The Subaru models most worth waiting for are the 2027 Subaru Getaway and the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid. The Getaway is the bigger news: a three-row electric SUV with approximately 300 miles of range, 420 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, and up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity. The Forester Wilderness Hybrid is the better wait for buyers who want Subaru’s off-road hardware without giving up hybrid efficiency.
Everyone else has a credible reason to buy now. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid and Forester Hybrid cover the practical hybrid market, while the 2026 Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted are already available electric choices. Subaru’s confirmed near-term strategy is focused on electrified SUVs—not a broad return of rumored models such as a U.S.-market WRX STI or an unconfirmed Outback Hybrid.

The short answer: which future Subaru should you wait for?
| Model | Why it is worth waiting for | Who should consider it | Main uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 Subaru Getaway | Three rows, approximately 300 miles of EV range, 420 hp, standard AWD, towing, and available vehicle-to-home charging | Families that want a larger Subaru EV or an electric alternative to the Ascent | Final U.S. MSRP, EPA range, trim availability, and delivery timing |
| 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid | The first combination of Subaru’s Wilderness equipment and hybrid power | Drivers who combine gravel roads, snow, trails, and long-distance driving | Final EPA ratings, pricing, towing details, and exact arrival timing |
| 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid | Compact size, standard AWD, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and up to 597 miles of estimated range per tank | Buyers who need a compact hybrid Subaru now | Normal inventory and transaction-price variation |
| 2026 Forester Hybrid | More passenger and cargo space than the Crosstrek with an established hybrid configuration | Shoppers who want efficiency but do not need Wilderness equipment | Whether the upcoming Wilderness Hybrid justifies waiting for their use case |
There is an important distinction here: the best reason to wait is not simply that a new model year is approaching. It is that a particular upcoming Subaru adds a capability the current lineup does not yet offer. The Getaway adds a large three-row EV, while the Forester Wilderness Hybrid combines off-road equipment and hybrid power for the first time.

The 2027 Subaru Getaway is officially unveiled and planned for U.S. introduction in the second half of 2026. Subaru’s U.S. material describes it as coming in fall 2026, although that does not necessarily mean every trim or seating configuration will arrive simultaneously.

It is a midsize, three-row battery-electric SUV and Subaru’s fourth global BEV model. Subaru positions it as the largest vehicle in its EV lineup, with seating for up to seven people. That makes it more than a routine update to an existing Subaru: it fills a major gap between the compact Solterra and the brand’s larger gasoline SUVs.
What Subaru has confirmed about the Getaway
| Feature | Published information |
|---|---|
| Powertrain | All-electric drivetrain with 420 horsepower |
| Drive system | Standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive |
| Range | Approximately 300 miles; final EPA certification was not published in the reviewed material |
| Seating | Six- and seven-passenger configurations, depending on trim |
| Ground clearance | 8.3 inches |
| Towing | Up to 3,500 pounds |
| Cargo capacity | Up to 80.6 cubic feet |
| Fast charging | 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes under stated conditions |
| Charging-network compatibility | Compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network |
| Driver assistance | Standard EyeSight technology |
| Vehicle-to-home charging | Listed on the Premium trim |
| U.S. MSRP | Not published on Subaru’s model information as of the research date |
Why the Getaway may be worth the wait
The current Subaru EV choices are smaller or less directly aimed at three-row families. The Getaway addresses that with a significantly larger body, seating for as many as seven, substantially more cargo capacity, and a towing rating that gives it a clearer road-trip and recreational role.
Its combination of approximately 300 miles of range, standard AWD, and 8.3 inches of ground clearance also fits Subaru’s traditional buyer expectations better than an ordinary urban electric crossover would. The 420-hp drivetrain should provide strong acceleration on paper, although ride quality, real-world range, charging performance, and trail behavior cannot be judged until production vehicles are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe available vehicle-to-home capability could be another meaningful differentiator. Subaru lists bidirectional charging on the Premium trim, but buyers should wait for the production vehicle’s hardware requirements, installation instructions, and regional availability before treating it as a complete home-backup solution.
Who should wait for the Getaway?
- Families that need three rows and prefer an EV to a gasoline SUV.
- Current Ascent shoppers who are open to switching from gasoline to battery power.
- Buyers who need more room than the Solterra, Uncharted, or Trailseeker provides.
- Households interested in vehicle-to-home charging, subject to final equipment and installation requirements.
- Drivers who want a Subaru EV for longer trips but find the existing compact EV choices too limiting in size.
Who should not wait for it?
Do not wait for the Getaway if you need a vehicle before its planned late-2026 arrival window, do not have practical access to home or public charging, or specifically want a less expensive compact SUV. The final price could materially change the comparison with the current lineup, and Subaru has not yet published the EPA-certified range, final trim-by-trim equipment, or complete delivery schedule in the reviewed material.
Getaway ownership planning: check charging before buying accessories
EV buyers should first determine where the vehicle will be charged, how quickly it needs to charge, and which connector and cable the production vehicle will use. If you are comparing a NACS EV charging cable, verify the final Getaway’s connector, amperage requirements, included equipment, and compatibility before purchasing. A portable Level 2 EV charger can be useful for some owners, but it requires a suitable electrical circuit and is not automatically necessary for every Subaru EV.
For home charging, get an electrician’s assessment before budgeting for home EV charger installation. The Getaway’s stated fast-charging and Supercharger-network compatibility do not eliminate the need to plan for ordinary overnight charging.
2. 2027 Subaru Forester Wilderness Hybrid: the best wait for off-road hybrid buyers
The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid was officially announced at the 2026 New York International Auto Show. It will be the first Subaru Wilderness model to use Subaru hybrid technology, making it one of the most significant trim-level combinations in the company’s recent lineup.
Today’s 2026 Forester Wilderness gives buyers the rugged suspension, tires, clearance, and protective trim associated with the Wilderness name. The current 2026 Forester Hybrid adds efficiency and range, but it is not the Wilderness version. The 2027 model is therefore not merely a new badge: it brings together two configurations that are currently separate.

