When Ford Maverick owners say their trucks are “turning on at random,” do they mean the engine is starting, or that lights, a screen, or the remote-start system is waking up? Those are different symptoms. The official Ford and government records reviewed for this story do not establish a general Maverick defect that starts the engine by itself. They describe separate taillamp, battery-detection, and 12-volt battery-drain issues—not spontaneous engine starts.
What does “turning on” mean?
Before connecting an event to a recall or service bulletin, identify what actually activated. A lit display or exterior lamp is not the same as an engine running, and an equipped Maverick can have remote start controlled through FordPass. Ford’s recall notice confirms that remote-start control is a vehicle feature on equipped vehicles; it does not say remote start caused random-activation reports. - Was the engine audibly running, or were only the lights or screen awake?
- Was the key nearby, and did FordPass show a remote-start control or notification?
- Did the event occur after a vehicle software update, and were any warning messages displayed?
These questions help a dealer investigate the specific event; they do not establish a cause on their own.
What the documented Maverick issues actually involve
The official records below describe different model-year and powertrain circumstances. None should be treated as a diagnosis for an unexplained activation.

How to check your truck and report the symptom
- Check recall status by VIN. Campaign applicability depends on the specific vehicle. A model year or a similar symptom alone does not show whether a recall applies or whether its repair was completed.
- Describe exactly what activated. Tell the dealer whether the engine was running, only the lamps or display came on, or the vehicle showed a remote-start indication. Note when it happened and where the key was.
- Share relevant history. Include the model year, trim, powertrain, software or module update history, FordPass notifications, and any warning messages.
- Ask for diagnosis and campaign verification. Have the dealer check the VIN and investigate the reported behavior. Do not infer that one of the documented recalls explains an event it does not cover.
What is established—and what is not
Ford’s recall notice says a safety defect exists in certain 2022–2024 Mavericks, but the defect it describes is the taillamp software issue—not an engine that starts by itself. The reviewed official records establish specific lamp, stall/no-restart, and battery-drain concerns. They do not confirm a general random-engine-start defect or provide a verified owner count for such reports.
