The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects further global growth in 2026, but its outlook is a projection—not a final result—and regional policy and market conditions matter.
How do the China, Europe and U.S. markets compare?
The figures below are from the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026. Its “electric cars” measure includes battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) unless otherwise specified. Sales and market shares are 2025 results; projections are identified separately.

These are not interchangeable measures: sales volume indicates how many cars were sold, while market share indicates how large electric cars’ place was among all new-car sales. A large market can lead in volume without having the highest share or growth rate.
Which region is growing fastest, and which is largest?
China leads on scale
China’s combination of a very large vehicle market and a high electric-car share makes it the clear leader in sales volume. Its growth rate slowed in 2025, so “largest” does not mean “fastest-growing.” The IEA says trade-in incentives supported demand, although the scheme was temporarily paused in several cities.

Policy support also changed for 2026: China moved from a full purchase-tax exemption to a 50% reduction, subject to eligibility conditions. That change is relevant to the outlook, but it does not by itself determine sales; affordability, available models, and broader market conditions also influence demand.
Europe had the strongest growth among these major markets
The IEA points to stricter EU car CO2 standards taking effect in 2025 as a major factor behind the increase. The standards target a 15% emissions reduction from 2021 levels. This is an EU policy explanation; it should not be applied as though every country in the broader Europe total follows the same rules.

The U.S. ended the year sharply weaker
The timing of the U.S. contraction matters: the full-year result was close to flat, while the steep fall was concentrated in the fourth quarter, after tax credits ended following September 2025. The IEA also notes that some sales had been brought forward. The quarterly drop is a historical result, not by itself a forecast for 2026.
What does the IEA expect in 2026?
The IEA estimates global electric-car sales of 23 million in 2026, equal to 28% of new-car sales. This estimate is based on market trends through the first quarter of 2026 and remains a projection that could change with policy and economic conditions.

- China: The IEA expects electric cars to approach 60% of new-car sales, with slower growth than in earlier years.
- Europe: The IEA projects around 20% sales growth and expects one in three cars sold to be electric.
- United States: The cited IEA material reports the 2025 result and the fourth-quarter decline; it does not establish a comparable 2026 U.S. forecast.
The global estimate follows a year in which electric-car sales grew 20% and exceeded 20 million, reaching one-quarter of new-car sales, according to the IEA’s 2026 executive summary. The projected increase would raise both the number sold and the share of the new-car market.
Why do production and imports matter to the outlook?
Sales growth is not only a story about consumer demand. The location of production and the flow of vehicles across borders affect which models are available in each market and how exposed sales are to trade policy.

- Chinese-made vehicles supplied a growing share of sales outside Europe and the United States. In other markets, imports from China made up 55% of electric-car sales in 2025.
- Imports represented nearly 40% of U.S. electric-car sales in 2025, according to the IEA.
These figures describe different things: the first is China’s share of global production, while the others describe imports’ place in particular sales markets. They should not be treated as a single measure of dependence or added together.

For the IEA’s headline electric-car statistics, the category includes both BEVs, which run on battery power, and PHEVs, which combine a rechargeable battery with an internal-combustion engine. BEVs alone represented 65% of global electric-car sales in 2025. A BEV-only dataset will therefore show a smaller total than this combined measure; comparisons are valid only when the vehicle definitions match.
