The Honda CR-Z pairs a compact hybrid powertrain with a six-speed manual option, an unusual combination that gives it a more involving character than the usual economy-focused hybrid. It is best understood as a small, two-seat-first hatchback with modest rear seats—not a practical substitute for a conventional compact hatch. Whether one is worth buying depends on the individual car, its market-specific specification, maintenance history and price.
What makes the Honda CR-Z different?
Honda launched the CR-Z in 2010 as a compact hybrid aimed at driving enjoyment. Its 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine and Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system could be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, a rare combination for a hybrid. That gives manual versions a distinct appeal, but the CR-Z is not a high-performance sports car: its draw is the unusual blend of hybrid assistance, compact size and driver involvement.
Practicality is more limited than the hatchback shape might suggest. The rear seats are not a substitute for the usable space of a conventional compact hatchback, so buyers should check the seating and cargo arrangement in person against their own needs.
How did the CR-Z change over time?
Honda Japan’s model archive divides the car’s production into archived ranges covering February 2010–January 2017: 2010–2012, 2012–2015 and 2015–2017. The details below are Honda’s Japanese-market descriptions; specifications and equipment differ by country and year.

| Period | What changed or stood out |
|---|---|
| 2010 launch | Honda described a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine with IMA hybrid assistance and offered a six-speed manual. Honda calls out the manual as a first for a hybrid car. |
| 2012 Japanese update | Honda listed 120 PS for the manual, a 20 PS motor and adoption of a lithium-ion battery. The Japanese-market CVT version was rated at 23.0 km/L on the JC08 test cycle. |
| 2015 Japanese update | Honda described styling revisions, a wider rear track, revised suspension tuning, larger brake discs and an electronic parking brake. |
These figures should not be used to identify North American or other-market trims. For a specific car, check its market’s brochure or vehicle records rather than assuming Japanese specifications apply.
What fuel economy did the U.S. CR-Z achieve?
American Honda’s model-year 2011 press-kit materials list 37 mpg combined EPA for the U.S. CVT-equipped CR-Z. That is a period rating for that model year and transmission, not a universal figure for all CR-Zs. EPA ratings and real-world results depend on configuration and driving conditions.

What should you pay for a used CR-Z?
There is no single fair price that applies across markets and cars. The available U.S. references use different methods and should be treated as context, not as a direct price range:
| Reference | Reported figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Kelley Blue Book, accessed October 8, 2026 | $5,025 resale value; dealer purchase prices of $5,575–$6,025 | Values shown on KBB’s 2013 CR-Z page; specific assumptions may apply to its valuation. |
| UnderMarketCars, September 12, 2026 | $9,850 median asking price across 129 active dealer listings | A listing snapshot across CR-Z model years, not a completed-sale value. |
The figures are not apples-to-apples: one is a year-specific valuation reference, while the other is a median asking price across listings and years. Compare cars locally by year, trim, transmission, mileage, condition, accident history and maintenance records. An asking price is not proof of a car’s value.

How to inspect a CR-Z before buying
The available evidence does not support a dependable model-wide reliability ranking or a complete list of common failures. Avoid treating isolated owner anecdotes as proof of a general defect. Assess the specific vehicle and its records.

- Confirm the exact car. Check model year, original market, trim and transmission against the registration and vehicle identification number (VIN). Use the correct market’s specifications when comparing equipment.
- Review maintenance and accident history. Ask for service records and investigate gaps, repairs or accident disclosures. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the car’s general mechanical condition.
- Check the hybrid system and test-drive it. Look for warning lights or abnormal behavior, and arrange a professional assessment if the hybrid system’s condition is unclear. A test drive should include the features and operating conditions you expect to use.
- Verify recall status by VIN. Honda Japan’s recall 2805, filed September 5, 2011, concerns the auxiliary motor ECU. Its notice lists 7,783 eligible Japanese-market six-speed manual cars produced from December 24, 2009 through June 14, 2011, while cautioning that some vehicles in that production interval are outside the correction population. Check the individual VIN with Honda or the relevant national recall service; do not assume every CR-Z or every manual is affected.
- Compare price with comparable local cars. Match year, trim, transmission, mileage, condition and history as closely as possible. Use valuation references and current asking prices as separate inputs, not interchangeable measures.
Who is the CR-Z a good fit for?
- Consider it if you want a compact hybrid with an available manual and accept that its appeal is more about character than sports-car performance.
- Look elsewhere if you need genuinely useful rear seats or the space and flexibility of a conventional compact hatchback.
- Choose by condition, not reputation. A well-documented example with verified recall status and a price grounded in local comparisons is a stronger prospect than a car selected on model-year claims alone.
