Kia’s software anti-theft update has substantially reduced theft claims for eligible vehicles, but it does not make them theft-proof. Some owners still face attempted-theft damage, and a free zinc-reinforced ignition-cylinder protector is now part of a multistate settlement remedy. If you own a 2011–2022 Kia, check your VIN and trim to find out whether your car lacks a factory engine immobilizer and which remedies apply.
What changed, and how much did the software update help?
The software update changes the vehicle’s starting logic to make the viral ignition-cylinder theft method harder to use. Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) claim data indicate that it helped, but the results describe groups of insured vehicles—not the odds that a particular Kia will be stolen.

HLDI’s May 2025 bulletin analyzed 2011–2022 Hyundai and Kia vehicles using 2023–2024 insurance claims. Its reported comparisons were:

HLDI also reported that by December 2024, theft-claim frequency for VINs eligible for an upgrade had fallen from mid-2023 peaks by 68% for Kia and 71% for Hyundai. Even after those declines, the rates remained nearly 10 Kia claims and 11 Hyundai claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years. Those are claim-frequency rates for the studied vehicles, not a count of stolen cars or a prediction for an individual owner.

An earlier 2024 report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), drawing on vehicles upgraded by December 2023, reported lower theft and whole-vehicle theft claim frequencies as well. IIHS cautioned that theft remained elevated and that the software-based immobilizer activates only when the vehicle is locked with its key fob.
Why were some Kia vehicles vulnerable?
Many U.S.-market 2011–2022 Kia and Hyundai vehicles were sold without electronic engine immobilizers. An immobilizer checks for the vehicle’s coded smart key before allowing the engine to start; without one, the viral theft method could exploit the exposed ignition cylinder.

A 2025 Wisconsin Department of Justice release, citing an underlying report, said that 26% of Kia and Hyundai vehicles sold in the United States in 2015 had engine immobilizers, compared with 96% of vehicles from other manufacturers. The release said thefts rose drastically from 2020 through 2023. These figures describe vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2015; they should not be read as the equipment rate for every Kia model year or trim.

That national total is not a Kia-specific theft rate and does not show how many thefts involved this particular vulnerability.

Software update versus the zinc ignition-cylinder protector
The two remedies address different parts of the problem. The software update changes how the vehicle starts; the protector is a hardware barrier around the ignition cylinder. The settlement adds the protector even for some vehicles that had previously been eligible only for software.

Wisconsin’s 2025 release records the states’ position that the software update could be bypassed. The protector matters because it addresses the ignition-cylinder attack physically rather than relying only on revised starting logic. Neither remedy should be treated as a promise that a vehicle cannot be targeted.

Which Kia models are affected?
The settlement’s eligibility description covers 2011–2022 Kia vehicles that were not equipped with a factory engine immobilizer. Model year alone is not enough to determine eligibility: equipment can vary by model and trim. No reliable complete model-and-trim list is published, so owners should use the VIN rather than assume every Kia in that year range qualifies—or that none do.
- Check the VIN and trim with Kia or the settlement administrator to confirm whether the vehicle lacks a factory immobilizer and which remedies apply.
- If eligible, ask a Kia dealer to install the software update.
- When notified, schedule the free zinc-reinforced protector with an authorized Kia dealer. The one-year appointment period runs from the company’s notice, not from a universal date stated here.
What should owners do to reduce risk?
- Lock with the key fob. IIHS reported that the software-based immobilizer activates only when the vehicle is locked with the fob.
- Consider a steering-wheel lock. A visible supplemental deterrent may make the vehicle less attractive to target. NHTSA describes immobilizing-type devices as preventing thieves from bypassing the ignition and hot-wiring a vehicle. A steering-wheel lock is not a substitute for Kia’s available remedies.
- Keep records after an incident. If a theft or attempted theft happened on or after April 29, 2025, after software installation or documented scheduling, retain police, repair, and insurance records and review the settlement’s claim rules.
Can owners seek settlement compensation?
The multistate settlement announced December 16, 2025, provides up to $4.5 million in restitution for eligible consumers whose vehicles were damaged by thieves. Its FAQ says qualifying thefts or attempted thefts on or after April 29, 2025, after software installation or documented scheduling, may qualify for payments subject to the settlement’s conditions and deadlines:

- Up to $4,500 for a total loss.
- Up to $2,250 for a partial loss.

These are maximum amounts, not automatic payments. Eligibility depends on the settlement’s definitions, documentation, and deadlines. Check the settlement administrator’s current instructions before filing; keep proof of the loss, repair costs, insurance claim, and update installation or documented appointment scheduling.
What the settlement changes going forward
In addition to the free protector for eligible owners or lessees, the December 2025 settlement requires engine immobilizers on all future vehicles sold in the United States. The protector’s one-year appointment window begins with company notice, so owners should watch for that notice and act within the stated period.
