Honda Gold Wing Tour vs. BMW K 1600 GTL: Which Luxury Touring Bike Suits You?

Honda’s Gold Wing Tour offers a clutch-free DCT option and documented trunk capacity; BMW’s K 1600 GTL publishes inline-six output and a broad equipment list. Compare the U.S. model-year prices and specifications before choosing.

Choose the Honda Gold Wing Tour DCT if you want a clutch-free transmission, a documented 61-liter trunk and wireless phone integration. Choose the BMW K 1600 GTL if its published inline-six output, larger stated fuel capacity, TFT navigation and listed touring equipment matter more to you. That’s a comparison of manufacturer specifications—not a verdict on which bike rides better. The available U.S. figures also cover different model years: Honda’s 2027 Gold Wing Tour and BMW’s 2026 K 1600 GTL. Sit on both, and test ride with your intended passenger and luggage before deciding.

Honda Gold Wing Tour vs. BMW K 1600 GTL: the key differences

These are both fully equipped, large-displacement touring motorcycles, but their published specifications and equipment point to different priorities. Honda offers a choice between a conventional manual transmission and its automatic-style Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT); the BMW lists a six-speed gearbox. Honda documents trunk capacity and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. BMW publishes engine output and lists a broad package of standard touring and rider-assistance equipment.

Price is not a direct same-year comparison: Honda’s figures are for 2027, while BMW’s U.S. price is for the 2026 model year. The weights are reported using different definitions, and the available figures do not establish which motorcycle is easier to handle, more comfortable for two people, or less expensive to own.

The practical decision is less about declaring a universal winner and more about ranking your needs. Do you want to operate a clutch, or would you rather have the DCT option? Is a specified trunk volume more useful to you than a set of side cases and a top case? Do you care most about Honda’s documented phone integration, or BMW’s published power figure and TFT navigation arrangement? Those questions are easier to answer than broad claims about which motorcycle is inherently better.

How much does each motorcycle cost?

Honda’s 2027 U.S. Gold Wing Tour lineup has three published base MSRPs. The manufacturer lists a $775 destination charge for each, with the displayed totals below. Those totals are not dealer out-the-door prices: taxes, registration and other charges may affect what you pay.

Motorcycle and U.S. model year Base MSRP Destination Displayed total
Honda Gold Wing Tour, manual (2027) $29,700 $775 $30,475
Honda Gold Wing Tour Automatic DCT (2027) $30,700 $775 $31,475
Honda Gold Wing Tour Airbag Automatic DCT (2027) $34,000 $775 $34,775
BMW K 1600 GTL (2026) $29,995 Plus destination; amount not stated in the cited U.S. announcement Not stated

BMW’s $29,995 figure is the U.S. manufacturer’s base MSRP for the 2026 K 1600 GTL, announced in 2025. BMW’s announcement associates its equipment and pricing with production from February 1, 2026. Because its destination charge is additional and no amount is established here, do not compare BMW’s base figure directly with Honda’s displayed price-plus-destination totals. Neither figure accounts for dealer-installed accessories, local fees or taxes.

So, how much does a K 1600 GTL cost? The cited U.S. base price is $29,995 plus destination for model year 2026. The final amount depends on destination, local charges, taxes, registration and any selected equipment or dealer-installed accessories. Ask for a written, itemized quote rather than treating the MSRP as the amount due.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Honda’s listed prices make the trim step visible: the 2027 DCT version has a $1,000 higher base MSRP than the manual Tour, while the Airbag Automatic DCT is priced $3,300 above the standard DCT Tour. These are differences between published base MSRPs, not a claim about the value of each feature or the final negotiated price. Ask the dealer to confirm that the quote reflects the exact trim you intend to buy and includes the appropriate destination charge.

Because the Honda and BMW prices are for different model years and are presented with different destination-charge information, the table is useful for setting expectations, not for declaring one model cheaper in a fully matched comparison. Prices, packages and availability can change. Check current U.S. manufacturer information and local inventory when you are ready to shop.

What are the engine and transmission differences?

