Ford executives reportedly discussed ending the F-150 Lightning in November 2025. The report was not a Ford announcement. On December 15, Ford confirmed that production of the current-generation Lightning had concluded, while also announcing plans for a next-generation Lightning with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain. That is a change from the battery-electric truck Ford had been building—not an announcement that the Lightning name or all successor plans were abandoned.
What Ford said about ending the Lightning
On November 6, 2025, TechCrunch reported, citing The Wall Street Journal, that Ford executives were discussing whether to end the F-150 Lightning. The report said the discussion followed an October production pause as Ford prioritized gas and hybrid F-150s during disruptions after a fire at aluminum supplier Novelis’ Oswego, New York, factory. At that point, this was reporting about internal discussions, not a public decision by Ford.

Ford made its public announcement on December 15, 2025: production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning had concluded. The company said workers were being redeployed to the Dearborn Truck Plant to support an additional crew producing gas and hybrid F-150s in connection with the Novelis fires.
What the production change means for the next Lightning
Ford said the next-generation F-150 Lightning would use an extended-range electric vehicle architecture and be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. An EREV is distinct from the current Lightning’s battery-electric configuration: Ford described the planned successor as retaining electric power delivery while adding an estimated range of more than 700 miles.

Why Ford said it was changing its EV plans
Ford said it would stop producing select larger electric vehicles where it believed the business case had eroded, citing lower-than-expected demand, high costs, and regulatory changes. Those are Ford’s stated reasons, not independent findings established by the announcement.

The company framed the move as a broader shift toward customer choice among gas vehicles, hybrids, extended-range EVs, and smaller, more affordable EVs. CEO Jim Farley described it as “a customer-driven shift to create a stronger, more resilient and more profitable Ford,” and said Ford was redeploying capital to Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, and battery energy storage.

What Ford has—and has not—said about the successor
Ford chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field called the original Lightning “a groundbreaking product that demonstrated an electric pickup can still be a great F-Series.” On the planned successor, he said it “keeps everything customers love – 100% electric power delivery, sub-5-second acceleration – and adds an estimated 700+ mile range and tows like a locomotive.” These are Ford’s descriptions of the planned vehicle, not independent performance or towing results.

Ford’s December 2025 release also projected that hybrids, extended-range EVs, and fully electric vehicles together would account for about 50% of its global volume by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. That projection is a company forecast, not a reported outcome. Ford also announced about $19.5 billion in special items, with the majority expected to be recorded in the fourth quarter and cash effects extending into 2026 and 2027.

Before Ford’s December 15 roadmap announcement, Reuters, in a report carried by TradingView, described a delay of a next-generation full-size electric pickup from 2027 to 2028. That earlier report helps explain the timeline, but it predates Ford’s EREV announcement. It should not be treated as confirmation that the successor has launched, or that the earlier date remains the schedule for the announced EREV.
