Stacked uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM) coverage in Florida protects people against qualifying injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver; it is not coverage to repair your own luxury car. The useful reason to “rethink” it is to check whether your UM limits, vehicle-damage coverage, and premium match the protection you actually want—not to assume that stacked coverage is automatically wasteful or that luxury cars receive special treatment.
What does stacked uninsured motorist coverage mean in Florida?
Florida’s Department of Financial Services (DFS) says UM coverage is stacked unless the insured rejects stacking in writing. A non-stacked election requires an Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Rejection form. Check the form on file and the current policy with your insurer; do not rely on a general description to determine your own coverage. See the Florida DFS auto insurance overview and DFS Automobile Insurance Toolkit.
Stacking can add limits for multiple vehicles. In DFS’s example, three vehicles each carry UM limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident:
| Option | Example available limits | How DFS describes the example |
|---|---|---|
| Stacked | $150,000 per person / $300,000 per accident | The limits for three vehicles are added together. |
| Non-stacked | $50,000 per person / $100,000 per accident | DFS says these remain the maximum regardless of the number of vehicles owned. |
These are regulator examples, not recommended limits or a guarantee of what any particular claim will pay. The DFS toolkit says stacked coverage can increase with vehicles owned even when they are insured on different policies. The policy’s wording and facts still matter.

Does UM pay to fix your car?
UM is bodily-injury protection, not collision coverage for damage to your own vehicle. The Florida Bar explains that UM may cover qualifying injury losses—such as medical expenses and lost wages beyond Personal Injury Protection (PIP)—when an uninsured or underinsured driver is at fault. It also discusses hit-and-run and phantom-vehicle situations. Coverage depends on the policy and the circumstances.
Collision coverage addresses repairs to your insured car after a collision, regardless of fault, while comprehensive coverage addresses other covered causes such as theft, fire, flood, vandalism, or animal impacts. For a high-value car, review its physical-damage limits, deductibles, and valuation and repair terms separately from your UM decision. The Florida Bar’s auto insurance pamphlet, updated May 2025, explains these coverage distinctions; it does not set a recommended amount for a luxury vehicle.

Florida Statutes § 324.022 addresses financial responsibility for property damage to others, including a $10,000 amount for covered vehicles or an approved alternative method or combined amount. That is not a UM limit, a promise that every driver carries a policy with that precise limit, or a measure of what your own car’s repairs will cost. See the 2026 Florida Statutes, § 324.022.
Do your UM limits add together if you own several cars?
They may, if your policy provides stacked coverage and its terms apply to the loss. Florida Statutes § 627.727 governs UM coverage and permits insurers to offer non-stacked UM language. The statute includes rules about limits involving multiple vehicles and addresses certain situations when an insured occupies a vehicle not owned by the insured or a resident family member. It is not safe to reduce those provisions to a universal rule for every household, policy, or borrowed-car situation. Read the declarations, UM selection or rejection form, endorsements, and policy definitions alongside the current text of § 627.727.

If you are injured in a car you own that has no UM
The DFS toolkit states: “Another important coverage difference between the stacked and non-stacked form is how the policy will respond if you are injured by an uninsured/underinsured motorist in a vehicle you own, but do not have insured.” It continues: “In that case, only the stacked form would respond.” Treat this as the toolkit’s explanation, not a guarantee about a specific claim. Confirm how your actual policy, forms, and circumstances apply.

There is no universal winner supported by the available consumer materials. Stacking can materially increase the limits available in DFS’s multi-vehicle example, while non-stacked coverage keeps the example’s limit at one vehicle’s 50/100 amount. Whether the difference is worth the price depends on your chosen limits, household vehicles, policy terms, and premium—not on the car’s luxury status alone. DFS advises consumers to ask their insurer about the policy provisions and the price difference.
