude cargo tray or cargo cover. The liftback makes protecting the cargo area especially relevant, but buyers should verify whether a listing is designed for the sixth-generation 2026 car and whether it is a tray, a flexible cover, or a different accessory altogether.
Owners who park outdoors may also research a Honda Prelude car cover. Fitment matters here: a generic coupe cover may not properly accommodate the Prelude’s liftback shape, mirrors, dimensions, or spoiler. Look for a listing that specifically identifies the 2026 Prelude and the intended indoor or outdoor use.
Is this the new Honda S2000?
No—not in any officially confirmed product-planning sense. The Prelude and S2000 occupy different mechanical and packaging concepts.
| 2026 Honda Prelude | Honda S2000 | |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Four-seat coupe/liftback | Two-seat roadster |
| Powertrain | 2.0-liter hybrid system, 200 hp | High-revving gasoline engine |
| Driven wheels | Front-wheel drive | Rear-wheel drive |
| Transmission | Direct-drive hybrid unit | Manual transmission |
| Primary role | Efficient specialty sports grand-tourer | Lightweight open-top sports car |
Honda has not announced a production S2000 successor in the official materials covered by this research. The Prelude may satisfy some buyers who want a sporty Honda with a distinctive body, but calling it a confirmed S2000 replacement overstates what Honda has said and overlooks the major differences between the two cars.

What about a new NSX?
The same rule applies to NSX speculation. Honda has not officially announced a new road-going NSX, a mid-engine sports car, or a Honda-branded rear-wheel-drive performance coupe in the reviewed announcements.
Renders, forum posts, social-media reports, videos, and enthusiast predictions may suggest possible future products, but they should remain labeled as speculation unless Honda provides a formal production announcement with a name, market, timing, and specifications.
Prelude HRC concepts and the Prelude-GT race car
Honda’s racing and performance announcements have created additional interest around the Prelude, but they do not add a second confirmed street car to the lineup.
At Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, Honda announced a Sport Line for on-road models and a Trail Line for off-road models. Honda said the Sport Line is planned as a new line of production models focused on driving enjoyment and racing-derived technology.
Honda displayed a Civic Type R HRC Concept and a Prelude HRC Concept. Honda also said HRC Performance Parts for the Prelude were under development. A concept and parts under development are not the same as a confirmed production trim, and Honda has not identified the HRC Prelude Concept as a separate U.S.-market road car.
Honda also announced the HRC PRELUDE-GT for the 2026 Super GT season. This is a race car based on the Prelude. It is not a street-legal Prelude variant, and its existence does not prove that Honda is preparing an NSX successor, S2000 successor, or high-performance road version for sale.

What is the Honda Super-ONE Prototype?
The Super-ONE Prototype is another Honda project with sporty positioning, but it is materially different from the Prelude. Honda described it as a fun compact electric vehicle and said its production model was scheduled to go on sale in Japan before the end of 2026.
Honda’s announcement did not establish the Super-ONE as a U.S.-market sports car or provide a U.S. launch date. It should therefore be treated as a Japan-focused future compact EV, not as confirmation of another Honda performance coupe for American buyers.

Honda’s most important forward-looking statement is that the Prelude will serve as a “prelude” to future Honda specialty sports models in the electrified era. That wording supports the idea that Honda is exploring a broader family or strategy of electrified specialty vehicles.

The Sport Line announcement is similarly promising but not specific enough to identify the next Honda sports car. Honda has discussed production models focused on driving enjoyment and racing-derived technology, yet it has not named another production sports-car model or provided a U.S. arrival date for one.

Bottom line
The answer to “What is Honda’s upcoming sports car?” is now straightforward: the 2026 Honda Prelude. It is confirmed, priced, specified, and sold as a production two-door hybrid coupe/liftback.
Its 200 horsepower, front-wheel drive, direct-drive hybrid system, 44-mpg combined rating, four-seat cabin, liftback practicality, S+ Shift system, and Type R-derived chassis hardware make it a distinctive kind of Honda sports car—but not a literal successor to the S2000 or a confirmed replacement for the NSX.
Honda has opened the door to more electrified specialty sports models. Until the company names one and announces its production details, the Prelude is the confirmed car; everything beyond it remains a strategy, concept, race project, or rumor.
