High-Performance Pickup vs. Sports Car: Which Is Quicker in Real-World Driving?

A few tested pickups are exceptionally quick in a straight line. But without a matched pickup-versus-sports-car test, the answer depends on the vehicles and the kind of quickness you mean.

There is no evidence-based category-wide winner. A few high-performance pickups have posted exceptionally quick acceleration times, but the available tests do not compare a named pickup and a named sports car under the same conditions. The answer depends on the specific vehicles and on whether “quicker” means a hard launch, a rolling pass, or performance through braking zones and turns.

What the available tests can—and cannot—tell you

Published instrumented results show that some performance pickups are very fast in a straight line. Car and Driver’s March 2024 test of a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Beast recorded 2.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and an 11.0-second quarter-mile at 119 mph. Those numbers establish that this particular truck can accelerate rapidly; they do not establish that pickups are quicker than sports cars.

The distinction matters because “pickup” and “sports car” describe broad types, not matched test entries. Individual vehicles can differ in powertrain, tires, weight, drive mode and intended use. A result for one truck cannot settle a comparison with every sports car, or even with one particular sports car whose test conditions differ.

The reviewed articles provide tests of individual pickups and a pickup-versus-pickup comparison, but no directly comparable instrumented test of a named high-performance pickup against a named sports car. So a fair verdict is conditional: the cited trucks demonstrate startling straight-line speed, while the evidence here does not rank the two vehicle categories against each other.

That limitation is important even when one result appears dramatic. The Cybertruck Beast’s 2.6-second 0-to-60 time is a measured result for that truck in Car and Driver’s test, not a general threshold separating pickups from sports cars. To make a head-to-head claim, you would need a named sports car tested with a sufficiently comparable method and conditions. Without that counterpart, comparing a truck’s number with an unrelated car test could make the difference appear larger or smaller than it really is.

How quick are the tested pickups?

The figures below come from separate tests, years and publications. They are useful examples of pickup performance, not a single controlled ranking. A dash in a test’s result is not implied where a figure is absent: only reported values are included.

Vehicle and test 0–60 mph Quarter-mile Rolling acceleration
2024 Tesla Cybertruck Beast, Car and Driver, 2024 2.6 seconds 11.0 seconds at 119 mph 5–60 mph: 2.8 seconds; 30–50 mph: 1.5 seconds in Sport mode; 50–70 mph: 1.8 seconds in Sport mode
2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R, Car and Driver, 2022 3.6 seconds 12.0 seconds at 112 mph 5–60 mph: 4.1 seconds; 50–70 mph: 2.7 seconds
2021 Ram 1500 TRX, Car and Driver, 2020 3.7 seconds 12.3 seconds at 110 mph Not reported in the cited figures

These records make the central point concrete: a pickup can be exceptionally quick from a standing start. But they are not sports-car comparisons. The Cybertruck result is from 2024, while the Raptor R and TRX results are from earlier model years and tests; mixing them does not create a same-day, same-method head-to-head ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The table also shows why it is useful to keep the whole reported result together. For example, the quarter-mile entry includes both elapsed time and terminal speed: the Cybertruck Beast’s run was 11.0 seconds at 119 mph, while Car and Driver recorded 12.0 seconds at 112 mph for the Raptor R and 12.3 seconds at 110 mph for the TRX in their respective tests. Those are useful pieces of context about each run, but they do not transform results collected in separate tests into a controlled comparison.

There are two different Raptor R figures in the cited coverage that should not be blended. Car and Driver’s individual test reported 3.6 seconds to 60 mph and 12.0 seconds at 112 mph in the quarter-mile. MotorTrend’s 2023 comparison reported 3.7 seconds to 60 mph and a 12.1-second quarter-mile for the Raptor R. Each set should remain attached to its publication and test context; neither is a sports-car result.

Why a launch is not the whole answer

Standing-start acceleration

A 0-to-60-mph time answers a narrow question: how quickly a vehicle accelerates from a stop to 60 mph in that test. Quarter-mile elapsed time adds another straight-line measure, and the speed at the end gives additional context about the run. Neither figure describes cornering, braking, a pass from cruising speed, or the way the vehicle behaves in ordinary traffic.

