The Ferrari Enzo was both a tribute to the company’s founder and a road-going showcase for technology drawn from Formula 1. Presented in Paris in October 2002, it arrived during Ferrari’s early-2000s F1 dominance, with racing-department input and a limited production run. Its carbon-fibre construction, integrated electronic controls, F1-style transmission and naturally aspirated V12 made the car a bridge between Ferrari’s competition programme and its road cars.
Why Ferrari made the Enzo
The car’s name honoured Enzo Ferrari, whose racing history shaped the company. He founded Scuderia Ferrari in Modena in 1929 to race Alfa Romeo cars; in 1939, he established his own company, initially called Auto Avio Costruzioni. Ferrari later named its flagship road car for its founder. Ferrari’s account of Enzo Ferrari’s history traces those early milestones.
Ferrari presented the Enzo at the Paris Motor Show in October 2002. The timing linked the founder tribute to the company’s success in Formula 1: Ferrari’s history account says the racing department contributed substantial technical input. The aim was not simply to give a road car F1-inspired styling, but to carry competition-derived engineering into a limited-production flagship.
How Formula 1 ideas shaped the Enzo
Ferrari credits Pininfarina with the design, but the F1 connection ran deeper than the car’s appearance. Ferrari describes carbon-fibre construction, electronic vehicle-dynamic controls integrated with a human-machine interface, push-rod suspension at both ends, and carbon-ceramic brakes derived from F1. Together, these choices made the Enzo’s competition link a matter of structure, control and braking as well as styling. Ferrari’s Enzo model page presents the car as a link between racing know-how and road use.

Engine, transmission and performance
Ferrari’s official specifications describe a rear-longitudinal, 65-degree V12 with 5,998.80 cc displacement. The naturally aspirated engine produces a maximum 485 kW, or 660 CV, at 7,800 rpm and 657 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. Ferrari lists a six-speed electrohydraulic F1 transmission and a maximum speed above 350 km/h; its stated 0–100 km/h time is 3.65 seconds. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
The chassis is a carbon-fibre and aluminium-honeycomb monocoque. That construction, combined with electronic controls and the F1-derived transmission, put the Enzo’s road-car systems within a broader effort to transfer Ferrari’s racing expertise to a production car. Ferrari’s history page also gives the engine output as 660 horsepower at 7,800 rpm; its model page specifies 660 CV. Those labels are Ferrari’s stated units and are not interchangeable unit conventions.

How many Ferrari Enzos were made?
Ferrari’s history page says 399 Enzos were built in the original run. Its corporate prospectus gives the production period as 2002 to 2004. Ferrari then built a separate 400th example in 2005 as a gift for Pope John Paul II. That car was auctioned for charity, with Ferrari reporting $1.1 million in proceeds donated to the Vatican for humanitarian relief. The 399 original-production cars and the later charity example are distinct parts of the total story. Ferrari N.V.’s 2016 prospectus places the production period in the company’s limited-production history.

Ferrari positions the Enzo in a line of limited-production supercars that includes the GTO, F40, F50 and LaFerrari. In that sequence, it followed the F50 and preceded LaFerrari. The Enzo also inspired the FXX, the first car in Ferrari’s XX Programme: a strictly limited, track-only line of high-tech laboratory cars. The FXX carried the Enzo’s technical ambition onto the circuit rather than serving as another road model.

Ferrari says later road cars carried forward elements associated with the Enzo, including a light, compact V12, carbon brakes, a human-machine interface and aerodynamic solutions. That legacy is less about one feature being copied unchanged than about the Enzo helping establish a way to bring racing-derived systems and design priorities into Ferrari’s road-car flagships.