The Honda uses a liquid-cooled 1,833cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine. The BMW uses an oil/water-cooled 1,649cc inline-six, with shaft drive and a six-speed gearbox. BMW publishes its engine output as 160 hp at 6,750 rpm and 132.7 lb-ft of torque at 5,250 rpm. The current Honda specification cited here establishes its displacement and engine layout, but not an equivalent horsepower figure. A direct horsepower comparison would therefore go beyond the available specifications.

That distinction matters when comparing headline numbers. Honda’s larger stated displacement does not, by itself, establish higher or lower output, and BMW’s published horsepower and torque figures do not establish how either engine will feel to a particular rider. Treat the configuration and quoted output as separate facts, not a complete prediction of sound, acceleration, smoothness or character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Honda: manual or clutch-free DCT

Gold Wing Tour buyers can choose a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT, depending on trim. The DCT provides an automatic-style, clutch-free choice; Honda also lists forward and reverse walking mode for DCT versions. The manual Tour remains an option for riders who want to operate a conventional clutch and shift themselves. The Airbag model is a separate, higher-priced automatic DCT trim, not a feature of every Tour.

If you’re asking, “Is the Gold Wing DCT worth it?”, the answer depends on whether avoiding clutch operation is important enough to justify the price difference and to make the automatic trim your preferred configuration. Compare the trims in person and test the DCT’s low-speed operation for yourself; specifications alone cannot tell you which transmission will feel more natural.

A useful way to decide is to imagine the situations in which you ride. If you prefer choosing each gear and working a clutch, the manual gives you that conventional control. If you specifically want a clutch-free option, the DCT is the Honda configuration to consider. Honda lists forward and reverse walking mode for DCT versions, a detail worth asking a dealer to demonstrate so you understand how it operates before purchase. Don’t assume the manual has the DCT’s walking-mode feature.

The price comparison also depends on which Honda you mean. The standard DCT Tour’s base MSRP is $1,000 above the manual Tour, before other charges. The Airbag Automatic DCT is another, higher-priced trim at $34,000 base MSRP. It should not be confused with a standard Tour that happens to have an automatic transmission; confirm the exact designation and equipment on the quote.

BMW: published output, six-speed gearbox

The K 1600 GTL’s published output gives a buyer a concrete power figure to weigh when comparing engines. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that the BMW will feel faster or more responsive in every riding situation. The engine layouts differ, but smoothness, sound, character and response are rider impressions—not conclusions established by the cited specification data.

BMW lists a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive for the GTL. Honda’s Tour choices are a six-speed manual or seven-speed DCT, so the number of ratios alone does not tell you which powertrain is preferable. Consider whether you want the manual clutch, the Honda DCT, or the BMW’s listed gearbox, then evaluate operation and engine feel on a test ride. A specification sheet cannot substitute for trying the controls yourself.

Which one is lighter, and how much fuel does each hold?

Specification Honda Gold Wing Tour (2027) BMW K 1600 GTL
Reported weight 845 lb curb weight, including standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank 789 lb road-ready and fully fuelled, under BMW’s stated European guideline
Fuel capacity 5.5 U.S. gallons Approximately 7 U.S. gallons usable volume

The BMW’s published number is lower, but these are not identical measurement conventions. The figures do not support treating the difference as a controlled, apples-to-apples comparison of the motorcycles’ weight. Nor do they show how either bike will feel when stationary, moving slowly, carrying luggage or being maneuvered on a slope. Balance, seat position and confidence with the bike beneath you matter; try the actual motorcycle rather than deciding from the figures alone.

If your question is simply “Which one is lighter?”, BMW lists 789 lb road-ready and fully fuelled, while Honda lists 845 lb curb weight with standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank. The BMW figure is numerically lower, but the stated methods differ. It is more accurate to report both definitions than to present the 56-lb subtraction as a controlled like-for-like weight difference. Neither figure tells you how easy the bike will feel to pick up from its stand, turn around or balance with a passenger aboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful fit check, try the actual motorcycle in a stationary position if the dealer permits it. Assess your reach to the controls and the ground, how confidently you can stabilize the bike, and whether you can manage low-speed turns. Ask about a permitted test ride and assess the bike in the configuration you expect to use. A spec-sheet weight is one consideration; it is not a substitute for your own confidence with the motorcycle.

