EVgo’s Next-Generation Chargers: What 750 kW Really Means

EVgo’s 750 kW figure describes a planned system capability, not the rate every car will receive. Vehicle limits, battery conditions and power sharing shape charging speed.

EVgo’s announced 750 kW figure is the planned system’s peak capability—not a promise that an individual car will charge at 750 kW. The rate a driver receives depends chiefly on the vehicle’s charging limits and battery conditions, as well as how the station allocates power. EVgo expects to unveil the final design and begin deployment in 2027; its “around 10 minutes” estimate applies to the fastest-charging vehicles and is conditional.

What EVgo has announced

On September 29, 2026, EVgo said it had previewed a next-generation charging system capable of up to 750 kW. Design, development, and testing are underway at EVgo’s Innovation Lab in El Segundo, California, with co-development support from Delta Electronics. EVgo expects to unveil the final design and begin deployment in 2027. Those are company plans, not a final technical specification or independently verified operating results. EVgo’s announcement

The planned system includes NACS connectors at each station, more maneuverable cables, a touchless payment interface, and hardware and firmware changes intended to improve reliability and streamline charging. EVgo also says dispensers will dynamically share power, adjusting output in real time to the connected vehicles’ needs.

EVgo’s second-quarter 2026 results had earlier said that the equipment design was finalized and high-current charging had been demonstrated on multiple vehicle models. Those results did not report measured 750 kW output, how long a vehicle sustained peak power, efficiency, thermal limits, or results by model. The September announcement still described final-design unveiling and deployment as expected in 2027. EVgo’s Q2 2026 results

What 750 kW means for a driver

Kilowatts measure power: the rate at which energy is transferred at a given moment. A charger’s rating describes what its equipment may be capable of supplying; it does not determine what a connected car can accept. The vehicle’s charging system and battery, the battery’s state and temperature, charger operation, and any power sharing all affect the rate during a session.

EVgo’s current vehicle guide says most vehicles reach their maximum charge rate only briefly, then taper as the battery fills. Consequently, even a car with a high advertised peak does not necessarily charge at that rate throughout a session. EVgo’s charging guide

  • 750 kW is not a per-car guarantee. The announcement describes system capability; it does not establish that a passenger EV can accept that much.
  • It is not a session-long rate. A vehicle’s power draw changes with its charging curve and battery conditions.
  • It is not a simultaneous-output guarantee. EVgo has not published this system’s total site capacity, dispenser count, cabinet arrangement, or maximum output when several vehicles charge at once.
  • It does not remove connector compatibility requirements. The car’s inlet and charging compatibility still matter.

Will your EV charge at 750 kW?

Only if the vehicle can accept that much power under the conditions of that session. EVgo’s announcement and vehicle guide do not establish that any particular reader’s car can reach 750 kW. Check the specifications for the exact model year and trim, and treat a listed maximum as a peak rather than a rate guaranteed for the entire charge.

EVgo’s September 8, 2026 guide groups vehicles by maximum DC charging rate, spanning current, older, and discontinued models. It places the 2017–2023 Chevrolet Bolt in an “up to 59 kW” group; the Ford F-150 Lightning, Nissan Ariya, and Volkswagen ID.4 among examples in a 60–199 kW group; and the Audi e-tron GT, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, Kia EV6, Porsche Taycan, and some Lucid Air variants in a 200–350+ kW group. These are guide categories, not a substitute for checking the exact vehicle’s manufacturer specifications. EVgo’s vehicle charging-rate guide

How to compare charging-speed claims

A peak-kW figure alone is not enough to compare how quickly two cars or charging setups add energy. For a useful comparison, look at:

  1. The vehicle’s maximum DC acceptance rate and charging curve. The curve shows how power changes during a session, rather than just its brief peak.
  2. A defined state-of-charge interval. Charging from one battery level to another is more meaningful than an unspecified claim about minutes.
  3. Comparable battery conditions. Temperature and any battery-preconditioning settings can affect charging speed.
  4. Power sharing and site capacity. Find out whether output is shared and what the site can supply when multiple vehicles are connected.
  5. A stated outcome. Session time, energy delivered, or miles added—with assumptions disclosed—offers more context than an unqualified “fastest” label.
  6. Connector and vehicle compatibility. Confirm that the car can use the station’s connector and charging system.

What EVgo’s “around 10 minutes” estimate does—and doesn’t—say

EVgo says the fastest-charging vehicles in the U.S. market could charge in around 10 minutes. The company qualifies that expectation: actual charging time varies with the vehicle’s charging speed and settings, battery condition, ambient temperature, and starting state of charge. The announcement does not specify the start and end battery levels behind the estimate, so it should not be read as a general time to fully charge, or as a result that applies to every EV. What remains unspecified

The announcement does not provide the final charger’s voltage and current limits, total site power, number of dispensers per power cabinet, simultaneous stall output, or the vehicles that could approach 750 kW. It also does not publish independent field measurements for the system or the detailed charge window behind the time estimate. Until those specifications and results are available, the peak figure and timing should be treated as EVgo’s prospective claims, not verified performance.

For context only, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office described EVgo equipment supported by a 2024 loan guarantee as including dual-port 350 kW DC fast chargers with power sharing.
