The Ford 3.5-liter EcoBoost does not have one universally bad model year. Its trouble spots changed when Ford moved from the first-generation engine to the redesigned second-generation version, and the same engine designation appeared in different vehicles at different times.
For a used F-150, owners most often warn about 2011–2012, while Ford service documents identify timing-chain and cam-phaser concerns extending through 2015. The second-generation engine brought a separate cam-phaser problem affecting many 2017–2020 F-150s and 2018–2020 Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators.
The safest way to shop is not to reject a vehicle by year alone. Check the VIN, confirm the engine generation, inspect the truck after a long cold soak, and demand invoices for major timing or cam-phaser work.
Quick answer: which 3.5 EcoBoost years deserve caution?
| Vehicle and years | Main concern | Buying approach |
|---|---|---|
| 2011–2012 F-150 | Charge-air-cooler moisture-related hesitation or misfire; early timing-chain and cam-phaser complaints | Highest caution. Buy only with strong records and a clean cold-start and road test |
| 2013–2015 F-150 | Timing-chain and variable-cam-timing noise on affected vehicles, particularly those built on or before May 29, 2015 | Potentially reasonable if the timing system has been repaired or the engine is quiet after an overnight soak |
| 2016 F-150 | First-generation engine concerns remain, although it is not part of the later 2017–2020 cam-phaser program | Evaluate maintenance history and cold-start behavior carefully |
| 2017–2020 F-150 | Second-generation cam-phaser rattle, hot-idle knock, and related repairs | Do not buy without checking campaign and repair history |
| 2018–2020 Expedition/Navigator | Second-generation cam-phaser concerns | Use the VIN to verify eligibility and completed repairs |
There is no model year that guarantees failure. A 2012 with documented timing-system work can be a better purchase than an untouched 2015 that rattles on startup. Likewise, a 2018 with documented cam-phaser replacement deserves more confidence than a low-mileage vehicle with no service records.

Why the engine generation matters
In the F-150, the first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost continued through the 2016 model year. Ford introduced the second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost in the 2017 F-150. That redesign included a dual-chain cam drive, revised lower-end components, updated valve-train hardware, revised turbochargers, and—on the high-output version—dual port and direct fuel injection.
The second-generation engine arrived in the 2018 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. As a result, the phrase “2017 3.5 EcoBoost” is not enough to identify the engine. A 2017 F-150 and a 2017 Expedition may not contain the same generation. Always identify the vehicle, engine version, and VIN before applying a model-year reputation.
2011–2012 F-150: the years owners most often avoid
Owner discussions frequently single out the 2011 and 2012 F-150 3.5 EcoBoost as the riskiest years. Forum reports are anecdotal and do not establish a precise failure rate, but these early trucks have two documented areas that deserve attention.
Charge-air-cooler moisture and hesitation
NHTSA investigated 2011–2013 F-150s with the 3.5-liter gasoline turbocharged direct-injection engine after complaints of intermittent misfire during hard acceleration at highway speeds. The investigation identified moisture accumulation in the charge-air cooler during extended highway driving in humid or damp conditions, with 2011–2012 vehicles particularly represented.
The investigation summary reported 95 related complaints and an estimated vehicle population of approximately 400,000. It reported no injuries in the investigation material. This was not proof that every truck had a defective intercooler, but it explains why early F-150 owners commonly mention the issue.
During a test drive, watch for:
- Sudden hesitation or loss of power while passing or merging.
- A flashing check-engine light during boost.
- Misfire codes, especially after the truck has been driven for a while in damp weather.
- Evidence of a PCM calibration or charge-air-cooler-related repair.
- Aftermarket intercooler or charge-air plumbing modifications that make diagnosis more difficult.
A short trip around a dealership may not reproduce a problem associated with extended highway driving. If possible, include a longer road test and scan for stored and pending codes.
Timing-chain and cam-phaser noise
Early EcoBoost trucks can also develop a brief rattle, ticking, or tapping noise from the upper front of the engine after sitting overnight. Ford TSB 18-2305 covers certain 2011–2015 F-150 3.5-liter EcoBoost vehicles built on or before May 29, 2015. The bulletin describes noise lasting approximately two to five seconds after a cold soak of at least six hours.

