GM has signaled that hybrids are part of its plans, but it has not announced a U.S. plug-in hybrid model, launch date or certified electric range. The roughly 70-mile figure—and speculation about late 2027 or early 2028 arrivals—comes from an AutoForecast Solutions projection reported by Carscoops, not a GM specification.
What GM has—and has not—confirmed
Carscoops reports that Mike Anderson, GM’s vice president of propulsion engineering, told CNBC that hybrids are coming. Anderson was quoted as saying, “We know what they want and we want to give that to them as quickly as we can.” He did not identify models or give a timeframe in the comments described by Carscoops.
Anderson also reportedly called an all-electric-only strategy “tone deaf to our customers,” while saying GM’s “long-term vision is an all-electric future” and that reaching it will involve “technology diversity.” The remarks indicate an openness to multiple powertrain types; they do not confirm a specific U.S. plug-in hybrid (PHEV) program.
Where the 70-mile estimate comes from
Carscoops attributes the projection of about 70 miles of electric-only range, with possible arrivals in late 2027 or early 2028, to AutoForecast Solutions. Those are forecasts, not launch plans or specifications published by GM. No U.S. GM PHEV model, launch date, price, battery capacity, charging specification or EPA-certified range is established by the cited reporting.

Equinox and Silverado PHEVs are possibilities raised in the Carscoops report, not models confirmed by Anderson. A Chevrolet Equinox PHEV is reported to exist in China, but its presence there does not establish a U.S. version or prove that a U.S. model would share its specifications.
What a PHEV’s electric range means
A plug-in hybrid combines an electric motor and battery with a combustion engine, and its battery can be charged from an external power source. Unlike a mild or conventional strong hybrid, it can drive using energy stored through plugging in. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says a PHEV’s charge-depleting range generally represents its all-electric range, although the engine may run in small amounts during that operation.

So the projected 70 miles should be read as an estimate of electric driving before the battery is depleted under applicable test conditions—not a guarantee of 70 miles in every trip. The EPA’s range and fuel-economy values use combined label weighting of 55% city and 45% highway. The EPA also reports that average PHEV charge-depleting range has remained largely unchanged since model year 2011; that history gives context but does not validate the GM forecast.
Any eventual comparison should account for market, model year, test cycle and vehicle configuration. Battery size, charging rate, total fuel economy after the battery is depleted, price and—especially for a truck—towing and payload would also matter. None of those details is available for a U.S. GM PHEV.

Chevrolet PHEVs abroad are not U.S. announcements
Chevrolet’s plug-in hybrid activity in other markets shows that the technology is not entirely new to the brand, but it should not be mistaken for evidence of U.S. availability.
- Argentina: Chevrolet announced Captiva PHEV sales there on January 6, 2026, describing it as the brand’s first plug-in hybrid in that market. The company said it recorded more than 100 presales during the final two months of 2025. Those are Argentina-specific figures and do not indicate a U.S. launch.
- China: Carscoops reports that a Chinese-market Equinox PHEV is offered with a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, an electric motor and either a 16.5- or 24.4-kWh LFP battery. The report gives 365 hp combined and claimed electric range of up to 96 miles. These are reported China-market specifications, not U.S. EPA ratings or specifications for a future American Equinox.
What prospective buyers should watch for
A meaningful U.S. announcement would need to establish the model and market first, then provide a launch window, certified range and test method, battery and charging details, price, trim availability and warranty. For a possible Silverado PHEV, towing and payload figures would be essential too. Until GM publishes those details, the 70-mile figure and the Equinox and Silverado possibilities should remain attributed forecasts.

Because a PHEV charges from an external source, home charging may be useful if a future vehicle supports it. GM’s June 2026 PowerShift Charger and V2H Enablement Kit announcement concerns appropriately equipped V2H-capable GM EVs; it does not establish compatibility with future PHEVs. Once a specific vehicle is announced, buyers should check its connector, supported charging rate and installation requirements before choosing equipment.
