Honda NSX Common Problems: What to Check Before Buying

A generation-specific guide to checking Honda NSX service history, the early five-speed snap-ring concern, NC1 recall status and specialist inspection needs.

The most important NSX buying checks depend on the car’s generation, year, market and transmission. For a first-generation car, verify timing-belt service against the correct factory schedule and have an NSX specialist assess any applicable 1991–92 five-speed transmission snap-ring concern. For a second-generation car, check recall status by its exact vehicle identity and treat any hybrid-system damage as specialist work. A model-aware pre-purchase inspection is the best way to turn those checks into a decision about the individual car.

The specific issues below are checks to verify—not proof that a particular car is defective or that a problem is common. The cited material does not establish a comprehensive fault list or failure rates across all NSXs.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start by identifying which NSX you are inspecting

“Honda NSX” covers two substantially different generations. The first-generation car is the focus of the buyer-guide and maintenance-schedule details discussed here; the second-generation sources establish a specific fuel-pump recall and high-voltage safety guidance, not a complete list of routine faults. Keep every check tied to the candidate’s model year, market and transmission rather than applying one generation’s advice to all cars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Candidate Evidence-backed priority What to verify
First generation Timing-belt service; a narrowly defined snap-ring concern on certain 1991–92 five-speed cars Year- and market-specific maintenance records, gearbox applicability and repair documentation, then a specialist inspection
Second generation (NC1) Fuel-pump recall applicability and completion; specialist handling of any suspected high-voltage damage Exact chassis/VIN in the recall system for the car’s market, plus authorized NSX-dealer inspection if damaged

There is no reliable basis here for ranking the generations by overall reliability or ownership cost. Nor should an anecdotal fault list be treated as a frequency survey: no broad reliability-rate statistic or comparative failure-rate dataset is established by the cited sources.

Before arranging an inspection, write down the model year, market of original sale or registration, transmission type and odometer reading. Those details determine which maintenance schedule and issue-specific checks may apply. A seller’s description such as “early car” or “all recalls done” is not enough to establish either service history or applicability; ask for the identifiers and documents that support the claim.

First-generation NSX: verify timing-belt service

Ask for dated, mileage-stamped invoices for timing-belt replacement and the associated work. Honda’s 2000 NSX owner-manual maintenance schedule includes timing-belt replacement and water-pump inspection; maintenance is due at the listed mileage or elapsed time, whichever comes first. Use the schedule for the candidate’s exact year and market, rather than assuming the 2000 manual or a schedule from another market automatically applies. Honda’s 2000 NSX Online Reference Owner’s Manual

A buyer guide summarizing the factory schedule for a 1991 U.S.-market Acura NSX gives an interval of 90,000 miles or 72 months, whichever comes first. That is a year- and market-specific reference, not a universal interval for every NSX. The guide also recommends checking the water pump as part of the timing-belt service. Car and Driver’s 1991–2005 Acura NSX buyer’s guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The “whichever comes first” wording matters when comparing low-mileage cars: low odometer use alone does not demonstrate that a time-based service is current. Compare the date of the documented work as well as the mileage with the correct schedule. If an invoice gives only one of those details, ask the shop that performed the work—or an NSX specialist reviewing the car—to clarify what can be verified.

What counts as useful evidence

  • An invoice identifying the work performed, date and odometer reading is more useful than a verbal assurance that the belt was “done.”
  • Ask whether the water pump was inspected and what related parts or work were included; do not infer the scope of a job from the phrase “timing-belt service.”
  • Have the inspecting shop compare the records with the correct schedule for the car’s year and market. If records do not establish when the service was completed, ask the specialist what should be done before purchase.
  • Keep invoices, service-book entries and any follow-up documentation together. A record that identifies the car and the work is easier to assess than an undated receipt or a general statement in an advertisement.

If the history is incomplete, separate what is known from what is assumed. The question is not whether the seller remembers a service, but whether a qualified shop can establish that it was completed at the appropriate time and whether any further work is due. Ask for the shop’s recommendation in writing so the decision and any cost allowance are based on the actual car.

1991–92 five-speed cars: investigate the snap-ring concern

Car and Driver describes a countershaft snap-ring concern for certain 1991 and 1992 five-speed cars. Its warning applies to transmission numbers ending 3542 through 5978: the article says an overly wide internal groove can allow the snap ring to resonate and break. It identifies excessive shifter movement under engine load as a symptom to watch for, and says that when failure occurs it happens early. These details describe that source’s account of a defined group of cars; they do not establish that every 1991–92 five-speed is affected or that an unverified VIN alone proves whether a gearbox is in scope. The number range refers to the transmission, so establish what gearbox is actually in the car rather than relying only on the model year or a seller’s general assurance. If the transmission has been replaced, the current gearbox identity and its repair history are especially relevant. The cited buyer guide’s number range is a prompt for specialist verification, not a substitute for confirming the individual gearbox.

