For Mustang GTs, Ford Performance’s reference identifies the Gen 2 Coyote with model years 2015–2017 and Gen 3 with 2018–2019. The clearest differences are Gen 2’s breathing-focused revisions and Gen 3’s combined direct- and port-injection fuel system. Those ranges and output figures are application-specific: the F-150’s 5.0L received its own calibration and specifications.
Which Mustang model years are Gen 2 and Gen 3?
In Ford Performance’s 2011–2019 Coyote technical reference, the Mustang GT ranges are:
| Generation | Mustang GT model years in Ford Performance’s reference |
|---|---|
| Gen 2 | 2015–2017 |
| Gen 3 | 2018–2019 |
These are Mustang application ranges, not universal year labels for every vehicle using a 5.0L Coyote. Check the engine and vehicle application when comparing an F-150, a crate engine, or a replacement part; the generations’ broad redesign period overlaps, but specifications and calibration are not interchangeable.
What changed in the Gen 2 Coyote?
Ford Performance says the 2015 Coyote updates focused on helping the engine breathe better, particularly at higher engine speeds. The reference describes a revised cylinder-head casting, ports and combustion chambers, along with larger valves. It also lists BOSS 302-derived sinter-forged connecting rods and piston-top changes to provide valve clearance.

- Easy to install,Please keep the car body dry and clean before installation
- Revised heads and ports: Changes intended to improve airflow.
- Larger valves: Part of the breathing-focused cylinder-head revisions.
- Revised pistons: Piston tops were changed to clear the valves.
- Connecting rods: Ford lists BOSS 302-derived sinter-forged rods.
These are the changes documented in Ford Performance’s reference; it does not establish that every component is a direct swap across all Coyote applications.
What is the Gen 3 fuel-system difference?
The defining change in Ford Performance’s description of the 2018 Mustang engine is a dual-fuel system: high-pressure direct injection combined with low-pressure port fuel injection. Direct injection did not simply replace port injection. Ford describes the two systems working together as part of a thorough engine rework.

- Camshaft Alignment Holding Tool: Compatible with Ford 5.0 Coyote engine 2010-2017; Just used for the Gen 1 & Gen 2 5.0 Coyote engine (2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017)
- Crankshaft Positioning Tool: Compatible with Ford 1993-newer 4.2L V6; 4.6L 2 valve, 4.6L 4-valve V8, 5.4L V8, and 6.8L V10 engines. Replace 303-448, T93P-6303-A, 6024 & 525219
- Function: Camshaft alignment holding tool is used for locking the camshaft in right position when replace timing chain, and crankshaft positioning tool is used to make the crankshaft align and hold on Top Dead Center( TDC ) for correct timing chain installation
- High Quality Material: Made of high quality steel and has been forged and heat-treated multiple times, it is very sturdy and durable, and also has the characteristics of anti-corrosion, which is not easy to damage
- Tips for Use: These engines are not freewheel engines. Do not rotate the crankshaft and/or camshaft when removing the timing chain and installing the cylinder head. If “timing jump” occurs, it will cause damage to the valves and/or pistons, requiring the cylinder head to be removed.
The distinction matters when identifying or sourcing components. A Gen 3 engine’s fuel-system architecture is different from the earlier Mustang generations, so confirm the exact year and application before choosing parts or planning a conversion.
How do Mustang output figures compare?
Ford Performance’s catalog lists its 2018 Mustang-specification Gen 3 crate engine, model M-6007-M50C, at 460 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 420+ lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. The catalog specifies premium fuel. These are figures for that crate-engine configuration, not a universal rating for every Gen 3 Coyote or a like-for-like output table for Gen 2.

The catalog identifies the engine as an all-aluminum 5.0L, 32-valve DOHC unit with direct and port injection, Ti-VCT and 12.0:1 compression. Ford’s catalog listing is the relevant reference for that specific crate engine; do not apply its rating to another vehicle or calibration without confirmation.

No. Ford’s 2017 announcement for the 2018 F-150 says its naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 received advanced dual port and direct injection, and reports gains of 10 horsepower and 13 lb-ft over the preceding version. Those are gains for the revised F-150 engine, not Mustang output figures. The announcement does not provide a Mustang comparison table. See the Ford Media Center announcement for the truck-specific context.

Are Gen 2 and Gen 3 parts interchangeable?
Do not assume so from the generation name alone. Ford Performance’s listing for a Gen 3 Mustang passenger-side cylinder head says it has improved flow compared with 2011–2014 Gen 1 and 2015–2017 Gen 2 cylinder heads. That is a stated flow comparison, not proof that the heads interchange with those earlier applications. Confirm model year, cylinder-head side and fitment against the specific engine before ordering. The Ford Performance cylinder-head listing identifies the product and its stated comparison.
