When will GM’s eyes-off, hands-off driving system be available?
GM plans to introduce its eyes-off, hands-off driving system in 2028, beginning with highway operation on the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ. GM describes the announcement as a future product introduction, not as a claim that current GM vehicles can already drive without driver supervision. The company’s announcement says, “In 2028, GM will introduce eyes-off driving on the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, beginning with highways.” GM’s October 2025 announcement does not provide a more specific launch date.
GM’s March 2026 engineering update says highway operation will come first, followed by an intended expansion to driveway-to-driveway operation. GM also says the capability is intended to reach additional gasoline and electric vehicles, including premium Cadillacs and mainstream Chevrolets, after the Escalade IQ launch. Those are roadmap plans; GM has not published a complete model list or confirmed timing for each additional vehicle.

Which GM vehicle will get eyes-off driving first?
The Cadillac ESCALADE IQ is the first vehicle GM has named for the planned eyes-off system. The current vehicle and the future driving capability should be treated as separate things: buying or driving a present-day ESCALADE IQ does not, by itself, mean that the vehicle has 2028 eyes-off driving.
Cadillac currently describes the 2026 Cadillac ESCALADE IQ as a seven-seat, all-electric luxury SUV. Cadillac lists a manufacturer-estimated 465-mile range and a displayed starting price of $127,405 for that model page. Those specifications describe the current vehicle, not the final 2028 autonomy package, and vehicle pricing, equipment, and availability can change.
Readers researching the vehicle can use the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ model information, but the future eyes-off feature should not be assumed to be standard, optional, retrofittable, or included at that current listed price. GM has not disclosed those commercial details.
How will GM’s planned system work?
GM says the system will combine lidar, radar, and cameras in a redundant sensor design. GM also says the 2028 platform will use centralized computing that integrates propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment, and safety functions. The company describes the next-generation platform as debuting in 2028, with up to 35 times more AI performance and 1,000 times more bandwidth than GM’s previous systems, according to GM’s 2025 announcement.
Sensor redundancy means the vehicle is not intended to depend on only one sensing method. Lidar, radar, and cameras have different roles and limitations, so combining them can provide a broader basis for perception than relying on a single sensor type. However, the public materials do not yet specify the production sensor suppliers, sensor ranges, computing hardware, fallback procedures, or the exact software behavior that will ship in 2028.

GM’s engineering coverage describes the architecture as part of a broader autonomy program and says the company is beginning supervised public-road testing of next-generation automated technology. Testing and engineering readiness are evidence of development progress, but testing does not establish the final consumer feature’s legal availability, safety performance, or operating limits.
What is the difference between Super Cruise and GM’s planned eyes-off driving?
The central difference is driver responsibility. Super Cruise is a hands-free, eyes-on driver-assistance system: the vehicle can control steering and other driving functions on compatible roads, but the driver must continue monitoring the road and be ready to take over. GM’s planned eyes-off system is intended to let the driver stop maintaining continuous visual attention within the system’s defined operating domain.
| Characteristic | Current Super Cruise | Planned 2028 eyes-off system |
|---|---|---|
| GM’s description | Hands-free driver assistance | Eyes-off driving or automated technology |
| Driver’s eyes | The driver must watch the road | Continuous visual monitoring is not intended within the defined operating domain |
| Driver monitoring | A steering-wheel-mounted camera tracks head and eye movement | Final monitoring and engagement requirements have not been disclosed |
| Initial operating domain | Compatible, mapped roads supported by Super Cruise | Highways, according to GM’s roadmap |
| Fallback responsibility | The human driver must remain ready to take over | GM has not published the final fallback and handover requirements |
| First named vehicle | Available across a range of GM vehicles and models, subject to equipment and eligibility | Cadillac ESCALADE IQ |
| SAE level published by GM in the reviewed sources | Not presented here as a specific SAE level | No specific SAE level announced in the reviewed materials |
| Pricing and availability | Varies by vehicle, equipment, market, and current GM terms | Not disclosed |
Chevrolet’s Super Cruise owner-support guidance says the driver must pay attention while using the system. The guidance is why “hands-free” should not be read as “self-driving” or “eyes-off.” A driver who uses current Super Cruise must not treat the feature as permission to read, watch a screen, sleep, or otherwise stop supervising the road.
Can you take your eyes off the road with GM Super Cruise?
No. Current GM Super Cruise still requires the driver to keep eyes on the road and remain prepared to intervene. Super Cruise can remove the need to hold the steering wheel on compatible roads, but hands-off steering control is not the same as permission to stop watching traffic.
The system’s Driver Attention System uses a camera mounted on the steering wheel to track the driver’s head and eye movement. The monitoring requirement is a practical distinction between current Super Cruise and GM’s planned eyes-off technology. Chevrolet’s official instructions should take priority over general descriptions, because operating requirements can vary by vehicle and system version.

