The agreements were signed at Fraunhofer FFB in Münster during a visit by a South Korean delegation. They do not announce launched joint projects, a schedule or additional funding amounts.
What did Fraunhofer agree with South Korea?
The Fraunhofer Battery Alliance signed two memorandums of understanding (MOUs). One names POSTECH and the city of Pohang as counterparties; the other names K-eco. Partners discussed concrete approaches for future projects at a seminar, but the public announcement describes the research areas as potential fields of cooperation rather than projects already underway. Fraunhofer FFB’s announcement sets out the proposed subject areas, while electrive’s October 6 report likewise notes that specific projects and timelines were not disclosed.

What may the POSTECH and Pohang workstream cover?
This workstream has the broader stated scope. Potential topics range from materials for lithium-ion and next-generation batteries to cell concepts, production technologies, recycling and circularity. The announcement does not assign a particular project or deliverable to any of those areas.
Pohang’s intended administrative and funding support is for joint activities involving local companies and international research collaborations. It is not an announced amount of new funding under the MOU. Fraunhofer describes Pohang as a battery-materials hub; South Korea designated it as one of four national priority locations for the battery industry in July 2023.

What is the K-eco workstream about?
K-eco’s workstream is more specifically centered on used-battery recycling and the materials recovered from that process. The potential research includes characterizing those materials and assuring their quality, alongside approaches that could support compliance with Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, the EU Battery Regulation. The announcement frames regulatory support as an area to explore, not as a certification or compliance outcome already delivered.
How could Fraunhofer FFB’s Münster facility contribute?
Fraunhofer says its FFB PreFab in Münster-Amelsbüren provides testing infrastructure for cell concepts and production technologies under industry-relevant conditions. The stated purpose is to assess scalability and prepare work for larger-scale production. The announcement presents this as relevant infrastructure for the cooperation; it does not identify a specific test campaign or say that a particular partner project has begun there.

Have joint projects, timelines or new funding been announced?
No. The two MOUs establish a framework for future cooperation, and the partners discussed possible approaches at a seminar. The public announcements name no launched joint project, implementation schedule or additional funding amount. Pohang’s intended support is described, but no sum or funding package is specified.
