Ford received a $577,655 Michigan grant to evaluate ways to cut emissions at its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne. The study, conducted with Newlab, is an assessment—not an announced factory upgrade—and Michigan’s grant notice does not name a technology or forecast plant-level emissions reductions.
What the Ford grant will fund
Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) announced the $577,655 award on September 28, 2026. Ford Motor Company will work with Newlab to evaluate decarbonization pathways at Michigan Assembly Plant. The $578,000 figure in the headline rounds the exact award to the nearest thousand.

“Evaluate decarbonization pathways” means the project is a study. EGLE’s announcement does not say that Ford has chosen a solution, committed to construction, or promised a particular emissions result. It gives no project schedule, plant-level emissions baseline, or forecast reduction, and does not detail how work is divided between Ford and Newlab.
What is known—and not known—about the study
EGLE says the broader challenge’s studies may examine options such as electrifying industrial process heat or modernizing buildings and utility systems, and assess emissions, energy costs, workforce needs, and community effects. Those are program-wide descriptions; the announcement does not identify which pathways or assessment areas apply specifically to Ford’s project.

How the award fits Michigan’s industrial climate effort
The Ford award is one of five made through EGLE’s MI Healthy Climate Challenge #4: Go Big, Go Clean. The five awards total $1,882,750. EGLE describes the challenge as supporting facility-specific studies to help manufacturers consider emissions reductions and energy costs while assessing related operational and community factors.
EGLE also announced the Michigan Industrial Clean Innovation Partnership (MI ICIP), a peer-led coalition convened by the Great Plains Institute to help industrial facilities share practical solutions and move feasibility studies toward implementation. The partnership is part of the state’s broader effort, but EGLE does not say MI ICIP is conducting Ford’s study.

Which Ford facility is involved?
Ford identifies Michigan Assembly Plant as a Wayne, Michigan, facility that builds the Ranger and Bronco. That is useful context about the plant, not evidence that the grant study is tied to either vehicle or its production line. The stated focus is plant operations.

Ford’s 2024 Integrated Sustainability and Financial Report estimated that carbon-free electricity for all of the company’s manufacturing locations in Michigan would avoid close to 600,000 metric tons of CO2e annually. That is a companywide Michigan estimate in a 2024 report—not a projected outcome of the newly announced Michigan Assembly Plant study. The figures concern different scopes and dates.

What the announcement says about the goal
EGLE Director Phil Roos said the challenge helps manufacturers find facility-specific ways to reduce emissions and energy costs while remaining competitive, and that the partnership can help companies address the work together. Ford sustainability executive Mary Wroten said the study with Newlab would help identify opportunities for carbon reductions and inform investments in Ford’s operations and communities. These statements describe the organizations’ aims; they are not evidence of reductions already achieved.
