A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) does not charge from an external power source; a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) does; and a battery electric vehicle (BEV) plugs in but has no combustion engine. “Mild,” “full,” “series,” and “parallel” describe different aspects of hybrid design, not alternative names for those three categories.
What is the difference between an HEV, PHEV, and BEV?
The labels mainly distinguish how a vehicle is powered and charged. The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (DOE AFDC) defines the categories as follows:
| Designation | Internal combustion engine? | Charges from an external source? | How it is propelled |
|---|---|---|---|
| HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) | Yes | No | Uses an engine and electric motor; the battery is charged through regenerative braking. |
| PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) | Yes | Yes | Uses an engine and electric motor; it can operate in electric mode before switching to hybrid operation. |
| BEV (battery electric vehicle) | No | Yes | Uses battery-electric propulsion. |
These descriptions follow the DOE AFDC’s hybrid vehicle explanations and its definitions of electric vehicle types.
Do hybrid cars need to be plugged in?
An HEV does not plug in to charge its battery. The DOE AFDC states, “An HEV cannot plug in to off-board sources of electricity to charge the battery.” Instead, regenerative braking captures energy that would normally be lost during braking and stores it in the battery. A PHEV can charge from an external electricity supply, as can a BEV.
#1 Best Overall
- V8 POWER: The model features a 400 cubic inch V8 engine, reflecting the muscle and power that defined the GTO's reputation.
- DETAILED SUSPENSION & EXHAUST: The kit incorporates separate rear suspension and exhaust detailing, adding to the realism of the model.
- BUCKET SEATS & CONSOLE: The model's interior features bucket seats and a floor shifter with a console, capturing the iconic look and feel of the GTO.
- OPTIONAL SUPERCHARGER: For those seeking more power, the kit offers an optional supercharger, allowing you to customize your model.
- CLEAR & COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS: The included instructions are clear and user-friendly, making the kit accessible to modelers of different skill levels, from beginners to experienced hobbyists.
So a battery and electric motor alone do not make a hybrid a plug-in vehicle. The word “plug-in” in PHEV is the direct clue to external charging.
What does mild hybrid mean?
“Mild” and “full” describe what the electric motor can do in an HEV, rather than whether the vehicle plugs in. According to the DOE AFDC, a mild hybrid cannot propel the vehicle using electricity alone. A full hybrid can provide electric propulsion for short distances or at low speeds.

- AUTHENTIC INTERIOR DESIGN - Detailed cockpit with sport bucket seats and driver-focused layout, inspired by the real Revuelto’s aerospace-style interior.
These are useful explanatory descriptors, but they should not be treated as universal formal classes. A DOE-hosted presentation on SAE J1715 terminology records that early discussions decided “strong, full, mild” would not be part of SAE hybrid terminology. The specific electric-propulsion capability is more informative than the label alone.
What do series and parallel hybrid mean?
“Series” and “parallel” describe how engine and motor power reach the wheels. They are a separate design axis from HEV versus PHEV: those labels tell you whether the vehicle has an engine and whether it can plug in, while series and parallel describe power flow.

In everyday conversation, “electric car” or “electric vehicle” may be used broadly for HEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs. That shorthand can obscure an important difference: an HEV still relies on liquid fuel and cannot be charged from an external source. For clarity, specify BEV, PHEV, or non-plug-in HEV rather than using “EV” alone. The DOE AFDC discusses this broader colloquial usage in its electric vehicle terminology.

The terms also do not all sit on one classification scale. HEV, PHEV, and BEV identify broad powertrain and charging categories; mild and full describe electric-only propulsion capability within hybrid designs; series and parallel describe how power is delivered. Treating them as competing names for the same thing is what makes the terminology confusing.

A three-question test for any vehicle designation
- Can it charge from an external electricity supply? If no, it is not a plug-in vehicle. If yes, it could be a PHEV or BEV.
- Does it have an internal combustion engine? A PHEV has one; a BEV does not. An HEV also has an engine, but does not plug in.
- Can the electric motor propel the vehicle by itself, and how does power reach the wheels? The first answer distinguishes mild from full hybrid capability; the second identifies series or parallel architecture.
