Unveiled on May 8, 2025, the Gray Ghost is the fifth motorcycle in Harley-Davidson’s Icons Motorcycle Collection. It is not a wholly new platform or a separate performance model; it is a highly finished, serialized interpretation of the current 2025 Fat Boy, with distinctive trim, a mirror-bright PVD finish, and the Milwaukee-Eight 117 powertrain and chassis updates introduced for the model year.

The Fat Boy has been part of Harley-Davidson’s identity since 1990. The original large Softail cruiser stood out with its broad proportions, solid-cast disc wheels, silver finish, and muscular design at a time when much of the motorcycle market’s attention was focused on sport bikes.

Harley-Davidson’s historical account credits the company’s styling team, led by Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz, with developing the production motorcycle. The design also drew inspiration from an earlier custom Softail-based motorcycle known as the Lowboy.
The model became even more recognizable after a Fat Boy appeared in Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991. Arnold Schwarzenegger rides the motorcycle during the film’s chase sequence, and Harley-Davidson says one of the motorcycles used in the movie is now in the Harley-Davidson Museum. That appearance helped make the Fat Boy a pop-culture reference, but Harley-Davidson’s stated reason for creating the Gray Ghost is the motorcycle’s 35th anniversary and its design history—not the film connection.
The defining feature is the Reflection finish
The Gray Ghost’s tank and fenders have a chrome-like, mirror-bright appearance called the Reflection finish. Harley-Davidson says it is produced with physical vapor deposition, or PVD, rather than conventional chrome plating.
Recommended Free Tools
In the process described by Harley-Davidson, an aluminum-alloy material is vaporized inside a vacuum chamber and deposited onto negatively charged motorcycle parts. The parts then receive a standard clear coat. The company says the Gray Ghost is the first production Harley-Davidson to use PVD on parts as large as a fuel tank and fenders.
That distinction matters. The parts should be described as having a PVD-based, chrome-like finish—not as solid chrome or chrome-plated bodywork. Harley-Davidson says the process is intended to meet corrosion-resistance standards that would not be possible with conventional chroming on components of this size.
The finish also creates a practical ownership question: cleaning products should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for the Gray Ghost. Owners should follow Harley-Davidson’s care instructions and check that any cleaner, polish, or detailing chemical is explicitly compatible with the relevant surface. A generic product marketed for chrome is not automatically proven safe for PVD.

The anniversary treatment extends well beyond the reflective bodywork. The motorcycle includes:

Engine and equipment
Power comes from Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight 117 Custom V-twin. The manufacturer rates the 117-cubic-inch engine at 101 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of peak torque. The engine uses a 2-into-2 exhaust system with individual catalysts and mufflers designed to reduce high-frequency sound while emphasizing lower frequencies.
Those are Harley-Davidson’s published figures, not independent dyno or road-test results. They establish the company’s performance claim but do not, by themselves, show how the Gray Ghost accelerates, handles, brakes, sounds, or performs in real-world fuel-economy testing.
Equipment listed by Harley-Davidson includes:
- Selectable Road, Rain, and Sport ride modes
- Redesigned monoshock suspension
- Updated 2-into-2 exhaust
- Full LED lighting
- A 7-inch LED headlamp
- LED rear stop, tail, and turn lighting
- An analog-style display with digital integration
Ride modes are intended to give the rider different electronic responses for ordinary road use, wet conditions, and more assertive riding. They do not turn the Fat Boy into a sport motorcycle; the Gray Ghost remains a low-slung, heavy cruiser whose appeal is built around torque, presence, and design.
2025 Fat Boy Gray Ghost specifications
| Specification | Published figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | Milwaukee-Eight 117 Custom V-twin |
| Displacement | 117 cubic inches |
| Peak horsepower | 101 hp |
| Peak torque | 122 lb-ft |
| Fuel economy | 49 mpg |
| Running weight | 728 lb |
| Maximum added weight | 432 lb |
| Gross vehicle weight rating | 1,160 lb |
| Fuel capacity | 5.0 gallons |
| Wheelbase | 64.2 inches |
| Overall length | 95.1 inches |
| Overall width | 36.6 inches |
| Overall height | 53.9 inches |
| Road clearance | 4.7 inches |
| Seat height | 25.9 inches laden on Harley-Davidson’s consumer product page; 26.3 inches with a 180-pound rider in the owner’s manual |
The two seat-height figures use different published measurement conventions. The 25.9-inch figure is Harley-Davidson’s laden specification on the consumer product page, while the owner’s manual gives 26.3 inches with a 180-pound rider seated on the motorcycle. They should not be treated as an unexplained specification error.
The owner’s manual identifies the Gray Ghost by model code FLSTFI. Its weight limits are important for two-up riding and touring: rider, passenger, luggage, riding equipment, and accessories must remain within the 432-pound maximum added-weight allowance and the 1,160-pound gross vehicle weight rating. That is a normal operating limit, not a Gray Ghost-specific defect.
How limited is the production run?
Harley-Davidson will produce no more than 1,990 Gray Ghost motorcycles worldwide. The number is a direct reference to 1990, the Fat Boy’s launch year. Each motorcycle is individually numbered as part of the Icons Collection.