How to check an individual gearbox

  1. Confirm the model year and that the car has the relevant five-speed transmission.
  2. Ask the seller for the transmission number and records of any inspection or repair related to the snap ring.
  3. Have an NSX-experienced technician confirm whether the transmission number and gearbox configuration match the concern described in the buyer guide.
  4. Ask the specialist to assess shifter movement under load and provide a written finding. Do not diagnose the internal condition yourself from a brief road test.
  5. If a repair is claimed, request documentation that identifies the work and the transmission. Treat an undocumented assurance as unresolved until the shop can verify it.

The guide says the failure, when it occurs, happens early. That statement is not a guarantee that an older car is unaffected: the individual gearbox still needs assessment, especially when its repair history is unknown. A symptom-free test drive also cannot establish internal condition by itself. If applicability remains uncertain, pause the purchase until a specialist has reviewed the transmission details and records.

Second-generation NSX: check recall status by exact identity

Honda Japan’s updated notice concerns a fuel-pump recall for specified NC1 chassis-number and production-date ranges. Its table totals 211 vehicles, but Honda explicitly notes that some cars within a listed range may not require modification. The total therefore is not a claim that every car in those ranges needs repair, and it does not mean every second-generation NSX is affected. Honda Japan’s updated NSX fuel-pump recall notice

  1. Record the exact VIN or chassis number and the car’s market of registration.
  2. Check the relevant national recall system or contact a Honda dealer in that market; a Japan-specific notice is not a substitute for checking another country’s records.
  3. Ask whether the vehicle is affected and whether the remedy has been completed. Keep written confirmation or recall-service documentation with the purchase records.
  4. If the seller cannot establish the status, make confirmation by an authorized dealer a condition of the sale or resolve it before completing the purchase.

Use the recall notice’s own identifiers to check the car. Do not generalize from production date or model name alone, and do not assume that a listed chassis range means every vehicle within it requires work. A recall listing and proof of completed work are different questions: ask the dealer to confirm both applicability and completion for the exact car.

Hybrid-system damage is a safety and specialist issue

Honda’s 2017 NSX emergency-response guide describes a high-voltage battery behind the seats and gives emergency guidance for a damaged car. It says: “A damaged Honda NSX should be taken directly to an authorised Honda NSX dealer for a thorough inspection and repairs.” Honda Europe’s 2017 NSX Emergency Response Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is safety guidance, not evidence that hybrid-battery failure is a common NSX problem, a diagnostic procedure for buyers, or a scheduled battery replacement interval. If the car has collision or other damage that could involve high-voltage components, do not attempt to inspect or repair those components yourself. Have the vehicle assessed by an authorized Honda NSX dealer before purchase or return to service.

For a candidate with a damage history, ask what happened, request available repair documentation and disclose that history when arranging the inspection. A general mechanical inspection does not replace the guide’s recommendation for authorized dealer assessment when damage may involve high-voltage systems. The information cited here does not support a buyer-side battery test, an expected battery lifespan, or a diagnosis based on warning lights alone.

Arrange a model-aware pre-purchase inspection

Car and Driver recommends a pre-purchase inspection and warns that NSX parts and repairs can be expensive. Use a shop experienced with the NSX, and ask for a written report based on the actual car—not a generic checklist alone. The cited material does not establish a complete fault inventory, so the inspector should combine the car’s history and generation-specific checks with an assessment of its present condition. Car and Driver’s buyer’s guide

There is no supported universal repair-cost figure to use as a shortcut. The buyer guide’s warning about expensive parts and repairs makes it sensible to obtain estimates for findings that actually apply to the car, rather than budgeting from an unverified online list. Ask the shop to distinguish work needed now, work that is due under the applicable schedule, and questions that require further diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before the appointment

  • Ask the seller for the model year, market, transmission type, odometer reading and available service invoices.
  • For a potentially applicable early five-speed, obtain the transmission number and any snap-ring repair documentation.
  • For a first-generation car, collect timing-belt and water-pump service records with dates and mileage.
  • For an NC1, obtain the exact vehicle identity and any recall-completion records.
  • Tell the shop about known collision or other damage so it can determine whether authorized high-voltage inspection is needed.

Ask for findings you can act on

Request that the written report distinguish verified facts from items the shop could not confirm. It should state which records were reviewed, whether the relevant transmission or recall check applied, what service is due or undocumented, and which findings require further diagnosis. Ask the technician to identify any repair estimate or safety-related follow-up separately from routine maintenance, so you can make an informed decision rather than treating every unknown as a confirmed defect.

Before committing, ask the shop to connect each recommendation to an observation or a record: for example, a service interval that cannot be documented, a transmission number that needs confirmation, or a recall status that remains unresolved. This makes it easier to discuss the report with the seller and decide whether a repair, further inspection or price adjustment is appropriate. Do not treat a general “looks good” assessment as confirmation of checks the shop did not perform.

Compare two candidate cars using the same evidence

When choosing between NSXs, compare their documentation and inspection findings on a like-for-like basis. A longer list of claimed services is not necessarily stronger than a smaller set of verifiable invoices and clear specialist findings.

