GM’s LMR Battery Breakthrough Could Mean More Range at Lower Cost—But It’s Not Here Yet

GM’s lithium-manganese-rich battery could improve the range-to-cost tradeoff for future electric trucks and SUVs. Here’s what the 33% claim, 400-mile target, 2028 timeline, and voltage-fade risk really mean.

GM’s lithium-manganese-rich battery program could give future electric trucks and full-size SUVs a better range-to-cost tradeoff. GM says its planned LMR prismatic cells may deliver about 33% higher energy density than leading LFP cells at a comparable cost, supporting a future electric truck with more than 400 miles of range. Those are company targets—not EPA ratings, confirmed retail specifications, or independently verified production results.

The technology is still in development. Ultium Cells plans to begin U.S. commercial production in 2028, after pre-production work expected at an LG Energy Solution facility in late 2027. The decisive question is whether GM and LG can solve the voltage fade and long-term durability problems that have historically limited lithium- and manganese-rich cathodes.

The short answer: promising chemistry, unfinished product

GM’s LMR program is a serious attempt to place a future battery between two familiar choices:

  • LFP cells, which generally offer lower cost and good durability but lower energy density;
  • high-nickel cells, which provide strong energy density but depend more heavily on expensive nickel and cobalt; and
  • LMR cells, which aim to use more affordable manganese while retaining enough energy density for large, long-range vehicles.

GM is not saying that LMR is already powering a mass-market vehicle. It is also not saying that every future GM EV will use it. The company’s stated plan is to add LMR to a broader battery portfolio that can use different chemistries and cell formats for different vehicle requirements.

If the targets are achieved, the benefit could appear in several ways: more driving range from a pack of similar size, the same range from a smaller or lighter pack, a lower battery cost, or some combination of all three. GM has not yet provided enough production-cell data to say which outcome customers will actually receive.

What does LMR mean?

LMR stands for lithium-manganese-rich. In GM’s program, it describes a lithium-ion cathode chemistry containing a higher proportion of manganese and less reliance on nickel and cobalt than a typical nickel-rich long-range cell.

Manganese is generally less expensive and less supply-constrained than nickel and cobalt, but “manganese is cheaper” does not automatically mean a cheaper battery. The final economics also depend on the cost of processed cathode material, particle quality, manufacturing yield, cell assembly, pack design, plant utilization, energy prices, and the geography of the supply chain.

GM and LG Energy Solution are working on more than the cathode formula itself. GM says the development program includes cathode materials, electrolytes, additives, cell form factors, and assembly processes. GM says it began researching manganese-rich cells in 2015, while LG Energy Solution had more than 200 LMR patents or patent applications as of December 31, 2024, according to GM’s announcement. Patents and years of development establish serious technical effort, but they do not by themselves prove the final cell’s cost, range, or service life.

LMR is not the same as LFP or LMFP

Chemistry General position in the battery tradeoff What it means for GM’s strategy
LFP Lower-cost chemistry with generally strong durability and safety characteristics, but lower energy density than nickel-rich alternatives. Useful where cost, durability, and stationary storage matter more than maximum range or minimum pack size.
LMFP A manganese-containing variation of the iron-phosphate family. It should not be confused with the layered lithium-manganese-rich cathode GM is discussing. Still belongs to the phosphate-based group rather than representing GM’s announced LMR architecture.
High-nickel High energy density suited to long-range EVs, with greater exposure to nickel and cobalt costs and supply considerations. Remains part of GM’s broader portfolio while LMR is being developed.
LMR Aims to combine manganese-rich material and higher energy density at a cost closer to LFP. Potential “workhorse” chemistry for high-volume trucks, SUVs, and other vehicles that need substantial range without an extremely large pack.

What GM is claiming about range and energy density

GM says its LMR prismatic cells offer 33% higher energy density than the best-performing LFP-based cells at a comparable cost. Energy density describes how much energy a cell can store for a given amount of mass or volume. It is not the same thing as EPA-rated vehicle range.