The BMW has the larger stated usable fuel capacity. Tank size alone does not establish riding range: a comparable fuel-economy figure is not provided here, and actual range depends on use and conditions. Do not turn the capacity comparison into a promise about how far either bike will go between stops.

BMW lists approximately 7 U.S. gallons of usable tank volume, compared with Honda’s 5.5-gallon capacity. That makes BMW’s stated capacity larger, but it does not prove a particular distance advantage. No matched fuel-economy comparison is available here, so plan routes and fuel stops using current information for the exact motorcycle and your own riding conditions—not capacity alone.

How much luggage can each carry?

Honda documents a 61-liter trunk on the Gold Wing Tour. That is a stated trunk volume, not a figure for all possible luggage carried on the motorcycle. BMW lists side cases and a top case as equipment on the K 1600 GTL, but the cited specifications do not give their combined volume. Without a comparable BMW luggage-volume figure, the evidence cannot establish which bike carries more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think about what you actually travel with: passenger gear, rain layers, helmets and any items that need to stay accessible. If luggage capacity could decide the purchase, bring representative items to a dealer and check how they fit in the specific model’s cases. Confirm the configuration and included equipment for the exact bike you are considering.

The 61-liter figure applies to Honda’s Tour trunk; it should not be read as a total carrying capacity for every bag or storage area. BMW’s listing of side cases and a top case confirms the luggage arrangement, but not their combined volume. A litre-for-litre winner cannot be named from those details alone. The useful comparison is whether the actual storage shape and access work for the belongings you take on a trip.

Before choosing, check which luggage pieces are fitted to the specific motorcycle and how they open, lock and accommodate your usual items. If you travel two-up, check whether both riders’ gear fits rather than judging capacity from an empty case. For items you need while stopped, consider accessibility as well as volume. Don’t infer that one carries more simply because its manufacturer publishes a trunk capacity while the other lists multiple cases.

What touring and technology equipment does each include?

Gold Wing Tour

Honda lists electronic preload suspension and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for the Tour. The documented 61-liter trunk may be especially useful if enclosed storage is a priority. Transmission availability depends on trim, so check the specific manual or DCT version rather than assuming every feature applies to every Gold Wing Tour variant.

Wireless phone integration is a concrete distinction for riders who want compatible Apple CarPlay or Android Auto access without treating a phone setup as universal. Confirm that your phone and intended apps work as expected, and ask how the system operates on the motorcycle you are considering. The product-page compatibility claim does not answer every question about a particular phone, app or connectivity configuration.

Electronic preload suspension is another listed Tour feature. The available information identifies the system but does not provide a comparative ride evaluation or establish that it will suit every rider or passenger. If suspension adjustment is important to your loaded touring plans, ask the dealer to explain the controls and what adjustments are available on the exact trim.

K 1600 GTL

BMW’s technical information lists a 10.25-inch color TFT with connectivity and integrated map navigation through the BMW Motorrad Connected App. It also lists USB-C phone charging storage and Audio System 2.0 with satellite radio and sound profiles. The GTL equipment list includes heated grips and seat, keyless ride, adaptive cornering light, Dynamic ESA with automatic load leveling, tire-pressure monitoring, reverse assist and three riding modes.

BMW’s 2026 U.S. announcement also identifies adaptive headlight, ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control, Hill Start Control Pro, cruise control, reversing aid and intelligent emergency call as standard equipment. It describes the Premium Package as optional. Options and package contents can change the configuration, so ask the dealer to identify what is standard on the exact bike and what requires a package. Do not assume that every feature on a technical or equipment list comes with every locally available motorcycle.

Honda Gold Wing
  • Used Book in Good Condition

The TFT and navigation arrangement is a different approach from Honda’s documented wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. BMW lists integrated map navigation through its Connected App on a 10.25-inch display, alongside USB-C charging storage. Those are equipment descriptions, not a guarantee that one interface will be easier for you to use. Check the interface and phone setup in person, especially if navigation, audio or charging is central to your touring routine.

