At Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, it displayed the Civic e:HEV RS Prototype, a concept-car exhibit previewing a sportier RS grade planned for production in Japan. Honda cited touring-car history as a design inspiration, but the display was not a competition car.
Was the Civic e:HEV RS Prototype a race car?
No. Honda described it as a prototype previewing a planned production RS grade of the Civic e:HEV, and the Tokyo Auto Salon vehicle listing classified the exhibit as a concept car. The show listing also said it was not for public-road use or sale. The race-car connection is its design reference, not its identity.
Honda said the prototype’s styling pays homage to a Civic that competed and won the All-Japan Touring Car Championship nearly 30 years earlier. The release did not identify that older car, its driver, class, or exact year. Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s January 9, 2026 release described the tribute as expressing the company’s continuing passion for driving performance.
What did Honda announce?
A planned production RS grade
The Civic e:HEV RS Prototype previews a sportier RS trim of the hybrid Civic. Honda said the production model based on the prototype was scheduled to go on sale in Japan before the end of 2026. That was Honda’s stated plan at the time of its announcement; the cited material does not confirm that the sale began or establish availability in other markets.

Honda S+ Shift
Honda said the production RS would be the second model, after the all-new Prelude, to receive S+ Shift control technology for hybrid-electric vehicles. The company presented the technology as part of the driving experience, but did not provide prototype-specific power, acceleration, fuel-economy, or other performance figures in the announcement. Honda’s December 24, 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon exhibit overview also identified S+ Shift as a feature associated with the Prelude and the Civic e:HEV RS Prototype.
When and where was it shown?
The prototype was displayed at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, held January 9–11 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Honda’s event page lists the Civic e:HEV RS Prototype among the models shown. The official Tokyo Auto Salon vehicle entry identifies it as a concept car and notes that it was not for sale or public-road use.

What is—and is not—known about the car?
- Established: Honda presented a prototype for a planned sportier Civic e:HEV RS production grade, and announced S+ Shift for the model.
- Not established in the cited announcements: production specifications, power, acceleration, fuel economy, pricing, or a confirmed launch date beyond Honda’s stated plan to begin sales in Japan before the end of 2026.
- Not established: whether the production model will be sold outside Japan.
Accordingly, figures for another Civic trim or market should not be treated as specifications for this prototype.