Higher cell-level energy density can help in two different ways:

  1. More range with a similar battery: A vehicle could carry more stored energy without adding an equivalent amount of battery mass or volume.
  2. The same range with a smaller battery: Engineers could reduce pack size or weight while preserving the target range.

The real vehicle result will depend on usable energy, thermal-management equipment, the battery’s operating reserve, drivetrain efficiency, aerodynamics, tires, weather, speed, payload, and pack integration. A 33% cell-level energy-density advantage cannot be converted directly into 33% more EPA range.

GM’s vehicle-level goal is an electric truck with more than 400 miles of range. That number is a future target, not a confirmed EPA rating. GM has not named a first retail model, model year, final battery capacity, price, or certified range for an LMR-equipped vehicle.

Why the prismatic cell format matters

GM is pairing the LMR chemistry with a prismatic cell rather than the pouch format used in some existing Ultium applications. A prismatic cell uses a rigid rectangular housing. That can make it easier to package large cells into a battery system and may reduce the number of components required around the cells.

GM’s separate battery-strategy materials say prismatic-cell manufacturing can reduce battery-module components by 75% and total pack components by 50%. Those figures describe the potential of prismatic-cell and pack improvements broadly; they should not be presented as a confirmed LMR-only saving.

The same caution applies to GM’s discussion of a $6,000-per-pack reduction. That figure was associated with low-cost LFP and prismatic-cell improvements in a Chevrolet Silverado EV context. It is not an independently confirmed $6,000 LMR saving, and battery savings would not necessarily appear dollar-for-dollar in a vehicle’s showroom price.

Fewer components can reduce material and assembly costs, simplify manufacturing, and create more room for active battery material. But fewer components do not eliminate the engineering requirements for cooling, crash protection, electrical isolation, serviceability, structural strength, and protection against cell-to-cell thermal events.

GM’s production plan: late 2027 pre-production, 2028 commercial production

GM and LG Energy Solution say Ultium Cells plans to begin commercial production of LMR prismatic cells in the United States in 2028. Pre-production is expected at an LG Energy Solution facility by late 2027.

GM says the final production design will be validated at its Battery Cell Development Center in Warren, Michigan, and at an LG Energy Solution facility. That sequence matters: a promising laboratory or pilot cell still has to demonstrate consistent performance when manufactured at automotive volume.

The dates are plans, not guarantees. GM’s announcement includes forward-looking-statement warnings. A Reuters report dated June 10, 2026, said GM’s battery chief described LMR development as on schedule, but the report did not confirm that the 2028 commercial-production target remained unchanged. Until GM announces a production vehicle, plant output, and certification results, the timeline should be treated as a stated objective.

The central technical risk is voltage fade

Lithium- and manganese-rich cathodes have been studied for years because they can offer attractive energy-storage potential. Their major historical problem is that the battery’s voltage can decline as it ages or cycles, even when some of its nominal capacity remains.

That phenomenon is called voltage fade. It matters because energy is related to both capacity and voltage. A battery that still appears to retain much of its capacity may deliver less total energy, less consistent performance, or a less useful operating range if its average discharge voltage falls significantly.

Research has linked voltage and energy fade to several interacting mechanisms, including:

  • oxygen loss from the cathode structure;
  • movement of transition-metal atoms within the material;
  • cation mixing and changes in atomic ordering;
  • transformation from a layered structure toward a spinel-like structure;
  • microstructural defects and particle cracking; and
  • side reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface.

Peer-reviewed work has also indicated that improving atomic-level elemental uniformity can help mitigate voltage and energy fade. That is one reason cathode synthesis, particle consistency, coatings, additives, and manufacturing controls are as important as the headline chemistry.