The BMW list is extensive, but a buyer should separate a feature name from a package assumption. Its U.S. 2026 announcement identifies several items as standard and says the Premium Package is optional; a dealer should confirm the exact motorcycle’s equipment and any package additions. Likewise, a technical equipment list is not proof that every used, prior-year or locally available bike has the same configuration.

For a side-by-side equipment check, make a short list of features you will actually use: phone connection, navigation, audio, heated contact points, load adjustment, rider aids and low-speed assistance. Then confirm the feature’s status and operation on the specific stock number. Counting features without checking what is standard, optional or present on the bike can lead to a misleading comparison.

Which is better for two-up touring?

The published information is not a passenger-comfort comparison. It does not provide a matched evaluation of seat comfort, wind protection, passenger space, low-speed stability or how either bike behaves with a passenger and luggage. BMW lists seat heating and automatic load leveling among its equipment; that may matter to a buyer weighing those features, but it does not establish that the BMW is more comfortable overall. Honda’s trunk and phone integration may suit a different set of touring priorities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For two-up use, have both people sit on each motorcycle and check the passenger’s seating position, reach to grab rails, leg room and view. If possible, test ride with the passenger and representative luggage. Pay attention to whether the wind protection works for both of you and whether the fully loaded bike feels manageable during slow turns and stops. Comfort is personal, and an unladen showroom sit cannot answer every question about a full day on the road.

Make the passenger part of the comparison rather than treating them as an afterthought. Check whether both riders can settle into a natural position, whether the passenger can reach the grab rails, and whether the view and wind protection feel acceptable to them. Ask whether the seat and controls make a short sit comfortable, but remember that a showroom visit cannot reproduce hours on the road.

For a longer trip, also consider what changes when luggage is aboard. BMW lists Dynamic ESA with automatic load leveling, as well as heated grips and seat; those are relevant equipment facts to discuss, not evidence that the BMW is automatically the better two-up choice. Honda’s storage and wireless phone compatibility may be more relevant for another pair. A passenger’s comfort, the rider’s low-speed confidence and the couple’s preferences should decide the question after an in-person fit check or test ride.

Which should you buy?

Choose the Gold Wing Tour if…

  • You want the choice of a clutch-free DCT, or you specifically prefer Honda’s manual option.
  • The published 61-liter trunk and wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility suit your travel routine.
  • You want to select among the listed 2027 Tour trims, including a separate airbag-equipped DCT version.

Choose the K 1600 GTL if…

  • You place particular importance on BMW’s published 160 hp and 132.7 lb-ft output figures.
  • The larger stated usable tank capacity matters to your planning, while recognizing that capacity is not the same as real-world range.
  • You value the listed TFT and Connected App navigation setup, side cases and top case, or specific standard equipment such as heated grips and seat.

Neither list settles questions of fit, engine feel, passenger comfort or confidence at low speed. Those are reasons to test ride rather than infer a winner from the spec sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In short, the Honda is the more direct match if a clutch-free transmission is a must-have: the DCT is a defined trim choice, and Honda also publishes a trunk volume and wireless phone compatibility. The BMW makes a stronger case on the cited figures if its 160 hp output, approximately 7-gallon usable fuel capacity, TFT navigation setup and listed equipment line up with your priorities. These are buying-fit conclusions from the published specifications, not proof of a road-performance winner.

If you are undecided, compare the exact bikes you would actually buy, not just the model names. Verify the Honda trim and the BMW package configuration, sit on both with your passenger, inspect the luggage and controls, and ride them if possible. Then compare complete dealer quotes for the relevant model years. A feature that matters to your travel routine is more useful than a longer list of features you may never use.

