The Geely Starray EM-i MAX makes a persuasive case for value and versatility if you need a roomy crossover, mostly drive locally and can charge at home. In Stuff’s UK road test, its space, equipment and quiet electric take-off impressed; the soft, bouncy ride was the main letdown. Stuff gave it 4/5.
What the Starray EM-i MAX gets right
Rob Clymo’s Stuff review, published 19 April 2026, describes a practical, medium-sized crossover with generous passenger room and a useful amount of equipment. The reviewer found both front and rear seats spacious, praised the comfortable seating and storage, and noted the glass roof. Stuff lists 528 litres of cargo capacity for the tested MAX trim.
Equipment highlighted in the road test includes a head-up display, wireless phone charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice control and vehicle-to-load (V2L). The review does not establish which features are standard on other trims, so these should not be taken as a trim-by-trim equipment guide.
The ride is the clearest weakness
The biggest reservation is how the car behaves over the road. Clymo found the suspension soft and bouncy, with body roll in corners, and summed it up as: “The wafty ride quality is a bit bouncy in places.” If you value a controlled, composed ride, this is the point to assess carefully on a test drive.

The reviewer also found it easy to spin the wheels when pulling away on damp surfaces. That is a road-test impression, not a measured traction result, but it is worth checking how the car feels in the conditions you commonly drive.
Driving and electric range: what the review reports
Stuff found the electric take-off smooth and quiet, with the petrol engine joining in reasonably unobtrusively. The reviewer describes performance as respectable, but reports no measured fuel-economy figure; the article’s mid-mpg impression should not be treated as a verified consumption result.

For the tested MAX, Stuff’s 2026 specification table gives an 18.4 kWh battery and 51 miles of electric-mode range. Those are published figures cited by Stuff, not independently verified manufacturer specifications. Actual electric distance will depend on conditions and use; the review does not provide a real-world range test figure.

Stuff names the UK trims as Pro, Max and Ultra, says the range starts just under £30,000, and puts Ultra at around £33,000. These are the prices reported in that 2026 article, not a confirmation of current offers or a complete price list.
Charging: distinguish the MAX figure from the broader range claim
Stuff’s general charging discussion says rapid charging reaches up to 30 kW with the smaller battery and up to 60 kW with the larger pack. Its MAX specification table, however, lists 30 kW for the tested car. Do not assume the MAX takes 60 kW: the review does not establish that. It also describes overnight charging at 7 kW, but does not verify current official compatibility, connector details or the equipment and installation required.

The touchscreen-heavy cabin may not suit everyone
The interior’s sparse physical controls are another practical compromise. Clymo found that mirror adjustment and many other functions are handled through the central touchscreen. Drivers who prefer tactile buttons should try common tasks in the car before buying, rather than judging the layout from its equipment list alone.
The reviewer also found the exterior and interior styling forgettable, describing the car as visually interchangeable with several Chinese rivals. That is subjective; the more consequential question for many buyers is whether the cabin controls and ride suit their daily use.

Who should consider it?
The strongest fit suggested by this road test is a driver who has home charging, makes frequent short journeys near home and needs the room of a family crossover. That use can make the electric driving particularly useful, while the passenger space, boot and equipment address everyday practicality.
It is a less obvious fit if you regularly drive long distances without convenient charging, strongly prefer physical controls, or put a composed ride high on your list. The review does not include a structured test against rival cars, so it supports a view of this MAX’s strengths and compromises—not a definitive ranking against competing crossovers.