GM says its engineers have addressed earlier LMR performance and durability problems through work on the cathode, electrolyte, additives, cell design, and assembly process. That is encouraging, but the public announcement does not include a complete independent dataset for the final production cell.

The tests that still matter

Before LMR can be judged as a breakthrough for a heavy-duty EV, buyers and independent testers will need evidence about:

  • cycle life under frequent high-power use;
  • calendar aging when a vehicle spends long periods parked;
  • cold-weather charging and range;
  • fast-charging speed and durability;
  • usable-energy retention rather than nominal capacity alone;
  • thermal behavior during repeated high-load operation;
  • performance while towing or carrying heavy payloads; and
  • the actual cost of a production pack.

Truck use is especially demanding. Towing increases aerodynamic drag and energy consumption, while repeated acceleration, hill climbing, fast charging, and high ambient temperatures place additional demands on the battery. A truck advertised with more than 400 miles of unloaded range would not necessarily travel 400 miles while towing a heavy trailer.

How LMR fits GM’s battery portfolio

LMR is best understood as a portfolio addition rather than a universal replacement. GM’s broader strategy is to match chemistry and cell format to the vehicle’s requirements for cost, performance, range, packaging, and use case.

High-nickel cells can remain useful where maximum energy density is the priority. LFP can remain attractive for lower-cost applications and energy storage. LMR could become the middle-ground option for high-volume electric trucks and full-size SUVs if it delivers enough power, durability, and manufacturing consistency.

Reuters reported that GM may no longer pursue LFP for EV applications at the volume previously contemplated, while continuing LFP production for energy-storage systems. GM’s battery chief reportedly described LMR as a potential “workhorse” chemistry for future high-volume EVs. That is a reported strategy update, not a formal announcement that every future GM EV will use LMR.

What the technology could mean for electric-truck buyers

If GM meets its targets, LMR could address several weaknesses of current electric pickups and large SUVs.

More usable long-distance range

More stored energy without a proportionally larger pack could make long highway trips easier and reduce the frequency of charging stops. That matters more for a truck than for a small commuter car because truck buyers often expect long-distance travel, payload carrying, and towing.

However, the practical benefit will depend on the final vehicle. Range is affected by trailer weight, trailer shape, speed, temperature, wind, road grade, payload, tire choice, and charging availability. The relevant future test will be real-world towing range and charging time—not only the unloaded EPA number.

A smaller or lighter pack

GM could use higher energy density to reach its range target with a smaller battery. Lower battery mass could improve efficiency, payload capacity, handling, or towing performance. A smaller pack could also create more flexibility in vehicle packaging.

GM has not published production-vehicle data that quantifies those benefits. It would be premature to claim that an LMR truck will be lighter, carry more payload, or tow farther than a current high-nickel truck.

Lower vehicle cost—or more equipment at the same price

A lower-cost battery gives an automaker choices. GM could reduce the vehicle’s price, increase range, add features, protect its margin, or divide the savings among several areas. Battery-cost savings do not automatically become an equal reduction in the sticker price.

The economics will also depend on domestic production, factory utilization, material contracts, manufacturing yield, and whether LMR cells actually maintain their performance over the vehicle’s warranty period.

LMR will not remove the need for charging

Even a 400-mile electric truck will need dependable charging at home and on the road. More range reduces charging frequency; it does not eliminate the need for a suitable electrical installation or a reliable public-charging network.

GM says its GM Energy PowerShift Charger can provide Level 2 charging at up to 51 miles of range per charging hour under its stated conditions. The actual result depends on the vehicle, battery state, charger output, household wiring, temperature, and the vehicle’s own charging limit. GM also markets vehicle-to-home equipment for compatible vehicles and installations.

For a current or future EV owner, a Level 2 EV charger may be the most practical ownership upgrade, but charger compatibility and installation must be checked first. Confirm the vehicle’s connector, the charger’s connector, available amperage, electrical-panel capacity, circuit requirements, outdoor-rating needs, and the vehicle’s maximum AC charging rate. A qualified electrician should verify the installation rather than assuming every home can support the desired charging speed.