Serialization supports the model’s collectible positioning, but limited production alone does not establish that the motorcycle will appreciate. There is no reliable basis for calling the Gray Ghost a guaranteed investment, predicting its future resale value, or describing it as the rarest Fat Boy ever made. Actual values will depend on condition, mileage, documentation, market demand, geography, and the availability of buyers.

Price, buying information, and availability
The announced U.S. MSRP and starting price were both $25,399. That is not an out-the-door price. A buyer may also pay sales tax, title and registration costs, freight, setup, documentation charges, dealer-installed accessories, financing costs, and other fees depending on the transaction and location.
The official 2025 Fat Boy Gray Ghost product information is the appropriate place to confirm the published specification, original MSRP, and any manufacturer-provided purchase or dealer-inquiry options. However, the launch materials do not establish whether a particular dealership, state, or country still has an unsold unit. Current inventory and used-market pricing require direct, location-specific verification.
Because the model was capped at 1,990 units, prospective buyers should ask a dealer for the motorcycle’s production number, title status, mileage, service records, warranty position, and any dealer-installed equipment. For a used example, inspect the reflective tank and fenders carefully for scratches, clouding, or damage and verify that the numbered Icons documentation is present.
What the Gray Ghost adds over a standard Fat Boy
The Gray Ghost shares the principal performance and technical package introduced with the 2025 Fat Boy. Its meaningful differences are the limited production, individual serialization, Reflection PVD finish, silver frame, anniversary graphics, yellow detailing, leather trim, and other commemorative elements.
That makes the buying decision less about choosing a radically faster motorcycle and more about deciding whether the design history and limited-edition treatment justify the premium over a standard Fat Boy. Buyers who want the Fat Boy’s engine, stance, and riding position can find those core traits in the regular model. Buyers drawn to the original silver-and-yellow identity and the collectible presentation are the intended audience for the Gray Ghost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For collectors who cannot buy the full-size motorcycle
The full-size Gray Ghost is a dealer-sold limited motorcycle, not a normal mass-market Amazon product. An exact current Gray Ghost scale replica was not verified in the available research. For a display shelf or gift, a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle model or related Fat Boy die-cast collectible is a more realistic search category, but shoppers should confirm the scale, licensing, manufacturer, and whether the item depicts the Gray Ghost specifically. A generic Fat Boy model should not be represented as an exact replica of this anniversary edition.

The bottom line
The Fat Boy Gray Ghost combines one of Harley-Davidson’s most recognizable designs with a manufacturing process the company had not previously used on production motorcycle fuel tanks and fenders. Its strongest argument is the connection between the 1,990-unit limit and the Fat Boy’s 1990 debut: the number, styling, and anniversary details all serve the same historical purpose.
Mechanically, however, it remains an interpretation of the 2025 Fat Boy rather than an all-new motorcycle. The Milwaukee-Eight 117, ride modes, redesigned monoshock, LED lighting, and published 101-hp and 122-lb-ft figures make it a modern Softail cruiser. The PVD bodywork and serialization are what turn that current platform into the Gray Ghost.
