Its engine choices changed by year, and the often-cited 800-pound capacity applies specifically to the 1963 Ranchero—not every Falcon-era model.
When did the Ranchero become a Falcon—and when did it stop?
The Ranchero name began in Ford’s Fairlane lineup in 1957. Ford restyled the vehicle to align with the Falcon family in 1960, and it remained in the Falcon line through 1966. The Falcon Club describes Ford as beginning to market the Ranchero separately in 1966; the formal return to the Fairlane line came in 1967. Those are related but distinct milestones: 1966 is the end of its Falcon-line association, while 1967 marks the Fairlane realignment. Falcon Club of America history
What engines came in a Ford Falcon Ranchero?
Engine availability depended on model year. The documented Falcon-era milestones below provide context, but they are not a complete factory-option chart for every Ranchero year.
| Model year or period | Documented engine milestone | Scope and source |
|---|---|---|
| 1961 | 170-cubic-inch six-cylinder offered as an option | Broad Falcon timeline; not an exhaustive Ranchero option listing. Ford Falcon Registry |
| 1963 | 170-cubic-inch six-cylinder | Listed on the Falcon Club’s 1963 Ranchero page. Falcon Club of America |
| 1963½ | 260-cubic-inch V8 option | Announced for the 1963½ Falcon product line; the 1963 Ranchero page describes it as introduced mid-year. Ford Falcon Registry and Falcon Club of America |
| 1964 | 200-cubic-inch six-cylinder added | Broad Falcon timeline; confirm Ranchero fitment against year-specific factory material. Ford Falcon Registry |
| 1965 | 289-cubic-inch V8 option replaced earlier 260 versions in the Falcon timeline | Broad Falcon timeline, not a complete Ranchero-by-year chart. Ford Falcon Registry |
In broad terms, early Falcon-era Rancheros used Falcon six-cylinder engines, with V8 choices appearing during the period. A model’s year matters: do not assume a displacement listed for the Falcon line was available on every Ranchero in that year.

How much could a Falcon Ranchero carry?
The Falcon Club’s historical 1963 Ranchero page states an “800-lb. capacity.” Treat that as the 1963 model-page figure only; it does not establish a payload rating for other Falcon Ranchero years or a current safe or legal load limit. Falcon Club of America’s 1963 Ranchero page
For a specific vehicle, consult year-appropriate Ford documentation and account for its actual condition before carrying a load. The 1960–1963 Ford shop manual identifies Ranchero as a body type and includes model-year, engine, and body-identification information. Ford notes that its specifications were those in effect when the manual was approved for printing and reserves the right to change them. Use documentation that covers the exact model year rather than relying on a general Falcon timeline. 1960–1963 Ford Falcon shop manual

How can you verify a particular Ranchero’s engine and specifications?
- Establish the model year. Start with the vehicle’s identification data, not a seller’s description or a general model-history summary.
- Check year-specific Ford material. Use a shop manual, brochure, or specification sheet covering that exact year; the 1960–1963 shop manual is useful only within its stated coverage.
- Compare the vehicle’s identification information with the documentation. Ford’s manual includes engine and body-identification material, but its stated specifications reflect the time it was approved for printing.
- Confirm the individual vehicle’s condition and configuration. Historical option availability alone does not prove which engine is currently installed or what load the vehicle can safely carry.
For comparisons between two Rancheros, keep model year, Falcon or Fairlane identity, engine displacement, and the year attached to any payload figure together. A figure or option associated with one year should not be carried over to another without year-specific evidence.