Launch method can change a result. Car and Driver’s Raptor R article discusses the importance of the launch procedure, and its results table says the figures omit the one-foot rollout. That qualification is part of the measurement, not a detail to discard when comparing the number with a test that may use a different convention. A direct comparison is strongest when both vehicles were measured with the same rollout rule and comparable procedures.

For a reader, the practical implication is straightforward: before comparing two 0-to-60 figures, check the test notes, not just the headline number. If one result omits a one-foot rollout and another result uses a different convention, the pair is not a clean apples-to-apples measure. The cited sources do not provide a correction factor for converting one result to another, so it would be misleading to adjust either time by an assumed amount.

A quarter-mile result has the same need for context. Elapsed time is one part of the run, while terminal speed is another reported measure. The Cybertruck Beast’s 11.0 seconds at 119 mph, for instance, should be reported as Car and Driver’s test result, not as proof of how it would fare against a sports car in a different test or at a different point in a run.

Rolling starts and passing acceleration

A rolling-start test begins with the vehicle already moving. The Raptor R’s 4.1-second 5-to-60-mph time and 2.7-second 50-to-70-mph time answer different questions from its 3.6-second 0-to-60 result. The Cybertruck Beast likewise has a reported 2.8-second 5-to-60-mph result, plus Sport-mode results of 1.5 seconds from 30 to 50 mph and 1.8 seconds from 50 to 70 mph.

Those measurements should not be collapsed into a single claim about “quickness.” A driver interested in acceleration after joining a road or while passing should look for a test that starts at a rolling speed close to the situation they care about. The cited Sport-mode Cybertruck figures also carry their mode qualification; they are not unqualified results for every drive setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even the two rolling measures listed for a vehicle do not mean the same thing. A 5-to-60-mph time begins near a stop and measures acceleration through a broad speed range; a 50-to-70-mph result focuses on a pass from an already moving speed. The Cybertruck Beast’s reported 2.8-second 5-to-60 time and 1.8-second 50-to-70 time in Sport mode therefore should not be compared as if they were alternative measurements of one identical maneuver. Likewise, the Raptor R’s 4.1-second 5-to-60 and 2.7-second 50-to-70 times describe separate test intervals.

Mode matters when it is specified. Car and Driver labels the Cybertruck Beast’s 30-to-50 and 50-to-70 figures as Sport-mode results. Preserve that label when quoting them. The cited figures do not establish how much the mode changes the times compared with another setting, so there is no sound basis here for estimating a mode adjustment.

What the pickup-versus-pickup comparison shows

MotorTrend’s 2023 comparison of the Ford F-150 Raptor R and Ram 1500 TRX offers a useful example of how a like-for-like matchup can look. In that comparison, the Raptor R recorded 3.7 seconds to 60 mph versus 3.9 seconds for the TRX, and 12.1 versus 12.5 seconds in the quarter-mile. The trucks recorded 1.9 versus 2.1 seconds from 45 to 65 mph, respectively.

MotorTrend comparison measure, 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Ram 1500 TRX
0–60 mph 3.7 seconds 3.9 seconds
Quarter-mile 12.1 seconds 12.5 seconds
45–65 mph 1.9 seconds 2.1 seconds
Lateral acceleration 0.68 g 0.67 g

This is evidence about those two pickups in that comparison—not sports-car data and not a universal ordering of trucks. The Raptor R’s 0-to-60 result here is also different from Car and Driver’s 3.6-second result for its Raptor R test. That is a reminder to keep publication and test context attached to a figure rather than treating every published time as though it came from one standardized session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MotorTrend figures illustrate what a more disciplined comparison can add: both named trucks appear in one comparison, and the publication reports more than a standing-start time. Within that comparison, the Raptor R’s listed times are quicker than the TRX’s across 0-to-60, quarter-mile and 45-to-65 mph, while the lateral-acceleration figures are close, at 0.68 g and 0.67 g. These observations describe the results reported in that particular matchup. They should not be stretched into a claim that one model is always quicker under every condition.

