Ferrari 296 GTB Maintenance Costs and Ownership Considerations

Ferrari describes seven years of scheduled maintenance for the 296 GTB, but public model-specific repair prices and failure rates are not established. Verify coverage, quotes and condition by VIN.

Routine scheduled maintenance for the Ferrari 296 GTB is described by Ferrari as included for the first seven years, but that does not make ownership maintenance-free. Tires, brakes, wear items, damage, diagnostics and unscheduled repairs are separate budget considerations, and the available sources do not establish a dependable annual dollar figure for maintaining a 296 GTB. For a used car, verify the remaining service-program term and the vehicle’s individual history before treating the advertised coverage as a saving.

The practical question is not simply “What does a 296 cost to service?” It is which costs are covered on this particular car, which are not, and what written estimates and protection options are available in the owner’s country. Ferrari’s program descriptions provide useful coverage information; they do not amount to a complete ownership-cost forecast.

What Ferrari’s seven-year maintenance program covers

Ferrari’s 296 GTB product information describes a Genuine Maintenance program covering regular scheduled maintenance for the first seven years. The service interval is described as 20,000 km or once a year, with no mileage restrictions. Ferrari also says the work uses original spare parts and is carried out by Ferrari-trained personnel through its official dealer network. The program is described as available to pre-owned owners, but a buyer should confirm the terms and remaining eligibility for the specific vehicle and market.

Ferrari’s 2025 annual report says its 7 Year Maintenance Program has been free of charge on new cars since 2011. That supports the expectation that qualifying routine service is included; it does not mean all work on the car is free. The report characterizes the program as scheduled maintenance intended to keep cars in line with Ferrari performance and safety requirements. It does not establish that consumables, damage, unscheduled repairs or every hybrid-system service are included.

For a car currently within the program period, confirm in writing what its status is and what the next scheduled visit includes. Do not rely only on a seller’s description such as “free servicing” or “full Ferrari service history”: those phrases do not answer whether coverage is active, what it pays for, or what work is due.

How to interpret the service interval

The published interval is 20,000 km or once a year. The product information also says the program has no mileage restrictions. These are related but different points: the interval tells an owner when regular service is described as due, while the no-mileage-restriction wording describes the program’s coverage. Confirm the exact schedule in the Ferrari documentation for the car rather than assuming the interval overrides all local program conditions.

Kelley Blue Book’s secondary maintenance guidance describes annual checkups and gives examples such as oil and filter changes, fluid checks and inspections. Those examples can help a buyer understand the kind of work routine service may involve, but Ferrari documentation for the vehicle and market should control the actual schedule and covered work.

Which ownership costs remain outside scheduled service

A scheduled-maintenance program is only one part of an ownership budget. Separate the likely expense categories before comparing cars or asking for estimates. The sources reviewed do not provide a complete 296 GTB price list, so the table distinguishes established program information from costs that need a vehicle- and location-specific quote.

Cost category What is established What to verify
Routine scheduled maintenance Ferrari describes seven years of Genuine Maintenance, at 20,000 km or once a year, with no mileage restrictions. Whether the individual car remains eligible, its next due service, and the work included under local terms.
Wear items and consumables They are not established as included by the scheduled-service descriptions. Condition, replacement timing and an itemized estimate for the specific car.
Unscheduled repairs and damage No model-specific repair prices are established. Inspection findings, diagnostic needs, repair scope and written pricing.
Optional warranty or hybrid coverage Ferrari’s 2025 annual report describes options for the 296 family but gives no public prices in the material reviewed. Current availability, eligibility, exclusions, term and VIN-specific price in the relevant country.
Insurance and other ownership costs No 296 GTB-specific figures are established in the sources reviewed. Quotes and terms based on the owner, location, usage and vehicle.

This separation matters when a car is described as being “under maintenance coverage.” That claim does not by itself establish that a worn tire, brake component, fault diagnosis or repair following damage will be paid for. Ask the dealer to distinguish covered scheduled work from work that would be billed separately, and request a written estimate for anything already due or recommended.

Why there is no dependable annual maintenance figure

The available evidence supports a coverage description, not a reliable annual budget in dollars. Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 Ferrari 296 GTB model-page listing reports no maintenance pricing data. Its broader discussion of post-program charges and extended coverage is not a model-specific repair-price schedule. Generic dealer anecdotes are not a substitute for prices tied to the car’s location, condition and required work.

That means a single annual figure would imply more precision than the evidence supports. A year with only qualifying scheduled service may look very different from one involving tires, brakes, diagnostics or an unexpected repair. The owner’s market, the car’s history and configuration, and whether a particular item is covered all affect the answer. No robust public 296 GTB dataset establishes service prices by region, repair bills, insurance costs, depreciation or common-failure incidence.