When one car has more complete records, account for that difference as reduced uncertainty, not as proof that the other car has a defect. A documented service or repair should still be checked for date, mileage, vehicle identity and scope. Conversely, a missing invoice does not prove that work was never done; it means the buyer may need a specialist’s assessment before deciding how to value the car.

Parts support: verify fitment and local availability

Honda announced its Heritage Works service business in December 2025, with a planned April 2026 start. The announcement said the service would begin with the first-generation NSX, include Heritage Parts for certain discontinued genuine components, and use Honda’s standard parts channels for global distribution. It also described a Japan-based restoration service. The announcement does not establish that every discontinued part is available now, that a particular component fits a particular car, or that restoration service is offered on the same terms in every market. Check Honda’s current catalog and ask a local distributor about stock, eligibility and service terms. Honda Global’s Heritage Works announcement

Honda’s announcement described the first-generation NSX as the starting point, with plans to expand the program to other classic sport-type models in the future. That is a program direction, not a promise that a specific part is in stock or that every repair can be completed through the service. Confirm current availability and terms directly with Honda or a local parts channel before making a purchase decision that depends on a discontinued component.

For timing-belt or other service parts, confirm the model year, engine, market and VIN with the supplier or technician before ordering. The owner-manual schedule establishes a maintenance requirement; it does not establish a current product listing or universal kit fitment. Have a qualified NSX technician confirm the required parts and perform the work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should you walk away—or pause the purchase?

  • Pause for missing maintenance evidence: if the belt history cannot be established, ask a specialist to determine the service needed and factor that work into your decision.
  • Pause for an unresolved gearbox question: if an early five-speed may fall within the described transmission-number range and no competent assessment or repair record is available, resolve applicability with an NSX specialist before agreeing on the car.
  • Pause for unclear recall status: for an NC1, verify the specific vehicle with the correct market’s recall system or dealer rather than relying on a seller’s general statement.
  • Do not treat high-voltage damage as a routine DIY inspection: have a damaged second-generation car assessed by an authorized NSX dealer.
  • Reconsider if the seller refuses a specialist inspection: the NSX-specific checks depend on records and expertise that a generic visual check cannot replace.

A missing record is not itself proof of a failed component. It is an uncertainty to resolve, price or accept knowingly; a written specialist finding gives you a better basis for that choice. If the uncertainty cannot be resolved before purchase, make sure you understand what remains unknown rather than treating a seller’s assurance as documentation.

What the known checks do—and do not—tell you

The strongest source-backed checks here concern first-generation timing-belt maintenance and a narrowly described early five-speed transmission issue. The second-generation evidence establishes a defined recall notice and safety guidance for damaged hybrid vehicles, not a broad NC1 reliability profile. Reports of items such as window regulators or climate-control electronics are not sufficiently corroborated in the cited material to present as established common defects. Avoid treating the checks above as a complete NSX fault list or as claims that any issue is universal, inevitable or frequent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for when buying a Honda NSX?

Start with the car’s generation, model year, market and transmission. Check first-generation timing-belt and water-pump records against the correct schedule; have an NSX specialist verify any applicable 1991–92 five-speed snap-ring concern; and check NC1 recall status by exact vehicle identity in the relevant market. Arrange a model-aware pre-purchase inspection.

What are the common problems with a Honda NSX?

The cited material supports specific checks, not a comprehensive fault list or failure-rate ranking. It identifies timing-belt maintenance, a narrowly defined snap-ring concern on certain early five-speeds, a specific NC1 fuel-pump recall, and high-voltage safety handling for damaged second-generation cars. These should not be treated as proof that the issues are universal or frequent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every 1991–92 five-speed NSX have the snap-ring issue?

No. Car and Driver’s 2012 buyer guide describes a concern for certain 1991–92 five-speed cars and gives transmission numbers ending 3542 through 5978. Ask an NSX specialist to confirm the individual gearbox’s applicability and review any repair documentation; the model year alone does not establish that it is affected.

Are all second-generation NSXs included in the fuel-pump recall?

No. Honda Japan’s notice lists defined NC1 chassis-number and production-date ranges, totals 211 vehicles, and says some vehicles within a listed range may not need modification. Check the exact VIN or chassis number and completion status in the recall system for the car’s market.

How much should I budget for NSX repairs?

The buyer guide warns that NSX parts and repairs can be expensive, but the cited sources do not provide a current universal repair-cost figure or ownership-cost ranking. Have an NSX-experienced shop inspect the actual car and obtain estimates for confirmed work rather than relying on a generic budget.

Can I inspect a damaged second-generation NSX’s hybrid battery myself?

No buyer diagnostic procedure is established here. Honda’s 2017 emergency-response guide says a damaged NSX should go to an authorized Honda NSX dealer for thorough inspection and repairs. Treat suspected high-voltage damage as specialist work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Buy the individual NSX, not a reputation or a checklist. Verify the correct service history, resolve any generation-specific concern with a qualified specialist, confirm NC1 recall status by exact vehicle identity, and get a written pre-purchase inspection. The documented checks help expose uncertainty; they do not establish that every NSX has the same faults or costs.