A NACS-to-J1772 adapter can be useful in some charging situations, but it is not universally interchangeable. The correct adapter depends on the vehicle inlet, the charger connector, communication standards, current limits, and the manufacturer’s approval. Nothing in GM’s LMR announcement indicates that a future LMR truck will require such an adapter.

For long-distance travel, GM identifies EVgo and Pilot Travel Centers among its public-charging partners. Network coverage, charger uptime, pricing, payment requirements, and trailer-friendly site design can vary by location. Those practical details may matter as much as the battery’s maximum range for truck owners.

How to evaluate GM’s LMR claims when vehicles arrive

When GM publishes production details, do not judge the battery on energy density alone. A useful buyer checklist should include:

  1. EPA range: Look for the certified figure and compare it with the truck’s wheel, tire, and trim configuration.
  2. Usable battery capacity: Gross capacity is less informative than the energy available to the driver.
  3. Charging curve: Peak charging power is only one number. The time needed to add a meaningful amount of range is more useful.
  4. Towing data: Check tested or independently measured range with a realistic trailer, not only unloaded highway range.
  5. Cold-weather performance: Battery heating and reduced regenerative braking can materially affect winter use.
  6. Warranty terms: Pay attention to the retained-capacity threshold, mileage, years, and exclusions.
  7. Pack repairability: Ask how the manufacturer handles damaged modules, cells, and enclosures after a collision or out-of-warranty failure.
  8. Price: Compare the complete vehicle price, destination charges, incentives, and equipment—not a projected battery-cost saving.

Bottom line

GM’s LMR battery program deserves attention because it combines a manganese-rich cathode, a prismatic cell architecture, a major battery partner, years of reported development, and a defined U.S. production objective. The commercial promise is compelling: energy density closer to high-nickel cells, cost closer to LFP, and enough range for future electric trucks to exceed 400 miles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the breakthrough has not yet reached consumers. The range, cost, and durability figures remain targets or company claims, and the hardest challenge—preventing voltage fade while preserving performance through years of real-world use—still needs public validation. For now, LMR is a credible future battery strategy, not a reason to treat any current GM EV as an LMR vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GM’s LMR battery available in a vehicle today?

No. GM’s LMR prismatic cells are still part of a development and commercialization program. Ultium Cells plans to begin U.S. commercial production in 2028, but GM has not confirmed the first retail model, model year, price, or EPA range.

Will GM’s LMR battery really provide more than 400 miles of range?

GM is targeting more than 400 miles for a future electric truck. That is not an EPA-certified rating, and actual range will depend on the final vehicle, battery pack, tires, weather, payload, speed, and towing conditions.

Is LMR the same as LFP or LMFP?

No. LFP is lithium-iron-phosphate, while LMFP is a manganese-containing member of the phosphate family. GM’s LMR refers to a lithium-manganese-rich cathode architecture intended to occupy a different position between LFP and high-nickel batteries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the main risk with lithium-manganese-rich batteries?

The main historical concern is voltage fade: the battery can lose average discharge voltage and usable energy as it ages, even if some nominal capacity remains. GM says it has addressed earlier durability issues, but independent production-cell data on cycle life, aging, cold-weather use, towing, and fast charging is not yet available.

Will LMR make future GM electric trucks cheaper?

It could lower battery-pack costs, but a lower pack cost does not automatically produce an equal reduction in the vehicle’s retail price. GM may use any savings for lower prices, longer range, additional equipment, manufacturing investment, or a combination of those choices.

The Bottom Line

GM’s LMR battery is a promising future range-and-cost solution, not a current consumer product. The 33% energy-density claim and 400-plus-mile truck target are meaningful if GM can validate them at production scale, but voltage retention, durability, towing performance, charging behavior, and final pack cost remain to be proven.
