The Ford Expedition has five generations, spanning the 1997 through 2025 model years and continuing today. Ford says the SUV debuted in 1996, but its 2026 history says it first rolled off the assembly line in 1997: the launch year and first model year are not the same. The key model-year breaks are 1997, 2003, 2007, 2018 and 2025.
Ford Expedition generations by model year
| Generation | U.S. model years | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1997–2002 | F-150-based, full-size SUV with V8 power. Ford says the Expedition first rolled off the assembly line in 1997. Ford, 2026 |
| Second | 2003–2006 | Ford identifies 2003 as the second generation and highlights independent rear suspension as an advance in ride comfort. Ford, 2026 |
| Third | 2007–2017 | Ford associates the generation with SYNC technology. The 2015 model added a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. Ford, 2026 Ford, 2014 |
| Fourth | 2018–2024 | Introduced in 2017 and designated the 2018 model year. Ford refers to it as the fourth generation. Ford, 2021 |
| Fifth | 2025–present | The redesigned 2025 Expedition is the fifth generation. It is offered in standard and extended-length MAX versions. Ford, 2024 |
These ranges use U.S. model-year conventions. Ford’s timeline says the fourth generation was introduced in 2017; 2018 is its first model year. The fifth generation begins with model year 2025.
Why Expedition debut and model year can differ
Ford describes the Expedition as debuting in 1996, while its 2026 anniversary history says it first rolled off the assembly line in 1997. For a model-year lookup, use 1997 as the first year. The distinction is between the vehicle’s debut and the model-year designation, not a conflicting generation boundary. Ford, 2026 Ford Expedition
The key changes that mark the generations
1997: first-generation launch
The first Expedition was a full-size, F-150-based SUV with V8 power. Ford’s anniversary account describes its 1997 assembly-line start as part of the model’s entry into the segment. Ford, 2026

How to identify the right generation for a specific Expedition
- Check the model year. Use the year assigned to the vehicle, not the date it was announced or first shown. Match it to the ranges in the table.
- Confirm the body length. Earlier Expeditions used the EL name for the extended body; newer versions use MAX. Do not assume that standard and extended models share every dimension or specification.
- Check trim and drivetrain. Engine, transmission, equipment and rear-wheel-drive versus four-wheel-drive availability can vary by year and trim.
- Verify towing details for that exact configuration. Towing capacity and equipment depend on the vehicle’s configuration and market. Use the matching model-year Ford documentation rather than treating a general model claim as universal. Ford’s 2025 announcement discusses towing and trailer-assistance technology. Ford, 2024
Finding repair information by year
Choose a repair reference only if its stated coverage includes the vehicle’s model year and configuration. A surfaced Haynes listing covers Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models from 1997–2017; it does not cover the 2018–present generations. Check the active edition and exact coverage before relying on it. Haynes Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator manual listing

Ford’s published generation history identifies major redesigns and selected milestones, but it does not provide a complete year-by-year record of trims, engines, safety features or equipment. Exact specifications should therefore be checked against documentation for the particular model year and market.
