Verdict: The current HALO Bolt 3-in-1 (model HAL-JMP-3IN1) is a useful roadside emergency kit for many 12-volt cars. It combines a portable jump starter with a 44.4-Wh USB power bank, digital display, voltmeter, and emergency light. At the manufacturer’s listed price of $99.99 in August 2026, it makes sense for drivers who want those extras in one device. It is not a battery charger, battery maintainer, diagnostic system, tire inflator, or replacement for roadside assistance.
The name “HALO Bolt” covers several generations and configurations. This assessment applies specifically to the current Bolt 3-in-1, not automatically to the Bolt ACDC, PAL, Air, or Ultimate models.
What the HALO Bolt 3-in-1 is—and is not
The Bolt 3-in-1 is primarily a 12-volt jump starter. It supplies temporary starting assistance when a vehicle battery cannot deliver enough current to crank the engine. It can also charge USB devices and provide illumination while you work at the vehicle.
That is different from charging or repairing a battery. The Bolt will not restore a sulfated battery, fix corroded terminals, repair a failed alternator or starter, or solve a fuel-system or immobilizer problem. A car that repeatedly needs a jump should be inspected rather than continually restarted with a jump pack.

HALO’s official product page lists the 3-in-1 as compatible with 12-volt cars, trucks, and boats. It does not give a universal engine-size guarantee, so the 1,500-amp figure should not be interpreted as proof that it will start every large truck or diesel.

The manufacturer’s listed price was $99.99 on its Bolt series page when checked in August 2026; prices and availability can change. HALO’s “up to 35 jumps” figure is a claim, not a guaranteed real-world result. Starting performance depends on battery condition, engine size, temperature, connection quality, and how long the engine is cranked.
Can it start your vehicle?
It is best suited to an ordinary gasoline car, crossover, small SUV, or light truck with a conventional 12-volt battery. Before buying, verify:
- That the vehicle uses a 12-volt starting system.
- Whether it is gasoline or diesel and how large the engine is.
- Whether it has more than one battery or unusual battery-management electronics.
- Where the manufacturer specifies the jump points. Some vehicles require remote terminals rather than direct access to the battery.
- For hybrids and EVs, whether the instructions cover the separate 12-volt system. The Bolt cannot charge or jump-start the high-voltage traction battery.
“Peak amps” describes a maximum momentary output claim. It is not the same as a sustained or cold-cranking rating, and it does not reveal cable resistance, recovery time, or repeated-start performance. Without independent bench or vehicle testing, the responsible conclusion is that the specifications indicate a plausible emergency jump starter—not that the unit has been proven to start every advertised vehicle.

How to use it for a jump start
Use the instructions supplied with your exact model. HALO advertises the current 3-in-1 as having a three-step jump-start process, spark-proof cables, reverse-polarity protection, short-circuit protection, and automatic power-off. Those features reduce some risks; they do not make incorrect connections harmless.
- Move the vehicle and pack out of traffic if possible. Switch off the vehicle’s lights, climate controls, audio system, and accessories.
- Confirm that the Bolt has adequate charge and that the jumper-cable connector is fully inserted into the pack.
- Connect the red clamp to the vehicle’s positive terminal. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal or the vehicle manufacturer’s approved ground point.
- Activate the jump-start function according to the model’s manual.
- Attempt to start the vehicle briefly. Do not crank repeatedly or indefinitely.
- If the pack reports an error, stop. Disconnect it, check polarity and clamp contact, and allow the vehicle battery and pack to reach the temperature range specified by the manual before trying again.
- After the engine starts, disconnect the clamps in the order specified by the manual and remove them from the vehicle.
A severely discharged, frozen, physically damaged, internally shorted, or badly corroded battery may not respond. If the car still will not start after connections are confirmed, stop repeated attempts and investigate the battery, terminals, starter, alternator, fuel system, and immobilizer—or call roadside assistance.
What “more than a battery saver” adds
USB power bank
The 44.4-Wh battery is meaningful emergency capacity for phones, tablets, and other USB-powered devices. The nominal 12,000-mAh figure should not be compared directly with a phone’s battery rating: the Bolt’s internal voltage is 3.7 volts, and conversion and charging losses reduce the energy delivered to a device.
USB-C output is limited to 20 watts and USB-A output to 18 watts. That is useful for phones and many tablets, but it is not a laptop-class power source and cannot run high-draw appliances. The advertised pass-through charging feature may let the Bolt charge a device while it is itself connected to power, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a dedicated power bank in every situation.

