Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a like-for-like comparison, match the India-market Honda City 1.5 petrol CVT against the naturally aspirated Hyundai Verna 1.5 MPi iVT. The City has a small published power-and-torque advantage, but the available figures do not prove it accelerates faster. The Verna has the higher published claimed fuel-efficiency figure in a recent comparison; accessible real-world test results are not available to establish a mileage winner.
Which versions are being compared?
Hyundai calls its continuously variable automatic an iVT, or Intelligent variable transmission. It is the relevant counterpart to the City petrol CVT here. The City e:HEV uses a hybrid e-CVT, while the Verna Turbo is paired with a seven-speed DCT; both are different powertrains and should not be folded into this naturally aspirated comparison.

Engine output and performance
| Car and powertrain | Published engine output | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Honda City 1.5 i-VTEC petrol | 121 PS at 6,600 rpm; 145 Nm at 4,300 rpm | Seven-speed CVT |
| Hyundai Verna 1.5 MPi petrol | 115 PS at 6,300 rpm; 143.8 Nm at 4,500 rpm | iVT on selected trims |
Honda Cars India lists the City figures on its 2026 specification page; Hyundai India lists the Verna figures on its performance page. On those published specifications, the City leads by 6 PS and 1.2 Nm. That is a modest engine-output difference, not a measured acceleration result: gearing, vehicle mass, throttle calibration and test conditions also affect how quickly a car moves.

No accessible measured acceleration result establishes which of these two automatics is quicker. A 2023 Autocar India direct comparison offers dated, subjective driving impressions: it described stronger high-rev engine response from the City and discussed comfort and ride character. Those observations are useful as historical context, not as a current equipment comparison or a substitute for a back-to-back drive: Autocar India’s 2023 comparison.
What changes if you consider the Verna Turbo?
The Verna 1.5 Turbo GDi makes 160 PS at 5,500 rpm and 253 Nm from 1,500–3,500 rpm, according to Hyundai India, and is paired with a seven-speed DCT. Its published output is substantially higher, but comparing it with the City CVT changes both engine and transmission category; it does not answer which naturally aspirated automatic is the better match.

Which one gives better mileage?
Autocar India’s 2026 mileage comparison lists claimed figures of 19.6 km/l for the Verna and 17.97 km/l for the City. Honda also lists 17.97 km/l as the City petrol CVT’s claimed efficiency on its specification page. The accessible Autocar result does not show measured real-world test figures, so these published claims do not establish which car will use less fuel in your driving.

How do price and equipment compare at the top trims?
Autocar India’s 2026 top-trim comparison reports an ex-showroom price of ₹17.15 lakh for both the Honda City ZX+ CVT and Hyundai Verna HX10 CVT. These are time-sensitive ex-showroom figures, not on-road quotes; local taxes, insurance and dealer charges affect the amount payable. See Autocar India’s 2026 comparison for the cited trim comparison.

|---|---|---|
| 360-degree camera | Listed | Listed |

| Airbags | Seven | Six |
| Front parking sensors | Listed | Not listed |
| Disc brakes | Front and rear | Front discs on petrol City; rear discs are the e:HEV exception |
| ADAS features | More features than City in this comparison | Fewer features than Verna in this comparison |
These are top-trim-specific findings from that publication’s 2026 comparison. Equipment can differ by variant and model update, so confirm the exact equipment matrix for the car you intend to buy. Autocar India judged the Verna the more sensible choice in its top-trim value comparison, citing equipment; that is its assessment, not a universal verdict for every buyer.

How to decide between them
- Prioritise published naturally aspirated output: the City has a small stated advantage, but the figures do not establish quicker acceleration.
- Prioritise claimed efficiency: the cited comparison lists a higher claim for the Verna, but does not provide accessible measured results to settle real-world economy.
- Compare actual trim value: the two cited top trims share a reported ex-showroom price, while the Verna has several listed equipment advantages in that comparison.
- Check your own drive: test both automatics on similar roads and in similar traffic, paying attention to response, ride comfort and the way each transmission behaves at the speeds you use most.
