In April 2022, attackers used login credentials believed to have been stolen from non-GM websites to access some GM online customer accounts. GM said certain personal and vehicle-service-related account information could have been viewed, and some reward points were redeemed for gift cards. The notice did not state how many accounts were affected.
What happened to GM customer accounts?
GM’s customer notice, dated May 16, 2022, said it identified suspicious logins to certain online customer accounts between April 11 and April 29. It also found gift-card reward redemptions that might not have been authorized. GM said it had no evidence that the login information was obtained from GM itself; its working belief was that attackers reused credentials compromised on other, non-GM sites. This was an account-access incident, not evidence that attackers broke into GM’s password database. GM did not publish an affected-account count in its notice, so broader credential-stuffing statistics should not be mistaken for a GM-specific figure.

- First and last name, personal email address, home address, and username.
- Phone numbers for registered family members, uploaded family-member avatars or photos, and a profile picture.
- Last-known and saved favorite locations, search and destination information, and the subscribed OnStar package, if applicable.
- Reward-card activity and information related to points that were fraudulently redeemed.
GM’s notice said the accounts did not contain dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s-license numbers, credit-card information, or bank-account information. That statement describes the accounts involved in this incident; it does not establish what information GM may hold elsewhere.
What is credential stuffing?
Credential stuffing is an attempt to sign in to one service using usernames and passwords stolen from another. It can work when people reuse the same password across accounts: a credential exposed in an unrelated breach may then open a GM account. The New York Attorney General’s Office explains credential stuffing and describes automated login attempts in its guidance. Its figures about other companies and attacks are not counts for GM’s incident.

What did GM do, and what should affected customers do?
GM said it suspended gift-card redemption on its account website, notified affected customers, required them to reset their GM passwords at their next login, reported the activity to law enforcement, and continued monitoring account activity. It also said it would restore reward points redeemed without authorization. The company advised affected customers to reset their GM password and replace any duplicate password used on other sites.

For account protection, GM’s current cybersecurity guidance recommends distinct passwords and provides instructions for enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) on GM.com. - Use a unique password for your GM account and change any reused password on other services.
- Follow GM’s current account instructions to enable MFA if it is available for your account.
- Be wary of unexpected messages asking for your login details; GM advises customers to protect their credentials and change a password that may have been compromised.
- If you received a notice from GM, follow its account-specific instructions and contact GM through an official channel if you need help verifying it.

The April 2022 incident concerned access to online customer accounts through reused credentials and possible reward-point theft. A later Federal Trade Commission matter concerned allegations about GM and OnStar’s collection, use, and sharing of connected-vehicle location and driving-behavior data without adequate notice and consent; the FTC finalized an order in January 2026.
