Honda has announced plans to begin introducing vehicles in India’s under-four-metre and mid-size categories in 2028. Media reports expect the smaller vehicle to be a compact SUV that could compete with the Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue, but Honda has not confirmed its body style, name, launch date or specifications.
What Honda has actually announced
At its global results briefing on May 14, 2026, Honda set 2028 as the start of introductions in two India vehicle categories: under four metres and mid-size. That is category-level timing, not a confirmed launch date for a named compact SUV. Honda’s reported plan does not identify the under-four-metre vehicle.

Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the company would tailor specifications to Indian customer needs and market conditions. As quoted by Autocar India on May 14, he said: “We will develop specifications that fully match the market conditions and customer needs in India,” and added that the models would “pursue an optimal balance of performance and price.” Autocar India’s report

Is Honda definitely launching a compact SUV?
Not yet on the evidence available. Automotive coverage widely expects the under-four-metre model to be an SUV, and reports have named established vehicles it might face. Honda has confirmed the category strategy, not the SUV body style or a rival list. Calling it a Nexon or Venue rival is therefore a reasonable expectation, not an official Honda description.

Honda has not disclosed a model name or vehicle-specific technical details in the sources reviewed. There is no confirmed information on the following:

The announcement comes as Honda seeks to strengthen its position in a competitive market. SIAM figures reported by Moneycontrol show Honda sold 61,943 domestic passenger vehicles in FY26, down 6.04% from 65,925 in FY25. The same FY26 figures underline the scale of the segment Honda may enter: Tata Nexon sales were 2,16,054; Maruti Suzuki Brezza, 1,80,104; Maruti Suzuki Fronx, 1,72,363; Hyundai Venue, 1,17,737; Kia Sonet, 1,14,142; and Mahindra XUV 3XO, 1,03,341. These are competitor sales figures, not forecasts for Honda’s future model.
Don’t confuse it with the Honda Elevate
The Elevate is Honda’s existing mid-size SUV, not the planned under-four-metre vehicle. Honda’s October 2026 manufacturer release describes the Elevate with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and manual or CVT transmission options. Honda’s Elevate release No comparable technical information has been published for the future model.

What buyers can—and cannot—compare now
There is not enough confirmed information to make a fair vehicle-to-vehicle comparison or decide whether to wait for Honda’s model. For reference only, Autocar India’s Venue listing accessed October 9, 2026, gives an ex-showroom range of ₹8.00 lakh to ₹15.65 lakh and lists petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel options.