Published Forester Wilderness Hybrid details
| Feature | Published information |
|---|---|
| Powertrain | Subaru hybrid system with increased horsepower and on-demand torque compared with the gas Forester Wilderness |
| Drive system | Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive |
| Ground clearance | 9.3 inches |
| Range | Estimated 481 miles per tank |
| Fuel economy improvement | Estimated 25% better city fuel economy than the gas Forester Wilderness |
| Off-road systems | Dual-function X-MODE |
| Hardware | All-terrain tires and Wilderness-specific exterior protection |
| Interior technology | 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 11.6-inch multimedia system |
The word estimated matters. Subaru has published the 481-mile-per-tank and 25%-better-city-fuel-economy figures as estimates where identified, so final EPA ratings may differ. Final pricing, towing information, and exact arrival timing also need to be confirmed when production vehicles and dealer inventory appear.
Why wait for the Wilderness Hybrid?
This is the logical choice for a buyer who uses a vehicle on snowy roads, gravel, forest roads, or moderate trails but does not want the fuel consumption and shorter range associated with a conventional rugged trim. The hybrid system’s increased horsepower and on-demand torque may also make it better suited to low-speed, variable-surface driving, although that is a specification-based expectation rather than a substitute for independent testing.
The 9.3 inches of ground clearance, dual-function X-MODE, all-terrain tires, and additional exterior protection preserve the Wilderness identity. A buyer who chooses the regular Forester Hybrid today would gain established availability and efficiency but would not get this specific equipment package.
Who should wait?
- Drivers who regularly encounter snow, gravel, forest roads, or moderate trails.
- Shoppers considering a 2026 Forester Wilderness but willing to delay their purchase.
- Owners who value longer fuel range and improved city efficiency alongside outdoor capability.
- Buyers who want a more specialized alternative to a conventional hybrid crossover.
Who should buy a current Forester instead?
Buy the current 2026 Forester Hybrid if you need the vehicle now, want a lower-risk purchase with established pricing and availability, and do not need Wilderness equipment. Choose the current gas Forester Wilderness if its off-road hardware is more important than hybrid efficiency or if you need confirmed towing information before the 2027 model’s specifications are finalized.
Do not assume that the hybrid Wilderness will automatically tow more than the gas Wilderness or deliver the same high-speed trail performance. Subaru has not supplied the final towing details in the reviewed material, and hybrid efficiency does not by itself establish off-road capability.
Accessory note for outdoor buyers
A Subaru roof cargo carrier could be useful for a Forester Wilderness Hybrid or Getaway owner who needs extra luggage space, but wait for official production fitment. Roof-rail dimensions, dynamic load ratings, crossbar requirements, and the vehicle’s own roof limits must all be checked before selecting a carrier.
Buy now: current 2026 Subaru hybrids
If your priority is efficient Subaru ownership rather than a specific future configuration, waiting may not improve the decision. Subaru’s current 2026 hybrid lineup already covers the two most practical SUV sizes.
2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is a current model, not an unannounced future vehicle. It pairs Subaru’s compact crossover format with a hybrid-electric drivetrain, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance.
- Up to 38% better city fuel economy than gas models, according to Subaru’s published material.
- Up to 597 miles of range per tank.
- Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid trims.
- Published starting prices of $33,995 for Sport Hybrid and $34,995 for Limited Hybrid, subject to Subaru’s pricing disclaimers and market conditions.
The Crosstrek Hybrid is the sensible choice for someone shopping now who wants the smallest and potentially easiest-to-live-with hybrid Subaru. It is not a replacement for the upcoming Forester Wilderness Hybrid: it has less space and does not provide the Wilderness package.

