GM’s new 8.3L Duramax V8 is larger by displacement than the 500-cu-in V8 that powered the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado—but “GM’s biggest engine” needs a qualifier. The Duramax is a huge new production diesel for 2027 heavy-duty pickups; Chevrolet Performance also offers larger crate engines. GM rates the Duramax at 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft.
What GM announced about the 8.3L Duramax
On September 21, 2026, GM introduced its “Mongoose” framing for an all-new diesel V8. Three days later, the company announced the engine’s official designation and headline specifications: the Duramax 8.3L Turbo-Diesel V8, rated at 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft. GM says it will be available in refreshed 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups. “Mongoose” is the name used in GM’s September 21 teaser; the September 24 release calls it the Duramax 8.3L Turbo-Diesel V8.

GM Executive Chief Engineer Norman Peralta, Global Engine and Battery Systems, described it as “the culmination of decades of GM diesel development and integration.” That statement speaks to the engine’s development history, not a claim that it exceeds every engine GM has built in every measure.

The apt 1970s production-car comparison is Cadillac’s 500-cu-in (8.2L) V8, introduced in the 1970 Eldorado. GM’s 1970 Cadillac vehicle information kit called it “the largest passenger car engine in the industry” at the time and listed period output of 400 hp and 550 lb-ft.

The difference is six cubic inches, or roughly 1.2 percent of the Cadillac’s displacement. That is a real but modest increase. It does not mean the Duramax is only slightly different in purpose or performance: it is a modern turbo-diesel designed for heavy-duty truck use, while the Cadillac was a large gasoline V8 in a luxury passenger car. Their power and torque figures come from different eras and rating conventions, so they should not be treated as a controlled, like-for-like performance test.
Is it GM’s biggest engine ever?
Not if “biggest” means the largest engine anywhere in GM’s offerings. Chevrolet Performance lists crate engines that exceed 8.3L, including the 632-cu-in ZZ632/1000 and a 572-cu-in V8.

Chevrolet Performance’s 2021 announcement called the ZZ632/1000 its “biggest, baddest crate engine we’ve ever built”—a claim specifically about its crate-engine lineup. A crate engine is not the same category as an engine offered in a production pickup. The defensible distinction is that GM’s new 8.3L Duramax is larger than Cadillac’s 1970 production passenger-car V8 and is a very large production HD-pickup diesel; the available evidence does not establish that it is the largest engine GM has ever put in every kind of street-legal vehicle.
What the announced towing figures mean
GM also cites maximum towing ratings of up to 20,000 pounds conventionally and 38,000 pounds with a gooseneck hitch for properly equipped trucks. These are truck-level maximums, not ratings for the engine alone, and they do not apply to every Silverado HD or Sierra HD configuration. The exact truck, equipment and configuration matter.