The separate Car and Driver TRX test provides another example, with a 3.7-second 0-to-60 time and a 12.3-second quarter-mile at 110 mph. That result differs from MotorTrend’s 3.9-second and 12.5-second figures for the TRX in the 2023 comparison. The difference is a reason to cite the outlet and context alongside the number, not an invitation to choose whichever result best supports a preferred ranking.

What “real-world driving” should include

If you mean acceleration on a straight road, choose the metric that matches the situation: a standing-start figure for a launch, or a rolling-start figure for a pass. If you mean overall pace on a route with turns and braking zones, acceleration alone cannot answer the question. A complete comparison would need comparable braking and cornering data as well.

MotorTrend’s pickup comparison illustrates the distinction by reporting lateral acceleration alongside acceleration times. Its reported 0.68 g for the Raptor R and 0.67 g for the TRX add a cornering-related measure to that truck-versus-truck test. These figures still cannot be used to infer how either pickup compares with a sports car: there is no corresponding sports-car test in the cited results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Braking belongs in an all-around assessment too. The cited MotorTrend comparison reports braking data as well as lateral acceleration, illustrating that published vehicle tests can measure more than acceleration. The figures available here do not supply a pickup-versus-sports-car braking comparison, so they cannot support a conclusion about which type stops more quickly. If a reader’s idea of “quicker” is pace across a route with repeated slowdowns and turns, a single launch time leaves out important parts of the question.

“Real-world” also needs care as a label. The cited figures are published instrumented test results. They offer measured ways to compare acceleration and other performance attributes, but the available information does not establish that these figures represent everyday traffic, every road surface, or every driver’s experience. Avoid translating a test result into a promise about how a vehicle will behave in a particular street situation.

In practice, define the use case before collecting numbers. A reader asking about a brief launch is asking for a different comparison than someone asking about a pass from 50 to 70 mph. Someone asking which vehicle would make better time on a route with corners also needs braking and cornering measures, and those measures must come from comparable tests to support a direct verdict. These distinctions are not technicalities: they determine which published number answers the question at all.

How to make a fair pickup-and-sports-car comparison

  1. Name the vehicles. Pick a specific high-performance pickup and a specific sports car, preferably from a similar model-year window. A comparison between broad categories is too vague to produce a meaningful winner.
  2. Use matched tests where possible. Prefer figures from the same publication and test methodology. If tests come from different sources, treat them as separate evidence and disclose that they may not be directly comparable.
  3. Match the measure to the question. Compare 0-to-60 and quarter-mile figures for standing-start acceleration. Use a rolling-start or passing figure for acceleration from speed. Do not substitute one type of result for another.
  4. Keep test conventions attached to the number. Record whether times include a one-foot rollout. Car and Driver explicitly says its Raptor R results omit the rollout, so that caveat belongs with those figures.
  5. Note the test configuration. Where the source provides them, record tires, drive mode, launch method, surface and any speed limiter. Car and Driver’s Raptor R discussion identifies its launch procedure, all-terrain tires, mass and 114-mph speed limiter as relevant to interpreting the test.
  6. Expand beyond acceleration if the question is overall pace. Look for comparable braking and cornering measures as well as straight-line times. Do not treat one vehicle’s data, or a pickup-only comparison, as a substitute for a matched sports-car test.

For a practical comparison, keep a small record for each result: exact model and model year, publication and test date, test type, time or distance measured, drive mode if listed, launch procedure, tire description, rollout convention and any stated speed limit. This helps prevent two common errors: pairing numbers from unlike test procedures, and repeating a result without its qualification. The Raptor R material shows why those details matter: Car and Driver discusses its launch procedure, all-terrain tires, mass and 114-mph limiter, while its table also specifies that the results omit the one-foot rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then sort the evidence by question instead of putting every number in one column called “quickness.” Keep standing-start results together, rolling-start and passing results together, and braking or cornering measures in their own group. That presentation lets readers see what a time actually measures. It also avoids an unsupported overall score assembled from unrelated tests or from figures that the sources do not present as directly comparable.

