Introduced alongside the 429 in the late-1960s, it replaced the FE family’s role in Ford’s large cars and performance strategy, powered everything from full-size passenger cars to trucks, and became the basis for Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet and Boss competition engines. Modern Ford products also wear the 460 name, but the current Z460 is a Boss 351/Windsor-based small-block rather than the original Lima big-block.
What the Ford 460 engine is
Ford Racing describes the 460 as “a stroked version of the 429.” That makes it part of the same 385-series architecture, not an unrelated replacement engine. The original 460 is a large, heavy passenger-car wedge engine with a hydraulic cam, two-bolt main caps in its basic form, and two- or four-barrel carburetion.

The 429 and 460 took over the large-displacement Ford and Mercury role previously associated with the FE family. Their greater size and weight suited full-size cars, later trucks and towing work, while the same basic architecture gave Ford a platform for short-lived factory competition programs.

1968: the 385-series arrives
Ford introduced the 429 Thunder Jet in 1968, and historical coverage places the 460’s introduction in the same 385-series launch period. The new family was physically larger and heavier than the FE engines it displaced in Ford’s strategy.

1969–1971: the factory performance window
Ford’s official history describes the high-performance 429/460 era as brief, running from 1969 through 1971. During that period Ford offered Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet and Boss derivatives aimed at street performance and competition rather than ordinary passenger-car duty.
1968–1972: rail rockers and positive-stop studs
Base 429 and 460 engines from 1968 through 1972 used cast-iron rail rocker arms on non-adjustable, positive-stop studs. This is a useful dividing line when comparing early engines with later production hardware.
1973 onward: pedestal-mounted rockers
Ford Racing records pedestal-mount rocker arms on 429/460 engines from 1973 and later. A rocker-mounting change alone does not identify every internal component, but it is an important era marker when inspecting an engine or choosing valvetrain parts.

1972–1996: the catalog dimension era
Ford Performance’s 2020 catalog lists the 460/460 Ford Performance series through 1996 and gives a 10.322-inch deck height for 1972–1996 applications. That catalog span is a dimensional reference, not a complete model-by-model vehicle-production list.

Today: the name survives in performance products
Ford still sells 460-labeled performance hardware, including a Lima-based Siamese-bore block and a separate Boss-based Z460 crate engine. Their shared displacement name does not mean they share the same block architecture.
Original 460 specifications and architecture
The following figures are Ford Performance catalog dimensions for the 460/460 Ford Performance series; the 10.322-inch deck figure is listed for 1972–1996 applications.
| Specification | Ford catalog value |
|---|---|
| Displacement | 460 cubic inches |
| Bore | 4.360 inches |
| Stroke | 3.850 inches |
| Cylinder spacing | 4.900 inches |
| Main journal diameter | 3.000 inches |
| Rod journal diameter | 2.500 inches |
| Connecting-rod length | 6.605 inches |
| Deck height | 10.322 inches for the listed 1972–1996 applications |
| Basic production layout | Passenger-car wedge, hydraulic cam, two-bolt mains, two- or four-barrel carburetion |
The 460’s larger displacement came from the 429 family’s longer stroke. In practical terms, the 460 should be treated as a Lima 385-series big-block when selecting machining dimensions, rotating parts, intake and exhaust components, or valvetrain hardware.

The most important distinction is displacement geometry: Ford’s own description identifies the 460 as the 429’s stroked version. They belong to the same family, but the 460 delivers its extra displacement through stroke rather than an entirely new block design.

Because the two engines share the 385-series identity, “429 versus 460” is not the same question as “FE versus Lima.” The latter compares different Ford big-block families; the former compares displacements within one family.
Factory performance versions
Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet
Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet engines strengthened the basic 429/460 package for high-performance use. Ford’s history identifies the Super Cobra Jet with four-bolt main caps, a mechanical camshaft, adjustable rocker studs, stamped rocker arms, guide plates and forged-aluminum pistons.
Boss 429
The Boss 429 used specialized aluminum cylinder heads and crescent-shaped combustion chambers. Ford’s history distinguishes early NASCAR engines as “S” engines and later street versions as “T” engines. Those Boss engines are historically important 429 derivatives; they should not be confused with today’s Boss-based Z460 product.

Ford Racing characterizes the factory-ready high-performance 429/460 competition period as 1969–1971. Where the 460 was used
The engine’s production identity changed over time. It began as a large Ford and Mercury passenger-car engine, then became increasingly associated with large Ford and Lincoln cars, trucks, towing and aftermarket performance as the 1970s progressed.
No single authoritative model-by-model application table accompanies the core Ford documentation, so a reliable history should not present an exhaustive vehicle list without additional archival verification. A used engine’s exact application still matters: main-cap design, rocker arrangement, camshaft type and emissions-era equipment can vary even within the broad 460 name.

There is no universal “best year” established by the documented history. Choose by the feature or use case you need:
- 1969–1971: the period to investigate for factory Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet and Boss performance derivatives.
- 1968–1972: engines with the documented cast-iron rail-rocker and positive-stop-stud arrangement.
- 1973 and later: engines using the documented pedestal-mount rocker arrangement.
- Truck, towing or rebuild projects: verify the exact casting, main-cap configuration, valvetrain and intended service rather than choosing by year alone.
Factory horsepower figures are not presented here as a year-by-year ranking because the official material does not provide a complete, definitive rating timeline for every 460 application.

Modern Ford products that use the 460 name
460 Siamese Bore block (M6010A460X)
Ford Performance continues to list a Lima-based 460 Siamese Bore competition block. It has a 10.322-inch deck, four-bolt main caps on journals 2, 3 and 4, and a stated 4.360–4.600-inch bore range. Ford says the block can be bored or stroked to as much as 598 cubic inches.
“Siamese bore” means the casting has solid material between adjacent bores instead of water passages there. Ford’s stated reason is increased block strength, a feature aimed at high-load competition combinations and machining-intensive builds.
Z460 crate engine
The Z460 is a different engine entirely. Ford rates it at 575 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque and bases it on the Boss 351 9.5-inch-deck small-block architecture, with a 4.150-inch bore and 4.250-inch stroke. Its 460 label refers to displacement, not the original Lima big-block family.

Do not substitute a Z460 parts list for a Lima 460 rebuild. The products carry the same displacement name but differ in deck height, block family, dimensions and intended installation.
Why the Lima 460 still matters
The original 460 combined a long-stroke big-block layout with a production path that reached passenger cars, trucks and towing work, then supported serious aftermarket competition. Its historical significance rests on that combination: a common 385-series foundation that could serve as a street engine, a factory performance package or the starting point for specialized racing development.
When researching or buying one today, identify the architecture first. A genuine Lima 460 belongs to the 385-series big-block family; a modern Z460 is a Boss/Windsor-based small-block. Keeping those two meanings separate prevents incorrect parts orders, misleading specifications and false comparisons between historical factory engines and a modern crate-engine rating.
