A factory-owned Hennessey Venom F5 prototype crashed during straight-line testing at Kennedy Space Center on July 1, 2024. Hennessey founder John Hennessey said the car was accelerating toward 250 mph when it lost downforce; the public incident worksheet described the cause as unknown, and no verified crash speed was reported.

What happened in the Venom F5 crash?

News 6 (WKMG-TV/ClickOrlando) identified the car as a Hennessey Venom F5 prototype through records obtained from Space Florida. The crash occurred during straight-line testing at the Launch and Landing Facility (LLF), the former Shuttle Landing Facility runway at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. News 6’s account, published August 12 and updated August 13, 2024, said the car landed upside down.

The report said the test driver got out and was okay; Hennessey later said the driver walked away without injury. The car was recovered and loaded onto its trailer. News 6 also reported minor runway damage, including three areas of spalling noted for later repair. The incident records and crash images were heavily redacted, limiting what can be independently established about how the crash unfolded.

How fast was it going when it crashed?

The available report does not establish a verified impact or crash speed. John Hennessey said the prototype was accelerating toward 250 mph when it lost downforce. The “250 MPH+” framing should therefore not be read as confirmation that the car had exceeded 250 mph at impact.

Hennessey’s statement, as quoted by News 6, was: “The prototype Venom F5 performed strongly accelerating from 0-250 mph in just under 4,000 ft. when the vehicle lost downforce on the runway causing the driver to lose control,” The quoted account describes the acceleration and Hennessey’s explanation, not an independently verified crash-speed measurement.

What caused the crash?

Hennessey attributed the loss of control to lost downforce while the team was testing an experimental aerodynamic setup. That is the company founder’s account, not a confirmed finding. The incident worksheet listed the cause as “unknown – company investigating and evaluating mechanical failures and or causes.” The public information reported by News 6 does not resolve whether the setup, a mechanical failure, or another factor caused the crash.

Space Florida spokesperson Alayna Curry told News 6: “Documents related to this incident include redactions that are considered proprietary business information per Florida statue 288.075.” Those redactions, along with the worksheet’s unresolved cause, leave the public record short of a definitive reconstruction.

How the crash speed differs from other Venom F5 test figures

Several other published Venom F5 speed figures refer to different tests and cannot be used to infer how fast the prototype was moving when it crashed.

Figure What it describes Source and context
Heading toward 250 mph Hennessey’s account of the prototype’s acceleration before it lost control; not a verified impact speed. John Hennessey, quoted by News 6 in 2024.
271.6 mph A development-test figure reported by the manufacturer in 2022, separate from the crash run. Hennessey Special Vehicles, March 23, 2022.
219.07 mph and 221.92 mph Standing half-mile speeds Hennessey reported for founder John Hennessey and test driver David Donohue, respectively, in separate runs. Hennessey Media, July 30, 2024.

Which Venom F5 version was involved?

The crash report describes a factory-owned prototype. Hennessey’s separate July 2024 release described the then-current F5 Coupe as powered by a 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8 called “Fury,” rated by the manufacturer at 1,817 bhp on E85 fuel, and fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. Those are manufacturer specifications for the Coupe, not a verified specification sheet for the crashed prototype. Hennessey Media’s release covers those specifications and the separate half-mile runs.

Hennessey announced the Venom F5 Evolution in April 2025, after the crash. The company described that later configuration as having revised engine elements, adaptive suspension and updated aerodynamics, and reported 2,031 bhp. Those Evolution details do not describe the 2024 crash car. Hennessey Special Vehicles’ Evolution announcement is the source for the later configuration.
