These signals communicate intention; they do not give you priority or make a manoeuvre safe. Rules on when to use them vary by jurisdiction, so check the road code where you drive.
What are the hand signals for driving?
The standard driver signals use the left arm, extended from the driver’s window. UK, California and Ontario guidance describes the same three positions for conventional left-hand-drive vehicles:

These arm positions are useful to recognize, but they are not a universal statement of when a driver must signal. California describes them as an option when signal lights do not work or bright sunlight makes them hard to see. Ontario describes their use when turn signals or brake lights are not working. UK guidance presents arm signals when direction indicators are not used or when needed to reinforce indicators or stop lights.
When should a driver use a hand signal?
The answer depends on local law and the situation. For example, New South Wales guidance specifies circumstances in which drivers must hand-signal if indicators are unavailable or unclear; California and Ontario describe circumstances involving vehicle lights that fail or are difficult to see. Check the current NSW road rules guidance or the official code for your jurisdiction rather than assuming one place’s requirement applies elsewhere.

A hand signal can help communicate a planned turn, stop or lane movement, but it is not a substitute for working vehicle signals where those are required. Nor does a signal mean that other road users have seen or understood it. As the UK Highway Code explains, “Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians, of your intended actions.” Its rules also do not give anyone right of way in any circumstance. How to signal safely before moving
- Check first. Look for traffic, cyclists and pedestrians and make sure the intended movement is permitted.
- Signal clearly and in good time. Use the appropriate hand position where local rules and conditions call for it; avoid an unclear or last-second gesture.
- Check again. Do not assume anyone has noticed the signal. Confirm the space is still clear before moving.
- Move only when safe. Maintain control of the vehicle throughout the manoeuvre. An indication of intent does not create priority.
UK guidance says signals should be clear and given in good time, and New Zealand’s driver road code cautions drivers not to assume another driver has seen a signal. Ireland’s Road Safety Authority makes the same priority point: “Signals show only what you are intending to do – they never give you right of way.” UK Highway Code: signals; New Zealand Road Code: signalling; Ireland Road Safety Authority: using your indicators.

Hand signals for cyclists: the positions and rules can differ
Cycling signals are not simply the car convention applied to a bicycle. The positions and legal requirements depend on the local cycling code, and riders must also be able to keep control.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s cycling code lists three signals: extend the left arm to turn or move left; extend the right arm to turn or move right; raise the right arm with the forearm pointing upward to indicate stopping. The code requires a signal for at least three seconds before specified movements, including turning, stopping or moving laterally, but says a rider need not signal if doing so risks losing control. Its recommended sequence is to look over the shoulder, signal, check again, and then move. New Zealand Code for Cycling.

Oregon and California
Oregon’s bicycle manual describes extending the left arm for a left turn, and either extending the right arm or raising the left arm for a right turn. It advises looking behind before signalling and notes a rider may need both hands on the handlebars through the turn. California DMV guidance similarly advises signalling before turns or lane changes while keeping at least one hand on the handlebars. A road user’s arm signal tells others what that road user intends to do. Directions from police officers or other authorised traffic controllers are a separate matter: they direct traffic and should not be confused with the hand positions used by drivers.