What to confirm before paying a deposit

  1. Match the model year and trim. The price comparison here uses Honda’s 2027 U.S. figures and BMW’s 2026 U.S. figure. Ask for the year, trim and stock configuration shown on the written quote.
  2. Get a complete price breakdown. Confirm destination, dealer charges, accessories, tax and registration, and ask for the total due. Honda’s displayed totals include its listed destination charge; BMW’s cited base MSRP is plus destination.
  3. Verify transmission and included equipment. Check whether the Honda is manual, DCT or Airbag DCT. For the BMW, confirm which listed items are standard on that exact motorcycle and which depend on an option or package.
  4. Assess fit in the intended configuration. Sit on the bike with your passenger, test low-speed maneuvers where permitted and consider the luggage you expect to carry.
  5. Check current local availability and specifications. Manufacturer pricing, options and availability can change. Have the dealer verify the exact model and equipment for your market before you commit.

Take the written quote away long enough to compare line by line. On Honda, check that it names the manual, Automatic DCT or Airbag Automatic DCT trim and includes the listed $775 destination charge. On BMW, make sure the base MSRP is not mistaken for a destination-inclusive total. Ask the dealer to identify any accessories, package charges and fees separately so you can compare the actual configurations, not just the headline prices.

Before a test ride, confirm what the dealer permits and whether you can try the controls and low-speed functions safely. Bring the passenger who will travel with you if possible. If navigation or phone integration matters, ask to see the system operating with a compatible phone. If storage is decisive, bring representative bags or gear. Those simple checks can answer purchase questions the published specification tables cannot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honda Gold Wing Tour vs BMW K 1600 GTL: which should I buy?

Choose based on your priorities rather than a universal winner. The Gold Wing Tour is the clearer fit if you want a manual-or-DCT choice, Honda’s documented 61-liter trunk and wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. The K 1600 GTL may suit you better if BMW’s published 160 hp and 132.7 lb-ft, larger stated usable tank, TFT navigation and listed equipment matter more. Test ride both if possible.

Which is better for two-up touring?

The available specifications do not establish which is more comfortable for a rider and passenger. BMW lists heated seat and automatic load leveling, while Honda documents a 61-liter trunk and wireless phone integration. Have both people sit on each bike, check passenger space and grab-rail reach, and test ride with the intended passenger and luggage if permitted.

Is the Gold Wing DCT worth it?

It depends on whether a clutch-free transmission is valuable to you. The 2027 Tour Automatic DCT has a $30,700 base MSRP, compared with $29,700 for the manual Tour, before the $775 destination charge. Honda also lists forward and reverse walking mode for DCT versions. Try the operation yourself and compare the exact trims before deciding.

How much does a BMW K 1600 GTL cost?

BMW’s cited U.S. base MSRP for the 2026 K 1600 GTL is $29,995 plus destination. The destination amount is not stated in the cited U.S. announcement, and the final dealer price can also include taxes, registration, fees and accessories. Request a complete written quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which one is lighter?

BMW lists 789 lb road-ready and fully fuelled under its stated European guideline. Honda lists 845 lb curb weight including standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank. BMW’s number is lower, but the measurement conventions differ, so the figures are not a controlled apples-to-apples comparison.

How much luggage can each carry?

Honda documents a 61-liter trunk for the Gold Wing Tour. BMW lists side cases and a top case for the K 1600 GTL, but the cited specifications do not give their combined volume. The figures do not establish which carries more; check the actual cases and bring representative luggage to a dealer.

Does the BMW have more range than the Honda?

BMW lists approximately 7 U.S. gallons of usable fuel capacity and Honda lists 5.5 gallons. That indicates a larger stated tank capacity for the BMW, not a guaranteed range advantage. A comparable fuel-economy figure is not provided, and real range depends on use and conditions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Gold Wing Tour is the stronger fit if you want a clutch-free DCT option, a documented 61-liter trunk and wireless phone integration. The K 1600 GTL is compelling if you prioritize its published 160 hp inline-six, larger stated fuel capacity, TFT navigation and listed touring equipment. These U.S. figures compare Honda’s 2027 model with BMW’s 2026 model, and they do not establish a winner for comfort, handling or real-world range. Verify trim, options and full dealer pricing, then test ride with your passenger and luggage.
