The GMC Yukon has five generations. Its first model year was 1992, even though GMC dates the vehicle’s debut to 1991. The commonly used model-year ranges are 1992–1999, 2000–2006, 2007–2014, 2015–2020, and 2021 onward.
GMC Yukon generations by model year
| Generation | Model years | Transition point |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1992–1999 | Debuted in 1991 as a 1992 model year, according to GMC Life’s Yukon history. |
| Second | 2000–2006 | GMC says the second generation premiered as a 2000 model. |
| Third | 2007–2014 | GMC describes this as the third iteration; this full year range is the commonly used grouping reflected by Cars.com’s model-year reference. |
| Fourth | 2015–2020 | GMC identifies 2015 as the start of the all-new fourth generation. |
| Fifth | 2021 onward | GMC calls the 2021 model the “Next Generation Yukon.” The independent year-range reference listed 2021–2027 when accessed; the range may extend as new model years are released. |
These broad ranges are also reflected in Cars.com’s year groupings. Parts references use platform labels for Yukon generations—GMT400, GMT800, GMT900, K2UC/G, and GMT1UC—which can help with catalog navigation, but a platform or generation label alone does not confirm that a specific part fits.
What changed between Yukon generations?
The generations mark major redesigns, not a promise that every Yukon within a range has the same equipment. Features depend on model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, and configuration.
First generation: 1992–1999
The first Yukon was offered as a two-door model. GMC’s history notes the Denali concept in 1997 and its subsequent move into production. Its debut year and first model year differ: GMC dates the debut to 1991, while the vehicle was sold as a 1992 model.

Second generation: 2000–2006
The second generation arrived for the 2000 model year with substantial styling changes, according to GMC. The changeover is a useful reference point when narrowing a Yukon by appearance, but appearance alone is not enough to identify exact equipment or parts fitment.
Third generation: 2007–2014
GMC’s history describes a more contemporary front fascia, hood, and taillights, as well as expanded infotainment choices. The broad model-year grouping is 2007–2014; equipment and available systems still vary by year and trim.

Fourth generation: 2015–2020
GMC identifies 2015 as the start of the fourth generation, with revised styling, safety technologies, and available Magnetic Ride Control. Treat “available” as configuration-dependent rather than standard across every Yukon from these years.
Fifth generation: 2021 onward
GMC describes the 2021 Yukon as larger and more differentiated, with a redesigned Denali interior and rear-seat media options. CarMax notes the redesign introduced independent rear suspension. Those changes are useful distinctions from the preceding generation, but do not establish that every feature appears on every trim.

Which generation is a 2015 Yukon?
A 2015 Yukon is part of the fourth generation, which runs from model years 2015 through 2020. The generation change is tied to the model-year label—not simply the calendar date when a vehicle was built or first registered.
How to check what year your Yukon is
- Check the vehicle documents. Use the model year shown on the registration or title as your starting point.
- Check the VIN. The GMC navigation catalog says the 10th VIN character identifies the model-year code. Use it as a cross-check, and consult a year-code reference or GMC source if you need to decode the character.
- Choose that model year in a suitable catalog. GMC’s parts catalog organizes vehicles by year and platform, and HERE’s GMC navigation catalog provides model-year selection. Start with the exact model year rather than relying only on a generation name.
- Confirm the full configuration before ordering parts. Verify trim, drivetrain, engine, and part number with a suitable parts catalog or GMC dealer. A generation range is a useful filter, not a fitment guarantee.
What to compare when choosing between Yukon generations
For a purchase comparison, start with the vehicle’s specific configuration rather than treating an entire generation as one specification. Check body and cabin design, powertrain, seating and cargo layout, infotainment and safety equipment, and the exact trim. Then weigh condition, service history, mileage, and a current vehicle-specific inspection. The cited model-year and history references do not establish a reliability ranking between generations.