How to build a usable budget

  1. Start with the car, not an average. Collect its VIN, first-delivery date, mileage, service records and configuration. These establish which coverage and wear questions apply.
  2. Confirm scheduled coverage. Ask an authorized Ferrari dealer to verify the program status against the VIN, remaining term, next service due and covered work. Request confirmation in writing.
  3. Get separate estimates for uncovered work. Ask for itemized estimates for upcoming scheduled work not covered by the program, wear items, diagnostic work and repairs. If considering an independent specialist, ask for a comparable scope rather than comparing a partial estimate with a full dealer quote.
  4. Price optional protection separately. Request the written terms and price of any warranty extension or hybrid coverage being offered. Do not count an option as part of the car’s protection until eligibility, exclusions and the effective dates are clear.
  5. Use quotes as scenarios, not guarantees. Keep routine service, known near-term work and uncertain repairs in separate budget lines. An inspection estimate identifies present findings; it cannot establish that no future repair will occur.

Warranty extension and hybrid-system coverage

Maintenance and warranty protection are different products. Ferrari’s 2022 aftersales overview distinguishes warranty extensions from the 7-Year Genuine Maintenance program; because it is older, it is useful for understanding that distinction, not as definitive evidence of today’s price or eligibility.

Ferrari’s 2025 annual report describes warranty-extension options for the 296 family. It says Warranty Extension Hybrid can be purchased after the fourth year up to the eighth year and includes high-voltage battery replacement after the eighth year. The report does not provide prices, and it does not establish that every car or market has identical eligibility or terms. Treat this as a product description to verify, not a promise that a particular used 296 GTB qualifies or that a battery replacement is automatically covered in every circumstance.

Before buying, ask an authorized dealer for the current written offer tied to the VIN. Check the earliest and latest purchase dates, when protection begins and ends, what components and failure circumstances are covered, and any exclusions or conditions. Ask separately whether a warranty option covers the concern you are trying to protect against; a maintenance plan should not be assumed to do so.

What to check when buying a used 296 GTB

The strongest way to assess a used car is to verify its own records and condition. The available sources do not establish reliable common-failure rates for the 296 GTB, so broad claims that a particular component is a routine failure should not replace a VIN-specific inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Establish the timeline. Ask for the first-delivery date and use it to determine the likely remaining portion of the seven-year maintenance period. Have Ferrari confirm the actual status rather than relying on the model year or seller’s estimate.
  2. Authenticate the service history. Request records and ask Ferrari to verify the service-program status and recorded work for the VIN. Resolve gaps, overdue visits or conflicting descriptions before agreeing a price.
  3. Commission a specialist inspection. Have a Ferrari-qualified professional inspect the actual vehicle and document observed condition, diagnostic findings and work that is due or recommended. The inspection should inform a repair estimate, not be represented as proof that the car will have no future problems.
  4. Get prices for identified work. Ask for itemized written estimates from an authorized dealer and, where appropriate, a qualified independent specialist. Confirm that each estimate covers the same work and parts so the comparison is meaningful.
  5. Confirm optional coverage before assigning it value. Obtain current terms and price for any warranty or hybrid product offered, and verify that the car is eligible. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a substitute for written confirmation.
  6. Inspect configuration-specific wear items. Identify the actual wheel and tire specification, condition and replacement needs. Do not budget from a generic fitment assumption.
  7. Check practical service access. Identify a capable service center within a reasonable distance and confirm it can support the car and any relevant program. The existence of a global network does not guarantee convenient local access.

Reading claims about “common problems”

There is no dependable failure-rate statistic established here for the 296 GTB, and the evidence does not support a definitive list of model-wide common failures. That is not proof that failures never happen; it is a limit on what can responsibly be claimed from the available material. For an individual purchase, prioritize documented symptoms, diagnostic results, service history and an independent inspection over unsourced reliability lists or anecdotes.

Tires, configuration and service access

Ferrari’s product information identifies Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires as an option associated with the Assetto Fiorano package. This does not make them the universal fitment for every 296 GTB. The source does not provide tire dimensions, so check the actual wheel and tire specification on the car and confirm an approved replacement with Ferrari or a qualified tire professional before ordering. Condition and specification should be assessed on the individual vehicle, not inferred from the badge or package description alone.

Ferrari stated that it operated 249 aftersales facilities worldwide at December 31, 2025, and describes dealer training and service-engineer support. That figure gives network context, not a guarantee that a suitable center is near a particular owner or that local service will cost a particular amount. Verify the nearest capable facility and its ability to handle the vehicle before relying on the network for a purchase or ownership plan.

A practical way to compare two 296 GTBs

When two cars appear similar, compare their confirmed ownership position rather than assuming the newer or lower-mileage car is automatically cheaper to maintain. A useful comparison records the facts that change the near-term service and protection picture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Age and remaining program term: record the first-delivery date and the dealer-confirmed remaining Genuine Maintenance term for each car.
  • History and due work: compare verified service records, next scheduled service and inspection findings.
  • Wear-item condition: note tire specification and condition, plus any other uncovered work identified by the inspection.
  • Protection options: compare only written warranty or hybrid coverage offers confirmed as available to each VIN; note the price, duration and exclusions.
  • Service options: compare itemized dealer and qualified independent estimates for the same uncovered work, alongside the practical availability of capable centers.

This approach will not forecast every future bill, but it makes differences between the actual cars visible. A vehicle with active scheduled service coverage can still require significant uncovered work; conversely, an absence of published repair averages is not a reason to assume a particular car is expensive or problem-prone. Let the records, written coverage confirmation and inspection findings drive the comparison.