Will GM’s 2028 system be Level 3 or Level 4?
GM has not stated a specific SAE J3016 automation level for the 2028 eyes-off system in the reviewed public materials. The article should therefore not label the system Level 3 or Level 4 merely because GM uses terms such as “eyes-off,” “self-driving,” or “automated technology.”
SAE J3016 describes six levels of driving automation, from Level 0 through Level 5. The framework distinguishes driver-support features, where a human remains responsible for supervision, from automated-driving features that perform the driving task under defined conditions. The final SAE level depends on the production system’s precise operating domain, fallback behavior, and human responsibilities, none of which GM has fully published for this launch.

Where will GM eyes-off driving work?
GM says the first operating domain will be highways. GM’s longer-term goal is driveway-to-driveway operation, but the company has not said that the initial 2028 release will work on every road or complete every part of a trip without human involvement.
| Operating question | What GM has said | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| First road type | Highways | Exact highway network and coverage |
| Longer-term scope | Driveway-to-driveway operation | Launch timing, route conditions, and whether the goal covers every trip |
| Geographic availability | GM’s announcement qualifies availability and permissible use by state | State-by-state approvals and launch markets |
| Speed and lane behavior | Not disclosed in the reviewed sources | Permitted speeds, lane changes, merges, exits, and passing behavior |
| Conditions | Not disclosed in the reviewed sources | Weather, construction zones, emergency scenes, poor markings, and blocked lanes |
| Vehicle eligibility | ESCALADE IQ first; broader gasoline and electric vehicle expansion intended | Final models, hardware requirements, and retrofit eligibility |
GM has explicitly included the qualification “Availability and permissible use by state” in its announcement. State permission, vehicle certification, insurance rules, and operational restrictions may affect where the feature can be activated even after the hardware and software are ready.

Rashed Haq, GM vice president of Vehicle Autonomy, said on April 28, 2026: “Super Cruise is the cornerstone of GM’s autonomous roadmap, from today’s hands-free features to eyes-off, starting with the Escalade IQ in 2028.” GM published the statement with its Super Cruise milestone.
The 1-billion-mile and more-than-800-million-mile figures have different publication dates and may use different reporting cutoffs. GM’s figures demonstrate the scale of the company’s claimed deployment and testing experience; they do not, by themselves, prove that the future eyes-off system will be safer than a human driver or operate without restrictions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much will GM’s eyes-off driving feature cost?
GM has not announced pricing for the 2028 eyes-off feature. The company has not said whether the capability will be standard equipment, a paid option, a subscription, or tied to a particular trim or ownership plan. The current Cadillac ESCALADE IQ price displayed on Cadillac’s product page should not be treated as the price of a future autonomy package.
GM also has not disclosed whether current ESCALADE IQ vehicles could receive the capability through a software update. The final answer will depend on production sensors, computing hardware, vehicle certification, software readiness, and regulatory permissions, all of which remain subject to change before 2028.

What should shoppers and current GM owners check before launch?
- Verify the model year and hardware package rather than assuming every ESCALADE IQ has the future feature.
- Check GM’s final operating-domain map and state availability before treating eyes-off driving as useful for a particular commute.
- Read the vehicle’s owner documentation for the exact driver responsibilities, handoff behavior, and restrictions.
- Confirm whether the feature is included, optional, subscription-based, or unavailable on the selected trim.
- Look for separate limits covering weather, construction, lane markings, emergency vehicles, highway exits, and roads outside the supported domain.
- Continue treating current Super Cruise as eyes-on assistance unless GM’s official instructions for a future system say otherwise.

| Highways as the initial operating domain | Exact highway map and mileage coverage |
| Lidar, radar, and cameras in a redundant design | Final sensor suppliers, ranges, and failure responses |
| Centralized computing platform | Final computing configuration and retrofit eligibility |
| Intended expansion to additional gasoline and electric vehicles | Specific later models and rollout dates |
| Longer-term driveway-to-driveway ambition | Whether and when the ambition becomes a production feature |
| State-dependent availability and permissible use | State-by-state permissions, pricing, and subscription terms |
| Eyes-off terminology | Formal SAE J3016 level designation |
Bottom line: GM’s planned 2028 eyes-off, hands-off driving system is a significant future roadmap announcement, with the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ named as the first vehicle and highways as the first operating domain. Current Super Cruise remains hands-free but eyes-on. Until GM publishes final system specifications, operating limits, pricing, state approvals, and an automation-level designation, the 2028 feature should be viewed as a planned capability rather than a currently available self-driving system.
