GE Aerospace and NASA completed a ground test in 2025 of a modified Passport engine fitted with an integrated hybrid-electric system. The Ohio test demonstrated the system extracting and adding electrical power, but it was not a flight test, did not establish measured fuel savings, and does not mean a production engine is ready for airline service.
What GE and NASA tested
The test took place at GE’s Peebles Test Operation in Ohio, using a modified GE Aerospace Passport engine. NASA’s January 2026 account describes it as the first test of the integrated hybrid engine system, following earlier work on individual components. NASA says the teams are still analyzing the test data. NASA’s account of the test
The system combines a jet-fuel-burning gas turbine with electric motor-generators embedded in the engine. Depending on operating conditions, the equipment can draw power from the engine or inject supplementary electrical power. GE says the architecture can operate with or without energy storage, such as batteries; the 2025 demonstration should not be described as a battery-powered flight. GE Aerospace’s test announcement
What the milestone shows—and what it does not
It moved beyond component testing
Integrating and controlling electrical equipment with a commercial turbofan is a step beyond testing separate parts. GE says the demonstration exceeded NASA’s technical performance benchmarks, which were based on industry input about potential fuel-cost savings and future aircraft power needs. The published accounts do not provide the benchmark values or detailed test results.

It did not demonstrate a flying or production engine
The Passport demonstrator ran on a ground test stand; the sources do not report a flight demonstration of this engine. The test also did not publish a measured fuel-saving figure. Aircraft integration, additional development, and any eventual certification or entry into airline service remain ahead.
Is the 10% fuel-saving figure a test result?
No. NASA’s HyTEC program is pursuing technology that could enable a hybrid engine to burn up to 10% less fuel than today’s best-in-class engines. That is a program goal, not a measured result from the 2025 Passport ground test. NASA says analysis of that demonstration’s data is ongoing. NASA’s HyTEC and test overview

How this fits NASA’s other aircraft-engine work
HyTEC focuses on hybrid engine technology and a compact core with GE. NASA’s separate EPFD project selected GE Aerospace and magniX to mature and flight-demonstrate megawatt-class hybrid-electric propulsion on modified regional turboprop aircraft. EPFD is a distinct effort; its planned flight demonstrations do not mean the Passport hybrid demonstrator has flown. NASA’s hybrid-electric program overview
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When could the technology reach aircraft?
NASA said in May 2024 that HyTEC aimed to have its technology ready for adoption in engines powering next-generation aircraft in the 2030s. That is a development horizon, not a confirmed commercial launch or airline service date. The reviewed announcements give no confirmed entry-into-service date. NASA’s 2024 HyTEC update
