If you never change transmission fluid when your vehicle’s maintenance schedule calls for it, the fluid can become less able to transfer power, operate gear changes, lubricate parts and carry heat away. That raises the risk of shifting problems and transmission damage over time—but it does not mean every neglected transmission will fail, and there is no universal mileage or timetable for failure. The right service interval depends on the vehicle, transmission and driving conditions.
What transmission fluid does—and what neglect can do
Transmission fluid does more than lubricate. Nissan says it helps transmit engine power, enables gear changes through hydraulic pressure, lubricates internal components and dissipates heat. Nissan also notes that heat and contaminants can affect the fluid’s ability to perform those jobs over time. Nissan’s 2024 Pathfinder maintenance guidance describes those functions for that model.
If fluid is left in service beyond the interval specified for your vehicle, its performance may be affected. That can contribute to shifting problems and transmission damage. It is a developing risk, not an instant or guaranteed failure: the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a fixed mileage at which an unserviced transmission will fail or quantify the likelihood of failure.
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
Use the maintenance schedule for your exact model year, make, model, transmission and market, and follow any instructions for how you drive. There is no defensible universal “every X miles” interval that applies to all vehicles. Automatic transmissions, CVTs, manual transmissions and hybrid transaxles may have different specifications and service directions.

#1 Best Overall
- For use in 95% of vehicles including most CVTs in operation with US registered light duty applications
- High performance conditioning agents prolong seal elasticity to prevent leaks
- Improved durability & transmission life with anti-wear technology to avoid costly repairs
- Enhanced high & low temp performance supports transmission fluid in all weather situations
- Full synthetic formula with advanced additives protects against transmission breakdown better than conventional fluids
For example, Toyota’s 2025 Crown Warranty and Maintenance Guide includes transmission-fluid replacement under specified special operating conditions. Its guidance illustrates why the schedule’s footnotes and driving-condition categories matter; it is not a prescription for other vehicles. Some schedules call for inspection or replacement at particular intervals rather than automatic replacement at one generic mileage.
Nissan’s online schedule lists 90,000 miles or 108 months for automatic-transmission-fluid service on the 2024 Nissan Pathfinder. That figure applies to that vehicle’s published schedule, not to transmission fluid generally. Check your own manual or manufacturer maintenance guide for the applicable requirement.

Use the fluid specified for your transmission
“Transmission fluid” is not one interchangeable product category. The fluid type depends on the particular vehicle and transmission. Check the owner’s manual or maintenance data for the exact specification before buying fluid or authorizing service.
Toyota’s vehicle-specific data demonstrates the differences: the 2024 RAV4 maintenance data specifies Toyota Genuine ATF WS for the applicable automatic transmission, while the 2020 Corolla maintenance data lists specifications for its CVT and manual transmissions. Those examples do not establish what another model requires. Toyota warns in the 2024 RAV4 manual that using a fluid other than the specified type may cause abnormal noise or vibration, or damage that vehicle’s transmission.

Do not treat additives or cleaners as a substitute for scheduled service. Ford cautions that supplemental transmission-fluid additives, treatments or cleaning agents may affect operation and damage internal transmission components. See its automatic-transmission fluid guidance, and consult the manual for your specific vehicle.
Signs that call for an inspection
Slipping, slow shifting or signs of a fluid leak are reasons to check the situation promptly, not proof that overdue fluid is the cause. Ford identifies these as reasons to check fluid level, but transmission symptoms can have multiple causes.

- Backward compatible with previous Dexron automatic transmission fluids and can be used as a much-improved replacement for older vehicles/transmissions originally using previous Dexron fluids
- Improved performance over previous Dexron fluids in: friction durability, viscosity stability, aeration and foam control, and oxidation resistance
- Potential to enable improved fuel economy and longer transmission life
- Provides for extended drain intervals. Provides consistent shift performance, even in extreme conditions.
- Slipping: the vehicle may not respond as expected when it changes gears.
- Slow shifting: gear changes may take longer than usual.
- Possible leakage: have the source and fluid level checked rather than assuming a fluid change will solve it.
Fluid-level checks are vehicle-specific. Some transmissions have no dipstick, and others require a particular temperature or procedure. Follow the manual’s instructions; if the vehicle has symptoms, a warning, a suspected leak or an unknown service history, consult a qualified technician. A fluid change may be due maintenance, but it cannot be assumed to reverse existing wear or repair a transmission problem.

Not by itself. Hyundai says automatic transmission fluid normally darkens with use and that color change alone does not mean it needs replacement. Use the vehicle’s maintenance schedule and inspection guidance rather than treating color as a service interval. See Hyundai’s automatic transmission fluid guidance.