2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid

- Subaru hybrid drive system paired with a 2.5-liter Boxer engine.

- Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
- Up to 581 miles per tank.
- Subaru vehicle-resource material lists estimated 34/35 mpg for the hybrid configuration; check the exact EPA city/highway rating for the trim and market.
This is the lower-risk purchase compared with waiting for the 2027 Wilderness Hybrid because the current model’s trims, pricing structure, and availability are already established. The trade-off is simple: the 2026 Forester Hybrid provides efficiency and space, while the 2027 Wilderness Hybrid is intended to add specialized capability.
Buy now: current 2026 Subaru EVs
Subaru’s current U.S. EV lineup includes the Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted. These are current choices, not speculative future bets, and they are the immediate alternatives for buyers who want an electric Subaru before the larger Getaway arrives.
2026 Subaru Solterra
The Solterra is Subaru’s established compact EV. Subaru’s U.S. EV information lists a published starting figure of $38,495 and maximum MPGe figures of up to 109/131 in the referenced material. Exact range, equipment, incentives, and inventory can vary by trim, dealer, and time of purchase.
The Solterra is a better fit than the Getaway for buyers who prefer a smaller electric SUV and do not need three rows or 80.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity. It is also the more established option if you would rather avoid waiting for a newly launched model.

The Trailseeker is Subaru’s current midsize EV and the closest existing alternative to the Getaway for buyers who want more space than the Solterra provides. Subaru lists a published starting figure of $39,995 and maximum MPGe figures of up to 107/126 in the referenced material.
Subaru Corporation describes the Trailseeker as the second model in its global BEV lineup after the Solterra. It is produced in Japan on a mixed-model line capable of building battery-electric, gasoline, and hybrid vehicles. That production detail provides context for Subaru’s expanding EV strategy, but it does not make the Trailseeker a three-row vehicle or a substitute for the Getaway’s planned seating and towing package.
2026 Subaru Uncharted
The Uncharted is a current compact EV positioned in a sportier format. It may suit buyers who want an electric Subaru with a smaller footprint and a more performance-oriented presentation, but the reviewed material does not establish it as the choice for maximum passenger room, towing, or three-row use.

What about a future Ascent, Evoltis, Outback Hybrid, or WRX STI?
Ascent/Evoltis for Japan is not a new U.S. model
Subaru Corporation is considering introducing its U.S.-built three-row SUV to Japan in the latter half of 2026. The vehicle is known as the Ascent in North America and Evoltis in other markets.
The possible Japanese-market introduction concerns an existing gasoline SUV, not a newly announced North American replacement. The vehicle uses Subaru’s Global Platform, a 2.4-liter Boxer direct-injection turbo engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, EyeSight, and X-MODE. It is Subaru’s largest vehicle by body size in the referenced announcement.
For U.S. buyers, the Getaway is the more important future three-row story because it is a newly unveiled EV. The Japan-market Evoltis possibility should not be presented as evidence that a redesigned U.S. Ascent is arriving.
WRX STI Sport♯ is real—but Japanese-market and limited
Subaru/STI unveiled the WRX STI Sport♯ as a Japanese-market STI complete car and said limited sales were planned for around spring 2026. The displayed vehicle was identified as a prototype.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Published prototype specifications include a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine, 275 PS, 350 N·m of torque, a six-speed manual transmission, STI-tuned electronic dampers, and Brembo brakes. That is meaningful evidence that Subaru continues developing limited performance products.
It is not confirmation of a U.S.-market 2027 WRX STI. Performance enthusiasts can reasonably watch the Japanese-market Sport♯, but a broader American WRX STI successor remains unconfirmed in the official material reviewed for this article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Subaru’s product strategy suggests
Subaru Corporation’s 2024 management-policy update called for four BEV SUVs by the end of 2026, jointly developed with Toyota. It also said a next-generation hybrid based on Toyota Hybrid System technology would first be used in the Forester and then extended to the Crosstrek.

