Those two answers are not contradictory. The 300+ record involved a near-production derivative, whereas the Chiron Super Sport’s 440-km/h figure describes a customer-production vehicle. The Mistral, Veyron, Bolide and forthcoming Tourbillon add further distinctions between record cars, standard models, track-only cars and announced specifications.

How fast is the Chiron Super Sport 300+?
The Chiron Super Sport 300+ reached 490.484 km/h (304.773 mph) on August 2, 2019, making it the Bugatti most closely associated with breaking the 300-mph barrier. The figure belongs to a speed run by a near-production derivative of the Chiron, rather than to a standard customer car.
According to Bugatti’s September 2019 account of the run, the car broke the 300-mph threshold at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track. Bugatti’s earlier announcement described the road-focused record program and the special customer edition separately.

“After the incredible speed record of more than 300 miles per hour, which we were the first series manufacturer to achieve, we’re now offering our customers the Super Sport 300+ – a very special edition model and the fastest Bugatti ever.” — Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti, Bugatti Newsroom, 2019
Bugatti produced 30 customer Chiron Super Sport 300+ editions during the 2019–2022 production run. Those cars were based on the record vehicle’s design, but the 490.484-km/h result should remain labelled as the near-production derivative’s recorded run.
Is the Chiron Super Sport faster than the Veyron Super Sport?
The Chiron Super Sport has the higher stated customer-car top speed, at 440 km/h, while the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport recorded an official 431.072-km/h average maximum speed in 2010. The Chiron therefore exceeds the Veyron’s official benchmark by 8.928 km/h on the quoted figures.
| Model | Speed figure | What the figure represents | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veyron 16.4 Super Sport | 431.072 km/h | Official average maximum speed in the record run | 2010 |
| Chiron Super Sport | 440 km/h | Electronically limited stated top speed for the production vehicle | 2021 |
| Chiron Super Sport 300+ | 490.484 km/h / 304.773 mph | Recorded speed of a near-production derivative | 2019 |
Bugatti’s 2010 Veyron Super Sport release identifies 431.072 km/h as the average maximum speed from the official record attempt. For the later model, Bugatti states that the Chiron Super Sport’s electronically limited 440-km/h top speed makes it the fastest production vehicle in its range.

“With an electronically limited top speed of 440 km/h, the Chiron Super Sport is the fastest Bugatti production vehicle and the fastest street homologated automobile in the world.” — Bugatti Newsroom, 2021
How fast is the Bugatti Mistral?
The standard W16 Mistral is specified to reach 420 km/h, while the one-off W16 Mistral World Record Car reached 453.91 km/h. The 453.91-km/h result is an open-top record for the special record car, not the normal performance specification of every Mistral.
Bugatti and SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH confirmed the W16 Mistral World Record Car’s 453.91-km/h run on November 9, 2024. Bugatti explicitly identifies the record vehicle as a one-off. By contrast, the standard Mistral was planned as a 99-car production roadster, with production completed in 2026 according to the researched information.
The standard car’s 420-km/h target was part of the engineering brief for combining roadster performance with a refined open cabin. Bugatti’s record announcement separates the World Record Car from the production Mistral, while the original Mistral announcement gives the standard roadster’s 420-km/h specification.
“One of the primary challenges was to meet the goal of creating a roadster that has a top speed of 420km/h and mixing this performance-defining quality with an experience in the cabin that is luxurious, refined and assured.” — Emilio Scervo, Bugatti Rimac Chief Technical Officer, Bugatti Newsroom, 2024
Which other Bugattis belong in a fastest-cars list?
Several limited Bugattis have impressive top-speed figures, but their purposes differ. The Divo and Centodieci are road-going limited-production derivatives rated at 380 km/h, while the Chiron Pur Sport is limited to 350 km/h because its setup prioritises grip, downforce and cornering over maximum straight-line speed.
| Model | Top speed | Production status | Why it is not the overall leader |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bolide | 380 km/h in low-downforce configuration | 40-unit track-only production model | Not a normal road car; earlier concept speed above 500 km/h was simulated, not a verified production run |
| Divo | 380 km/h | 40 road-going cars | Cornering-focused derivative |
| Centodieci | 380 km/h | 10 cars | Limited-production coachbuilt derivative |
| Chiron Pur Sport | 350 km/h | Limited production | Handling-focused Chiron variant with a lower regulated limit |
Is the Bugatti Bolide faster than the Chiron?
The production Bolide is not faster than the Chiron Super Sport on the verified figures used here: Bugatti gives the track-only Bolide 380 km/h in its low-downforce configuration, compared with 440 km/h for the road-going Chiron Super Sport.

The Bolide should not be judged as an ordinary road-legal Bugatti. Bugatti developed the Bolide as a track-only production model, with a 40-car run and a customer experience centred on circuit driving. The earlier experimental concept was described with a simulated speed of well over 500 km/h, but simulation is not the same as a verified production-car speed run.
Bugatti’s production-version material gives the 380-km/h low-downforce figure and emphasises the car’s track performance. A smaller-scale way to explore the design is LEGO Technic Bugatti Bolide 42151; the building set should not be confused with evidence of the full-size Bolide’s speed.
“The customers’ safety is always our top priority.” — Stephan Winkelmann, discussing the track-focused customer experience for the Bugatti Bolide, Bugatti Newsroom, 2021
What about the Bugatti Tourbillon’s 445-km/h top speed?
The Bugatti Tourbillon has an announced top speed of 445 km/h, which is higher than the Chiron Super Sport’s 440 km/h specification. The Tourbillon should nevertheless remain in an announced or forthcoming section rather than an unqualified ranking of Bugattis already produced.
At the latest official 2026 update covered by the research, Bugatti described production as forthcoming and customer deliveries as beginning in 2026. The researched material did not confirm completed customer production, so the 445-km/h figure is best labelled a claimed or announced specification until a later official source establishes otherwise.
The Tourbillon’s status illustrates why a fastest-Bugatti list needs separate categories. A future production car can have a higher target than a completed model, but a target does not retroactively make it the fastest Bugatti ever produced.

A reliable ranking separates four different kinds of evidence: verified speed-run results, manufacturer-stated electronically limited top speeds, one-off record cars, and simulated or announced figures.
Rank #4
- Opening parts and rolling wheels
- Easy assembly, pre-painted metal body
- When finished the vehicles are fully functional
- Rolling diecast replica
- Skill level: intermediate
- Identify the vehicle that actually made the run. The Chiron Super Sport 300+ record vehicle and the W16 Mistral World Record Car are not interchangeable with their customer-production counterparts.
- Label the production status. “Customer-production model,” “30-unit special edition,” “one-off record car,” “track-only,” and “forthcoming” describe materially different things.
- Separate road cars from track cars. The Bolide’s 380-km/h track specification should not be used to claim that it is a faster road car than the Chiron.
- Distinguish a speed run from a specification. The Veyron’s 431.072 km/h is an official average maximum speed; the Chiron Super Sport’s 440 km/h is an electronically limited stated top speed.
- Do not promote simulations to records. The Bolide concept’s “well over 500 km/h” figure was simulated and is not a verified production-car result.
Final ranking by the clearest interpretation
For the question “Which Bugatti has broken the 300 mph barrier?”, the answer is the Chiron Super Sport 300+, at 304.773 mph. For the question “What is the fastest completed customer-production Bugatti?”, the answer is the Chiron Super Sport, at 440 km/h. For the question “What is the fastest open-top Bugatti?”, the answer depends on whether the question means any record car or the standard roadster: the one-off Mistral World Record Car reached 453.91 km/h, while the standard Mistral is specified at 420 km/h.