How to read the Raptor R test details

Car and Driver’s Raptor R discussion is a useful example of why a fast headline time needs context. Its 3.6-second 0-to-60 result sits alongside a 4.1-second 5-to-60 result, a 2.7-second 50-to-70 result and a quarter-mile run of 12.0 seconds at 112 mph. Each measures a different part of acceleration, and none should be taken alone as a full description of performance.

The article also discusses the truck’s launch procedure, all-terrain tires, mass and 114-mph speed limiter. Those details help explain what the test measures and where the result is bounded. In particular, a speed limiter can affect performance at higher speeds; it does not erase the reported low-speed acceleration, but it matters when interpreting the full run. The one-foot-rollout qualification belongs with the reported acceleration numbers whenever they are compared with results using another convention.

The test’s 5-to-60 result is slower than its 0-to-60 result, but these are distinct procedures, not contradictory versions of the same measurement. The reported values should be presented as they are, with the test type named. Similarly, the 50-to-70 passing time focuses on acceleration over that interval; it does not describe the whole quarter-mile run. Naming the interval is essential when using the result to answer a reader’s particular question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test conditions and configuration should not be used to invent a correction factor. The available figures do not quantify how much time any one factor adds or subtracts, and they do not provide a matched sports-car test from which to calculate a gap. The useful practice is to preserve those qualifications, not to estimate an unreported adjustment.

Which answer fits your question?

  • “Can a pickup launch very quickly?” Yes. The tested Cybertruck Beast reached 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, and the cited Raptor R and TRX tests also recorded sub-four-second 0-to-60 times.
  • “Is a pickup quicker than a sports car?” The cited evidence cannot establish that. It contains no directly comparable instrumented test pairing a named pickup with a named sports car.
  • “Which one would feel quicker in a pass?” Compare rolling-start or passing results measured in a relevant speed range, with drive mode and other test conditions noted. The available pickup figures illustrate those measures, but do not provide a sports-car counterpart.
  • “Which is quicker through a demanding road or track section?” Straight-line times are insufficient. You would need comparable braking and cornering data, and the cited pickup-only results do not settle a truck-versus-sports-car outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a high-performance pickup really reach 60 mph in less than three seconds?

One tested pickup did: Car and Driver recorded 2.6 seconds for the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Beast. That is a result for that truck and test, not evidence that pickups as a class are quicker than sports cars.

Which is quicker from a rolling start: a pickup or a sports car?

The cited results do not include a directly comparable pickup-and-sports-car test. Compare the same rolling speed interval, ideally from the same publication and with drive mode and test conditions noted.

Why do published 0-to-60 times for the same pickup differ?

Different publications and test sessions can report different results. For example, Car and Driver recorded 3.6 seconds for the Raptor R, while MotorTrend reported 3.7 seconds in its 2023 comparison. Keep each number attached to its source and test context; the cited figures do not supply a conversion or correction factor.

Does a quick quarter-mile time mean a vehicle is quicker through turns?

No. A quarter-mile measures straight-line acceleration. To compare pace through turns and braking zones, look for comparable cornering and braking data as well. The MotorTrend Raptor R–TRX comparison reports lateral acceleration and braking measures, but it is not a sports-car comparison.

What should I check before comparing acceleration tests?

Confirm the exact vehicles and model years, whether the result is a standing or rolling start, test methodology and rollout convention, and any listed mode, tires, launch procedure or speed limiter. Car and Driver says its Raptor R results omit the one-foot rollout and discusses several other factors relevant to interpreting that test.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Some tested pickups are exceptionally quick in a straight line: Car and Driver measured the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Beast at 2.6 seconds to 60 mph, while its Raptor R and TRX tests also recorded sub-four-second times. But the cited sources do not provide a matched instrumented test against a named sports car, so they cannot establish which vehicle category is quicker. Name the models, match the test method and decide whether you mean a launch, a rolling pass or performance through turns and braking zones.
