A Sprint winner earns 8 points, with the top eight scoring. Shortened races use reduced distance-based tables, and fastest lap no longer earns a championship point.
How does the F1 points system work?
Drivers earn points from Grand Prix and Sprint results, and those same event points also count toward the Constructors’ Championship. The figures below follow Article A2.2 of the FIA’s 2026 General Regulatory Provisions, Section A, Issue 03, dated June 25, 2026. The FIA regulation index listed that as the latest Section A document on October 4, 2026.
Full-distance Grand Prix points
If the leader completes at least 75% of the scheduled Grand Prix distance, the top ten finishers score:
| Finish | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 25 |
| 2nd | 18 |
| 3rd | 15 |
| 4th | 12 |
| 5th | 10 |
| 6th | 8 |
| 7th | 6 |
| 8th | 4 |
| 9th | 2 |
| 10th | 1 |
Positions outside the top ten earn no points under this Grand Prix table.

Do F1 Sprint races give championship points?
Yes. Under the FIA’s 2026 rules, a Sprint adds points to both championships, with the top eight scoring:
| Finish | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 8 |
| 2nd | 7 |
| 3rd | 6 |
| 4th | 5 |
| 5th | 4 |
| 6th | 3 |
| 7th | 2 |
| 8th | 1 |
The Sprint award applies only if the leader completes at least 50% of the scheduled Sprint distance and the event meets the minimum-lap condition: at least two complete, consecutive laps without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure.

What happens to F1 points if a race is stopped early?
A Grand Prix stopped before the leader completes 75% of scheduled distance does not automatically use the normal full-distance table. The FIA’s 2026 rules scale awards according to the leader’s completed distance. Points require at least two complete, consecutive laps by the leader without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car procedure; if that condition is not met, no points are awarded.
For each distance band, the numbers below are the points awarded to the corresponding finishing positions, in order. The leader’s completed distance determines which table applies.

| Leader completes | Scoring positions and points, in finishing order |
|---|---|
| At least 2 laps but less than 25% | 1st–5th: 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 |
| 25% to less than 50% | 1st–9th: 13, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 |
| 50% to less than 75% | 1st–10th: 19, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 |
| 75% or more | 1st–10th: 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 |
These are distance-based awards, not a uniform “half-points” reduction: the exact amount depends on both the distance band and finishing position. A red flag or stoppage by itself does not establish which band applies; the leader’s completed distance and the minimum-lap requirement do.
How do points count toward the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships?
Drivers’ Championship
Each driver’s points from eligible Grands Prix and Sprints accumulate in that driver’s individual total. The driver with the highest total after the competitions that take place wins the Drivers’ Championship.

Constructors’ Championship
A team’s total combines points scored by both of its cars. That means both drivers’ results can contribute to the team’s position, even when neither wins an event.
What happens in a points tie?
The FIA first compares the number of race wins. If drivers or teams remain tied, it compares second places, then third places, continuing through the finishing positions. Qualifying results are the final fallback if race-result countback does not break the tie.

Does fastest lap still get a point in F1?
No. Fastest lap does not earn a championship bonus under the 2026 rules. The FIA announced the return of the fastest-lap point on March 11, 2019, saying that rule could make 21 additional championship points available across a season. Formula 1’s 2025 media kit says the point was removed for 2025, after concerns that a driver outside the top ten could pit late, set fastest lap and take the bonus from a rival without scoring a point themselves. The 2026 FIA rules do not restore the bonus.
How has the F1 points system changed?
The established sources cited here document selected recent milestones, not every change since the championship began. They show how the fastest-lap bonus returned and was later removed, and distinguish a proposal discussion from an adopted rule.
2019: fastest-lap point returned
On March 11, 2019, the FIA announced that a championship point for fastest race lap would return, following approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council and the necessary approval process involving the F1 Strategy Group and F1 Commission. The FIA said the change made 21 additional points available over the course of a season under that year’s rules.
2024: points proposals discussed, not adopted
In April 2024, the Formula 1 Commission discussed proposals to change championship points distribution and said more analysis was needed before a proposal could return to a later meeting. That statement records discussion, not an approved or implemented change.

Formula 1’s official 2025 media kit says the fastest-lap point was removed for that season. It described the rest of the system as unchanged: the top ten scored in a Grand Prix and the top eight in a Sprint. The 2026 FIA regulations retain those scoring positions and contain no fastest-lap bonus.