For affected 2011–2014 vehicles, Ford’s repair procedure includes replacing all four variable-camshaft-timing units and the primary timing chain. The listed labor operation is 9.2 hours; the bulletin lists 9.0 hours for 2015 vehicles. Actual repair bills vary by shop, parts, region, and additional damage, but this is not a minor diagnostic item.
Do not let a seller warm up the truck before you arrive. A cold-start inspection is one of the most valuable checks on an early 3.5 EcoBoost.
2013–2015 F-150: improved, but not automatically safe
Many owners view the 2013–2015 trucks as more mature than the first two years. That does not remove the timing-system concern. Ford’s bulletin still includes affected vehicles in this range, and build date matters more than the model-year badge. A late-built 2015 may not fall into the same population as an early-built 2015.
Before buying one, ask for documentation showing:
- Whether the timing chain, tensioner, and cam phasers were replaced.
- Whether the engine was quiet after sitting overnight.
- Which oil grade was used and how often the oil was changed.
- Whether the truck was tuned or fitted with upgraded turbos.
- Whether it has a history of misfires, turbo repairs, or charge-air-cooler work.
A repaired 2014 or 2015 can be a sensible used-truck purchase. The greater risk is an undocumented vehicle that produces the characteristic cold-start rattle.
2016 F-150: a transition-year candidate
The 2016 F-150 still uses the first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost. It is not generally included in Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03, the later cam-phaser program covering certain 2017–2020 F-150s.

That does not make 2016 problem-free. It remains part of the first-generation family, so the buyer should investigate timing-chain and cam-phaser noise, maintenance quality, and any evidence of hard use. A quiet cold start and complete service file matter more than the year alone.
2017–2020 F-150: a redesigned engine with a different cam-phaser problem
The second-generation 3.5 EcoBoost addressed some first-generation design issues but introduced a separate, documented cam-phaser concern. Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 21B10 covered certain 2017–2020 F-150s and 2018–2020 Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators. The program addressed cam-phaser rattle through PCM reprogramming.

Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03 covered cam-phaser replacement for qualifying vehicles. Ford’s instructions called for replacement of all four variable-camshaft-timing units. Reported symptoms included:
- Rattle when starting a cold engine.
- Knocking at hot idle.
- Noise from the upper front section of the engine cover.
A related Ford bulletin describes a two-to-five-second noise after the engine has been cold-soaked for at least six hours. That makes a cold-start inspection essential on these vehicles as well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese were customer programs, not ordinary safety recalls
Listings for 21B10 and 21N03 are often called recalls online, but Ford identified them as Customer Satisfaction Programs, not safety recalls. Their mileage and time conditions applied, and a later supplement stated that extended coverage ran to January 1, 2023, subject to specified conditions.
Those deadlines have passed. In 2026, do not assume Ford will pay for a cam-phaser repair simply because the vehicle falls within the original model-year range. Ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN and confirm whether any coverage remains. Also request the vehicle’s service history to see whether the repair was already completed.
Should 2017 and 2018 be avoided more than 2019 and 2020?
Owners often complain most loudly about 2017 and 2018 trucks, but Ford’s official programs cover the broader 2017–2020 F-150 range. It is therefore inaccurate to label only 2017 or 2018 as affected.
A 2020 is not automatically safe because it is the final year in the program population. Conversely, a 2017 is not automatically a bad purchase if the cam phasers were replaced and the engine passes inspection. Check whether PCM reprogramming was performed as well. Ford issued a related program addressing reports of transmission shudder after the reprogramming, so the repair history and post-repair drivability both matter.

1. Check the VIN before negotiating
Use the VIN to check open recalls, manufacturer campaigns, dealer service history, and eligibility. NHTSA’s recalls-and-investigations search tool is useful for safety campaigns, but manufacturer program eligibility must be confirmed by VIN. Model-year assumptions are not enough.

