Ford’s upcoming midsize electric pickup is called the Fathom, and its announced standard-range starting MSRP is $28,350. Ford says pre-orders begin in early 2027. The truck is intended to make Ford more competitive on EV cost, but its range, charging, towing and payload figures have not yet been published—so a direct comparison with global rivals is not yet possible.
What Ford has announced about the Fathom
Ford named the Fathom on August 6, 2026, describing it as the first planned vehicle on its Universal EV Platform. The current starting price is an announced MSRP for the standard-range version, not an out-the-door price. Ford’s August 2025 target had been about $30,000; the newer $28,350 figure supersedes that earlier target. Ford’s Fathom announcement says the MSRP excludes taxes, title, registration and fees.
| Item | What Ford has said |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | Fathom, a midsize electric pickup and the first planned Universal EV Platform vehicle |
| Starting price | $28,350 MSRP for the standard-range model, excluding taxes, title, registration and fees |
| Pre-orders | Begin in early 2027, according to Ford |
| Delivery timing | Reuters reported customer deliveries beginning in autumn 2027; Ford’s naming announcement confirms preorder timing, not that delivery date |
| Markets | Ford’s 2025 plan described U.S. assembly and U.S. and export markets; specific export countries, prices and launch dates have not been established in the reviewed announcements |
Ford’s August 11, 2025 Universal EV Platform announcement said the four-door truck was planned for assembly in Louisville and targeted for launch in 2027. Reuters’ separate August 10, 2026 report supplies the autumn delivery forecast; treat it as reporting rather than a Ford-confirmed date.
What the truck is expected to offer
Ford projects room for five adults and says passenger volume will exceed that of a Toyota RAV4. The planned layout includes both a front trunk, or frunk, and a pickup bed. These are Ford’s projections and feature descriptions, not independently measured cabin or cargo figures.

Ford also lists a large, high-resolution touchscreen, digital key, bidirectional power capability, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The truck is expected to include hardware capable of supporting Ford’s next-generation BlueCruise driver-assistance feature. Ford describes activated BlueCruise as hands-off, eyes-on driving on designated highways; it is not autonomous driving. The announcement does not establish the final trim lineup or all equipment by version.
Why Ford says its platform can reduce costs
Ford’s affordability argument rests on how it designs and builds the vehicle, not just on the announced MSRP. In its 2025 platform release, Ford said the planned process builds the front, rear and structural battery sections separately, then joins them late in production. It also described the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack as structural and as part of the vehicle floor. Ford said it planned production in Michigan; this describes a company plan, not completed production.
Ford’s published platform and production claims, all from Ford Motor Company in 2025, are:

- 20% fewer parts per vehicle.
- 25% fewer fasteners.
- 40% fewer workstations from dock to dock.
- 15% faster assembly time.
- A wiring harness more than 4,000 feet (1.3 kilometers) shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than the harness Ford says it used in its first-generation electric SUV.
These are Ford’s descriptions of its platform and planned production process, not third-party measurements of Fathom’s retail cost savings or independent tests of a customer vehicle. A lower MSRP is a concrete announced price; the manufacturing claims explain Ford’s intended cost approach but do not by themselves establish the truck’s final cost of ownership.

Ford is positioning the Fathom as part of a lower-cost EV strategy. Reuters reported that Ford aims to compete with rivals including Tesla and China’s BYD. Axios reported Ford executives’ concern about Chinese manufacturers’ costs, technology and expansion across markets. Those reports establish the strategic context, not a verified product-to-product win or a quantified global market-share claim.
A meaningful comparison needs more than a base price. Buyers and analysts would need comparable figures for:

Most of those Fathom details remain unpublished in the reviewed official announcements. Until Ford releases them, its announced price supports an affordability pitch, but not a conclusion that it beats competitors on range, utility or value across countries.
How the Fathom differs from Ford’s next F-150 Lightning
Ford said on December 15, 2025, that production of the current F-150 Lightning generation had concluded and that the next-generation Lightning would use an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) architecture. The Fathom is a separate, midsize battery-electric pickup program on the Universal EV Platform; it should not be confused with the next, range-extended F-150 plan. Ford’s portfolio announcement describes the Lightning change.

Ford’s 2025 platform release said detailed specifications would come later, and the reviewed product announcements do not establish the Fathom’s final battery capacity, EPA range, charging connector or rates, towing capacity, payload, trim details, or full export-market availability. Those omissions matter because they determine whether the pickup fits a buyer’s driving, work and charging needs—and whether price comparisons with vehicles sold in other countries are fair.

Ford chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field characterized the intended product as: “This isn’t a stripped-down, old-school vehicle.” That is Ford’s positioning for the Fathom, rather than independent evidence of its equipment or performance. Ford’s 2025 announcement contains the statement.
In February 2026, Ford CEO Jim Farley told Axios: “We are in a global competition with China — and it’s not just EVs. And if we lose this, we do not have a future at Ford.” This is Farley’s account of the stakes for Ford, not proof of how the Fathom will perform against any particular competitor. Axios reported the comments.