Display and voltmeter
The display shows the pack’s status and includes a voltmeter function. That can provide a useful clue about a vehicle battery’s state, but voltage alone does not establish battery health under load. A battery can show an apparently reasonable resting voltage and still fail when asked to crank an engine.
Roadside light
The 100-lumen white floodlight can illuminate battery terminals, cables, and the engine bay. Red flood and SOS modes can help with roadside signaling. It is not a high-output searchlight or a replacement for reflective triangles, flares, or a high-visibility vest.
Temperature, storage, and battery aging
Leaving a lithium jump pack neglected in a vehicle is a poor storage strategy. Heat accelerates battery aging, while cold reduces available starting performance. One HALO Bolt operating manual lists storage from −4°F to 158°F (−20°C to 70°C), discharge from 14°F to 122°F (−10°C to 50°C), and charging from 32°F to 113°F (0°C to 45°C). Exact limits vary by generation, so do not transfer those numbers to a different Bolt without checking its manual. HALO’s operating instructions are available through this manual PDF.
For dependable emergency use:
- Recharge the pack periodically instead of storing it empty for years.
- Inspect the casing, cable insulation, and clamps before use.
- Do not use a pack that is swollen, cracked, unusually hot, leaking, or giving off an odor.
- Do not open, crush, puncture, or attempt to repair the battery.
- Follow local hazardous-battery disposal guidance; do not put a suspect lithium battery in household trash or ordinary curbside recycling.
Important recall and used-unit warning
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned on November 14, 2025, about a specific product: HALO Bolt ACDC 58830 portable chargers manufactured in December 2019 or earlier. The warning cites fire and burn risks. It does not establish that every current HALO Bolt is affected.

Stop using an affected unit and follow the CPSC warning and disposal guidance. Avoid buying any used Bolt with an unreadable model or manufacturing label.
Which HALO Bolt should you buy?
“HALO Bolt” is a product family, not a sufficiently precise buying description. HALO’s Bolt series page lists several substantially different products:
| Model | What distinguishes it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Bolt 3-in-1 | 1,500 peak amps, 44.4 Wh, USB charging, display, voltmeter, and light | Drivers wanting a straightforward jump starter and device charger |
| Bolt PAL 1000 | 1,000 peak amps, 29.97 Wh, detachable flashlight, USB charging, and voltmeter | Portability and lighting; HALO lists up to 6-liter gasoline engines |
| Bolt ACDC Max | 1,000 peak amps, 500 cranking amps, 44.4 Wh, and a 65-watt AC outlet | Small-electronics charging; HALO lists up to 6-liter gasoline and 3-liter diesel engines |
| Bolt Ultimate 3.0 | 1,500 peak amps, 55.5 Wh, compressor, 75-watt AC output, and a claimed up to 80 jumps | Buyers wanting tire inflation and AC power; the official page showed out of stock when checked |
| Bolt Ultimate 4.0 | 1,500 peak amps, 56.6 Wh, compressor, 75-watt inverter, USB charging, display, and light | A more elaborate all-in-one roadside device |
| Bolt Air/Air+ | Jump starting plus an integrated compressor; the Air+ is listed with a 130-PSI compressor | Drivers who want low-tire assistance as well as battery assistance |
Choose the 3-in-1 when you do not need AC power or tire inflation. Choose an Air or Ultimate model when a compressor is important. Choose a larger portable power station for extended laptop, camping, outage, or appliance use; a power station is not automatically a better jump starter.
Air travel qualification
Some Bolt products are labeled air-travel ready or TSA-compliant, but airline and checkpoint decisions remain subject to current rules and officer judgment. Confirm the latest airline and TSA requirements before flying, and keep the manufacturer’s watt-hour labeling accessible. Never assume that a product’s marketing label guarantees carriage on a particular flight.
HALO Bolt versus the alternatives
- Dedicated lithium jump starter: Usually the better choice when compactness, jump-start focus, and simplicity matter more than USB or AC features.
- Jump starter with compressor: Better for a driver who wants one roadside device for both a dead battery and a low tire.
- Traditional heavy-duty jump pack: More appropriate for frequent commercial use, larger engines, or buyers prioritizing sustained starting capability over portability.
- Portable power station: Better for longer-duration AC and USB power, but generally less convenient to keep in a vehicle and not a direct replacement for a dedicated jump starter.
- Jumper cables and roadside assistance: Cables are inexpensive but require another suitable vehicle and safe access. Roadside assistance remains the better answer when the fault may be mechanical, the battery is damaged, or the vehicle is in an unsafe location.
Bottom-line buying advice
Buy the HALO Bolt 3-in-1 if you own a typical 12-volt gasoline vehicle and genuinely value having a jump starter, emergency light, voltmeter, and USB power bank together. Its 44.4-Wh battery and 20-watt USB-C output make it more useful than a jump-only device during a roadside emergency.
Do not buy it expecting guaranteed performance on a large diesel, a permanently dead battery, or a vehicle with an unresolved electrical fault. Verify the exact model, follow its manual, maintain the charge, and treat the manufacturer’s peak-amp and jump-count figures as claims rather than independent performance guarantees. For a used ACDC 58830, perform the CPSC manufacturing-code check before use—and avoid affected units entirely.