2. Insist on a genuine cold start
The truck should have been parked for at least several hours. Listen closely during the first few seconds:
| Observed symptom | What it may indicate |
|---|---|
| Two-to-five-second metallic rattle from the timing-cover area | Timing-chain, tensioner, or cam-phaser concern |
| Knock at hot idle | Possible second-generation cam-phaser problem |
| Rough running or misfire under boost | Possible charge-air-cooler moisture, ignition, fuel, or turbo issue |
A rattle does not prove that the engine is about to fail, but it is not a noise to dismiss as normal EcoBoost behavior. Have a qualified shop diagnose it before completing the purchase.
3. Scan the truck and drive it under load
Use a scan tool to check stored and pending misfire codes, even if the dashboard light is off. During a safe road test, include moderate and hard acceleration and highway merging. Confirm that boost builds smoothly and watch for hesitation, loss of power, smoke, unusual turbo noise, oil leaks, or coolant loss.

4. Look for modifications
Ask whether the truck has ever been tuned or fitted with upgraded turbos, an aftermarket intercooler, or modified charge-air plumbing. Modifications do not automatically condemn the vehicle, but they can increase stress and complicate the diagnosis of a misfire or boost problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which years do owners commonly prefer?
Owner discussions often point to 2015–2016 F-150s as a compromise: they avoid the earliest 2011–2012 reputation while preceding the second-generation 2017–2020 cam-phaser program. That is a buying preference, not statistical proof that these are the most reliable years.
The practical comparison is condition versus reputation:
- A 2012 with documented timing-system repairs may be preferable to an untouched 2015 that rattles.
- A 2018 with documented cam-phaser replacement may be preferable to a low-mileage 2017 with no records.
- A 2020 still needs inspection because it falls within the documented cam-phaser program population.
Common claims that need qualification
- “Only 2011–2012 EcoBoost engines have serious problems.”
- Incomplete. Ford documented first-generation timing concerns through affected 2015 vehicles and later documented cam-phaser programs covering 2017–2020 F-150s and 2018–2020 Expedition/Navigator vehicles.
- “The 2017–2020 cam-phaser issue was a recall.”
- Usually incorrect terminology. Ford’s documents identify 21B10 and 21N03 as Customer Satisfaction Programs rather than safety recalls.
- “Every cold-start rattle means catastrophic engine failure.”
- Overstated. Rattle is a symptom requiring diagnosis, not proof of catastrophic failure. It is still significant because Ford published specific repair procedures for it.
- “A 2020 is automatically safe.”
- Unsupported. The documented cam-phaser program included 2020 vehicles in the stated coverage populations.
Best buying recommendation
For a used F-150, the most conservative choices are a 2015–2016 with complete maintenance records and no cold-start rattle, or a 2017–2020 with documented cam-phaser work and a clean inspection.

FAQ
What are the worst years for the Ford 3.5 EcoBoost?
Owners most commonly caution against the 2011–2012 F-150, while Ford documents timing concerns on some 2011–2015 trucks and cam-phaser concerns on certain 2017–2020 F-150s. No year is automatically defective.
Is the 2016 F-150 3.5 EcoBoost reliable?
The 2016 F-150 uses the first-generation 3.5 EcoBoost and is not generally included in the later 2017–2020 cam-phaser program. It still requires a cold-start inspection, a scan for misfire codes, and proof of regular oil changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How can I tell if a 3.5 EcoBoost has a cam-phaser problem?
Listen for a two-to-five-second metallic rattle after the engine has been parked for at least six hours. A hot-idle knock or noise from the upper front engine cover is also a warning sign. Have a qualified technician confirm the cause.
Were the Ford 3.5 EcoBoost cam-phaser repairs a recall?
Ford identified the major 2017–2020 F-150 and 2018–2020 Expedition/Navigator campaigns as Customer Satisfaction Programs 21B10 and 21N03, not standard safety recalls. Check the VIN with a Ford dealer because the original time and mileage conditions may have expired.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat 2011–2012 F-150s as the highest-risk early years, inspect 2013–2016 trucks for first-generation timing noise, and verify cam-phaser repairs on 2017–2020 F-150s and 2018–2020 Expeditions/Navigators. A documented repair history and a true cold-start test are more valuable than an internet “best year” list.
