The Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 LM sold for $20,630,000 at RM Sotheby’s Las Vegas auction on 21 November 2025. Its maker described the result as the highest price ever paid at auction for a new car, excluding charitable sales—a qualification that matters when comparing it with other headline results.
How much did the Gordon Murray S1 LM sell for?
RM Sotheby’s recorded a sale price of $20,630,000 for lot 1, “The Special One,” at its Las Vegas sale on 21 November 2025. RM Sotheby’s lot result and Gordon Murray Special Vehicles’ announcement, published the following day, report the same amount.
The event was held alongside an amfAR benefit gala. The manufacturer’s record claim expressly excludes charitable sales, so the result should not be presented as an unqualified record for every new car sold at auction.
What record did the S1 LM set?
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles called the sale “the most expensive new car ever sold at auction (excluding charitable sales).” That is the manufacturer’s characterization of the result, not a claim that the S1 LM is the most expensive car of any kind ever auctioned.

- Detailed model kit in 1:24 scale.
- The high-quality kit from TAMIYA must be assembled by yourself.
- The independent assembly is accompanied by step by step or illustrated assembly instructions (English language not guaranteed). The assembly instructions are included (English language not guaranteed).
- Based on the assembly instructions (English language not guaranteed), the precise individual parts must be assembled. The parts can be painted according to your own ideas.
- Tools, glue and paints are not included with the plastic kit. These must be purchased optionally.
The distinction is illustrated by RM Sotheby’s year-end results: the auction house reported a $26 million sale for a 2025 Ferrari Daytona SP3 “Tailor Made” and described it as the most valuable new car ever sold at auction. Those statements use different scopes, particularly around charitable sales; the figures should not be treated as directly equivalent records without that context. See RM Sotheby’s 2025 year-end report.
What was the S1 LM sold at auction?
The S1 LM is Gordon Murray Special Vehicles’ first major supercar, designed under Professor Gordon Murray. RM Sotheby’s says the model was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the McLaren F1 GTR’s 1995 Le Mans victory. The five-car production run was exceptionally limited; the auctioned car was chassis #1 and the final example available for sale, according to the manufacturer and RM Sotheby’s pre-sale announcement.

Is the S1 LM the most expensive car ever auctioned?
Not on the evidence of these results. The supported claim is narrower: Gordon Murray Special Vehicles said the S1 LM set a record for a new car sold at auction when charitable sales are excluded. “Most expensive car ever auctioned” drops both the new-car category and the charity-sale boundary, so it overstates what the S1 LM result establishes.
When comparing auction records, check whether the vehicle was new at the time of sale, whether the figure is the actual sale price, and whether charitable sales are included. Those definitions can produce different record claims even when all parties are reporting real auction results.
