Ford Cut Back Its EV Plans After Claiming the No. 2 U.S. EV Brand Spot

Ford’s 2024 No. 2 U.S. EV-brand claim is historical. Its later strategy cuts selected larger EVs but retains an affordable electric pickup and expands hybrids and extended-range vehicles.

Ford’s “No. 2 U.S. electric vehicle brand” description was a company claim from 2024, not a verified ranking for 2026. Since then, Ford has canceled or reshaped some larger EV programs while retaining plans for a lower-cost electric pickup and expanding its focus on hybrids, extended-range EVs, commercial vehicles and battery storage. The change is a narrower electrification strategy—not an exit from EVs.

Why is Ford cutting EV plans?

Ford says the economics of some larger electric vehicles no longer work as planned. In its December 15, 2025 strategy announcement, the company cited lower-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes as reasons to stop pursuing selected larger EV programs. It said the decisions would result in about $19.5 billion in special items and approximately $5.5 billion in cash effects, with payments extending into 2026 and 2027. Ford’s December 2025 announcement

The shift follows a more expansive 2024 roadmap. At that time, Ford said it was adapting to customers it viewed as more cost-conscious than early EV adopters, and pointed to pricing pressure, compliance requirements, fuel and maintenance savings, and the convenience of charging at home. Those are Ford’s explanations of the market—not independent measurements of every buyer’s priorities. Ford’s April 2024 announcement Associated Press reporting

In December 2025, CEO Jim Farley said Ford was redeploying capital toward “higher-return growth opportunities,” including Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, and battery energy storage. That frames the reset as a business-allocation decision: Ford is concentrating its EV investment while placing more emphasis on vehicle categories and businesses it expects to earn stronger returns.

What changed in Ford’s EV plans?

Program Earlier plan or product What Ford said changed
Affordable electric pickup Ford’s 2025 plan retained a fully electric midsize pickup on its Universal EV Platform. Louisville was being retooled for the pickup, with production planned to begin in 2027. This remains a company plan, not a launched vehicle. Ford’s 2025 announcement Ford’s July 2026 sales update
F-150 Lightning The current-generation truck was a battery-electric pickup. Ford said production of the current Lightning had concluded and described a next-generation Lightning using an extended-range electric architecture. Range and performance figures attached to that future vehicle are Ford projections, not independently verified results. Ford’s December 2025 announcement
Commercial van Ford had planned a North American electric commercial van for 2026. Ford said it would replace that planned EV with a gas- and hybrid-powered commercial van. Ford’s 2024 roadmap Ford’s 2025 announcement
Tennessee plant The Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center was part of Ford’s EV manufacturing plans. Ford renamed it the Tennessee Truck Plant and planned to make affordable gas-powered trucks there beginning in 2029. Ford’s December 2025 announcement
Battery energy storage Ford’s vehicle strategy centered on producing and selling vehicles. The company also announced investment in stationary battery storage, with a target of 20 GWh of annual capacity by late 2027. This is a company target, not capacity already operating. Ford’s 2026 energy-storage update

Is Ford still making electric vehicles?

Yes. Ford’s plans still include battery-electric vehicles, most notably the affordable midsize pickup planned for Louisville in 2027. The company’s December 2025 plan also concentrated North American pure-EV development on its Universal EV Platform. Its other electrification work includes hybrids and extended-range EVs, which use a different powertrain approach from a battery-only EV.

Ford has not described the next-generation Lightning as a conventional battery-only successor: it says the truck will use extended-range electric architecture. The company has also shifted some planned products from fully electric to gas or hybrid power. The result is a mix of technologies rather than a single all-electric product strategy.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

What happened to the all-electric F-150 Lightning?

Ford said production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning had concluded. Its stated next step is a next-generation Lightning built around extended-range electric architecture. Ford has presented range and performance figures for that future model as estimates; they should not be treated as independent test results or as specifications confirmed by a delivered production vehicle.

Is Ford still the second-largest EV brand?

Ford said in April 2024 that its U.S. EV sales had risen 86% year over year in the first quarter and that it had been the No. 2 U.S. EV brand for two years. The ranking is a historical Ford claim. The figures do not establish Ford’s position in 2026, and Ford’s later overall vehicle sales releases are not comparable to an EV-only brand ranking.

Ford’s July 2026 update reported 1,006,515 total vehicle sales in the first half of the year and estimated a 12.3% retail market share for June. It also reported 357,801 first-half F-Series sales and a record 46,507 Maverick Hybrid sales. These figures help describe Ford’s broader business and its hybrid emphasis, but they cannot answer how Ford ranked against other EV brands. Ford’s July 2026 sales release

What do Ford’s 2026 results say about the reset?

Ford said its Model e segment narrowed its EBIT loss for a third consecutive quarter year over year in its second-quarter 2026 commentary. The same commentary said second-quarter results included special charges associated with the BlueOval SK joint-venture disposition and previously announced EV program cancellations. That is a company-reported segment trend; it does not mean Model e was profitable or prove that the revised strategy has succeeded. Ford’s Q2 2026 commentary

The storage business is another part of Ford’s effort to repurpose battery capacity beyond vehicles. Ford described roughly $2 billion of planned investment over two years and expected initial capacity within 18 months; its later update outlined an agreement with EDF Power Solutions and a target of 20 GWh of annual capacity by late 2027. These are plans and targets, not proof that the projected capacity is already in service. Ford’s energy-storage update

How to read Ford’s strategy shift

  • Some programs were cut or changed: Ford stepped away from selected larger EVs and changed plans for the commercial van, current Lightning production, and Tennessee facility.
  • EV development continues, but with a narrower focus: Ford retained an affordable electric midsize pickup and a dedicated platform for North American pure-EV development.
  • More of the plan depends on mixed powertrains: Hybrids and extended-range EVs now sit alongside battery-only vehicles in Ford’s stated approach.
  • The financial and market signals need careful interpretation: Ford’s charges, segment loss trend, overall sales and historical EV ranking describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
