Forza Horizon 3 is a 2016 open-world racer built around the idea of turning a car festival into a sprawling Australian road trip. Its most distinctive draw is the contrast between a varied base map and two very different expansions: snowy mountain driving in Blizzard Mountain and extravagant stunt tracks in Hot Wheels. A retrospective review by TechRadar in April 2026 praises its approachable, arcade-like handling and environmental variety; that is one writer’s assessment, not a broad critical consensus or a fresh hands-on test.
What is Forza Horizon 3?
Microsoft launched Forza Horizon 3 worldwide on September 27, 2016, for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. It is an open-world racing game in which you run the Horizon Festival, taking events and cars across a condensed version of Australia. Microsoft described the setting as “the most beautiful and diverse setting yet in the series” in its launch announcement.
The launch announcement advertised more than 350 vehicles. That is the count Microsoft gave at launch, not an audit of what is available in a current edition or listing. The game’s premise is less about a conventional championship ladder than about exploring, racing, and expanding the festival across a large landscape.
How varied is the Australian map?
Xbox’s product page describes a compact Australian world that moves between the Outback, rocky canyons, rainforest, beaches, and Gold Coast skyscrapers. That range gives the base game its central appeal: driving can shift from open, dusty stretches to dense greenery, coastal roads, and urban streets without leaving the same festival setting.

The setting is a stylized, condensed version of Australia rather than a literal full-scale map. The official product page also cautions that features may vary between the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions; it does not enumerate those differences.
How does it handle, and who might enjoy it?
TechRadar’s April 2026 retrospective characterizes the handling as approachable and arcade-like, while noting that turning off driving assists offers more depth. The same review praises the environmental variety. These are that reviewer’s judgments rather than measured handling results, and no fresh gameplay or performance testing is available here.

- Video Game Title 6 Bullet 2
- Video Game Title 6 Bullet 3
That description suggests a game suited to players who want accessible racing across an open landscape, with the option to make driving less forgiving by adjusting assists. It is not evidence of a simulation-focused handling model or a quantified comparison with other racing games.
What do the expansions add?
The expansions are not just extra roads in the same style. One changes the conditions and elevation; the other replaces ordinary scenery with an engineered stunt-course fantasy.

| Expansion | Driving environment | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Blizzard Mountain | Snowy, high-elevation playable area | Winter driving and a mountain setting. Microsoft announced it in December 2016 as available to buy separately or through the Expansion Pass. |
| Hot Wheels | Six islands joined by oversized orange track | Looping and banking sections, boost pads, half-pipes, jumps, and mechanical dinosaurs. It launched in May 2017 for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. |
Blizzard Mountain: winter roads and elevation
Blizzard Mountain is the choice for players who want a more grounded change of environment: snow and a high-elevation area reshape the driving backdrop. Its announced purchase options were a standalone purchase or the Expansion Pass, as Microsoft stated in December 2016; those are historical release details, not confirmation of current availability.
Hot Wheels: stunts and spectacle
Hot Wheels is the more overtly fantastical expansion. Forza’s retrospective describes six islands of looping, banked track with boost pads, half-pipes, jumps, and mechanical dinosaurs. It moves away from the base map’s roads and landscapes toward purpose-built courses designed around stunt-like driving.

Is Forza Horizon 3 still worth playing?
Based on the documented design and the cited retrospective, its clearest reasons to play are its varied Australian setting and the way the expansions offer sharply different driving fantasies. The base game covers coast, rainforest, outback, and city; Blizzard Mountain shifts to snow and elevation; Hot Wheels goes all-in on stunts and spectacle. Whether that package is worth seeking out now depends on a practical question the available evidence cannot settle: whether a legitimate copy is available for your platform and at an acceptable price.
Current digital listing status, prices, physical stock and condition, and online-service status have not been established here. If looking for a copy, check a live listing carefully, including seller, disc or package condition, and compatibility with your platform. Xbox’s product page notes that features may vary between Xbox One and Windows 10 PC; it does not specify the differences.