- Fits Most Vehicles – For Leather & Fabric Seats: Universal fit for most car, SUV, or truck seats. Compatible with both leather and fabric interiors, offering full back seat coverage while maintaining your car’s clean, premium look
The subsequent product announcements fit that plan. The Getaway is identified as the fourth global BEV model, while the U.S. lineup now includes hybrid Crosstrek and Forester models alongside the Solterra, Trailseeker, Uncharted, and upcoming Getaway. The pattern is clear: Subaru’s confirmed near-term growth is SUV-heavy and increasingly electrified.
That strategy makes the Getaway and Forester Wilderness Hybrid more credible waiting targets than rumors about an Outback Hybrid, a redesigned Ascent, or a U.S.-market WRX STI. Those rumored models may eventually appear, but they should not be treated as confirmed purchase choices without stronger primary-source announcements.
Should you buy a Subaru now or wait?
Wait for the 2027 Getaway if:
- You need three rows and want an EV.
- You want approximately 300 miles of stated range, 420 hp, standard AWD, and up to 3,500 pounds of towing.
- You can charge at home or have a reliable public-charging plan.
- You can tolerate an unannounced final price and a planned, rather than guaranteed, launch schedule.
Wait for the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid if:
- You want Wilderness ground clearance, tires, X-MODE, and protection combined with hybrid efficiency.
- You drive regularly on snow, gravel, forest roads, or moderate trails.
- You are considering a 2026 Forester Wilderness but do not need to buy immediately.
Buy a 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid now if:
- You want the most compact hybrid Subaru.
- Up to 597 miles per tank and 8.7 inches of clearance suit your needs.
- You do not need Forester-sized passenger or cargo space.
Buy a 2026 Forester Hybrid now if:
- You need more space than the Crosstrek provides.
- You value an established model more than the upcoming Wilderness combination.
- You do not need all-terrain tires, dual-function X-MODE, or Wilderness-specific protection.
Buy a current EV now if:
- You need an electric vehicle before the Getaway’s planned arrival.
- The compact Solterra or Uncharted, or midsize Trailseeker, already fits your passenger and cargo requirements.
- You have checked charging access and found a current dealer vehicle at an acceptable price.
What to verify before placing a deposit
- Final MSRP and destination charges: The Getaway’s U.S. MSRP was not published in the reviewed material, and future-model pricing can change before production.
- EPA ratings: Treat the Getaway’s approximately 300-mile range and the Forester Wilderness Hybrid’s 481-mile-per-tank figure as published estimates or approximate figures until final certification is available.
- Trim availability: Confirm whether the seating configuration, vehicle-to-home charging, towing equipment, and other desired features are available on the specific trim you can actually order.
- Arrival timing: “Fall 2026” or “second half of 2026” describes a planned introduction, not a guarantee that every dealer will have every version immediately.
- Charging compatibility: Confirm the production vehicle’s connector, included cable, charging rate, Supercharger access procedure, and home electrical requirements.
- Practical capacity: Compare the actual third-row space, cargo room behind all seating rows, roof-load limits, and towing requirements with your own use rather than relying only on headline numbers.
- Market: Make sure information about the Japanese WRX STI Sport♯ or possible Evoltis introduction is not being mistaken for a U.S.-market announcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which future Subaru is most worth waiting for?
For most shoppers, the 2027 Subaru Getaway is the strongest reason to wait because it adds a three-row electric SUV with approximately 300 miles of range, 420 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, and up to 3,500 pounds of towing. The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid is the better choice for buyers who specifically want off-road equipment and hybrid efficiency.
Is the 2027 Subaru Getaway replacing the Ascent?
Subaru has not confirmed that the Getaway is a replacement for the U.S.-market Ascent. The Getaway is a newly unveiled three-row EV, while the Ascent is an existing gasoline SUV. They may appeal to some of the same families, but they are not officially described as a direct replacement.
Is the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid the same as the 2026 Forester Hybrid?
No. The 2026 Forester Hybrid is already available as the efficiency-oriented hybrid model. The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid is a separate configuration that adds Wilderness equipment such as 9.3 inches of ground clearance, dual-function X-MODE, all-terrain tires, and protective exterior trim.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a U.S.-market WRX STI confirmed for 2027?
No. Subaru/STI announced the Japanese-market WRX STI Sport♯ as a limited STI complete car, but that announcement does not confirm a U.S.-market 2027 WRX STI.
Should I buy a Subaru EV now or wait for the Getaway?
Buy a current 2026 Solterra, Trailseeker, or Uncharted if you need an EV before the Getaway’s planned late-2026 introduction or if one of those vehicles already meets your space and range needs. Wait for the Getaway if you specifically need three rows, more cargo capacity, stronger towing capability, or the possibility of vehicle-to-home charging.
The Bottom Line
Wait for the 2027 Subaru Getaway if you want Subaru’s first genuinely spacious three-row EV. Wait for the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid if your priority is trail and winter capability with better hybrid efficiency. Otherwise, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, Forester Hybrid, Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted are already credible choices. Before committing to any future model, verify the final MSRP, EPA figures, trim availability, charging equipment, incentives, and delivery date.
