Yes. On August 7, 2024, Dirk Müller lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a 2025 Ford Mustang GTD in 6:57.685. Ford announced the result on December 10, 2024, calling it the first car from an American brand to complete a lap under seven minutes. It was a landmark, but it is no longer the latest Mustang GTD benchmark: Ford later reported a 6:52.072 production-class time and a 6:40.835 lap by the GTD Competition in a separate pre-production/prototype category.
What was the Mustang GTD’s sub-seven-minute Nürburgring time?
The original milestone was 6:57.685, set by Dirk Müller on August 7, 2024, in a 2025 Mustang GTD. Ford’s December 2024 announcement described it as the first car from an American brand to lap the Nordschleife in less than seven minutes. Ford also said at the time that the 815-horsepower GTD was the fifth-fastest stock production sports car and the sixth car in its class to break seven minutes; those were rankings reported at that announcement, not current rankings. Ford’s December 2024 account
The wording matters: Ford’s U.S. announcement said “first car from an American brand.” That is not the same claim as first American-made car, and the 2024 time should not be presented as the GTD’s current fastest reported lap.
How the GTD’s reported Nürburgring times compare
| Time | Car and driver | Category and context |
|---|---|---|
| 6:57.685 | 2025 Mustang GTD, Dirk Müller; lap dated August 7, 2024 | Original sub-seven-minute milestone announced by Ford in December 2024; Ford described the car as stock. |
| 6:52.072 | Mustang GTD; driver not stated in Ford Racing’s 2026 report | Ford Racing identifies this as the GTD’s previous Nürburgring Production Class benchmark. |
| 6:40.835 | Mustang GTD Competition, Dirk Müller | Ford Racing reports this in the Nürburgring Pre-Production / Prototype Class, not the production class. |
| 6:49.337 | Mustang GTD Competition, Ford engineer Steve Thompson | Additional reported Competition lap; Ford says Thompson had accumulated fewer than 40 Nürburgring laps. |
The later figures come from Ford Racing’s April 16, 2026 report. They are not interchangeable: the 6:40.835 result belongs to a different GTD version and category than the original 2024 production-car milestone.

Why Nürburgring lap times need a class and course
The full Nordschleife configuration used for an official record lap is 20.832 km, with a flying start. The circuit says that since 2019 it confirms and publishes official lap records. Its procedure includes calibrated timekeeping, notary supervision of official record attempts, and documentation of a vehicle’s standard condition by a neutral testing organization. Vehicle categories follow definitions from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority; racing cars, special vehicles and prototypes are handled differently from series-production classes. See the Nürburgring’s Record Drives explanation.
For a meaningful comparison, check the lap date, full-course configuration, vehicle version, driver and class. A prototype-category time may be quicker than a production-class time without replacing it as a production-car benchmark.

Was the 2024 Mustang GTD a stock car?
Ford described the 2024 lap car as stock, while noting that it carried circuit-mandated motorsports safety equipment: a competition seat, five-point harness and roll cage. “Stock” therefore did not mean the car was stripped of required safety modifications.
Ford also said the road-car GTD is not subject to GT3 regulations. It specifically cited that freedom in connection with carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, a supercharger and semi-active suspension. The Nürburgring lap car was not a GT3 race car.

What changed for the faster GTD Competition?
Ford Racing attributes the Competition’s improvement over the prior 6:52.072 production-class benchmark to four broad areas:
- Engine: revised hardware and tuning.
- Aerodynamics: revised wing, front dive planes and rear carbon-fiber aero discs.
- Tires: high-performance tires.
- Weight: magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats, a lighter damper system and other measures.
Ford described the GTD Competition as a limited, serialized, street-legal special edition. The reported lap does not by itself establish current availability or customer delivery timing.
