The GR86 is the second-generation successor to the GT86, not a separate kind of car: both are compact, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Toyota sports coupes. In Toyota’s U.S. 2022 specifications, the biggest change is the engine: the GR86’s naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer-four is rated at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft, versus the prior generation’s 205 hp and 156 lb-ft in Toyota’s launch comparison. Badges and specifications differ by market, so the figures below are specifically identified by region and model year.
Are the GR86 and GT86 the same car?
They are successive generations of the same Toyota 86 sports-coupe line. Toyota says the original 86 went on sale in April 2012 as a two-door, four-seat coupe with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Toyota also connects the 86 name to the AE86 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno. Toyota’s 86 lineage history covers the original model’s introduction and layout.
The name varies by market. “GT86” is the badge used in some regions for the first generation; it was not used identically worldwide. Toyota Europe describes the GR86 as an evolution of the GT86, while Toyota’s U.S. materials call the predecessor the 86. The comparison here uses “GT86” for the first generation and labels U.S. and European specifications separately.
What changed in the engine and performance figures?
The clearest change in Toyota’s U.S. 2022 figures is increased displacement and rated output. The GR86 uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer-four rated at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. Toyota’s U.S. launch announcement compares that with 205 hp and 156 lb-ft for the prior generation, and says the newer engine reaches peak torque at a lower rpm. These are Toyota-published figures, not independent test results.

European-market GR86 figures are different: Toyota Europe lists 231 bhp and 250 Nm. Those ratings should not be combined with U.S. figures as though they were from the same market or rating system. Which transmissions are available?
Toyota’s U.S. 2022 GR86 specifications list six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions. Transmission availability and equipment can vary with market and model year; check the original specification for the exact car rather than assuming every GT86 or GR86 has the same options. Did the dimensions and layout change?
The fundamental layout remains front-engine and rear-wheel drive, with a four-seat coupe body. Toyota Europe says the GR86’s overall dimensions are close to the GT86’s: the GR86 is 10 mm lower and has a wheelbase 5 mm longer. Is the GR86 more fuel-efficient than the GT86?
The available figures here do not establish a fair, same-market and same-test-cycle comparison across specific GT86 and GR86 model years. Toyota’s U.S. launch announcement gives 2022 GR86 EPA estimates of 20 city, 27 highway and 22 combined mpg with the manual, and 21 city, 31 highway and 25 combined mpg with the automatic. These are U.S. EPA estimates for the 2022 GR86, not real-world results or universal figures. Compare the official fuel-economy label for the particular model year and transmission you are considering.

Should you buy a used GT86 or GR86?
Generation alone cannot tell you whether a particular used car is a better buy. The official launch and lineage information does not establish current asking prices, local availability, or the condition and reliability of individual cars. Compare actual vehicles and documentation, not just the model name.
- Check the model year, market, trim and transmission against the vehicle’s documents and specification.
- Review service records and ask about maintenance history; Toyota provides market-specific owner documentation, including U.S. 2022 GR86 manuals and warranty information and Toyota Japan’s 86 manual index.
- Have the car’s condition assessed and compare mileage, price and equipment with other local listings.
- Choose between the generations based on the condition and value of the specific cars available to you, as well as whether the newer GR86’s higher U.S.-rated output matters for your use.
How did Toyota describe the original 86?
In its 2022 launch-era material, Toyota called the first-generation 86 a tribute to the fun-to-drive AE-86 Corollas of the 1980s. That is Toyota’s own description of the lineage, not a claim that the newer coupe is the same car as those older models. Toyota’s 2022 GR86 launch material gives that wording and context.
